ICONIC MASTERS UPDATE

MattN7498, 7 years ago

Haven't really had a chance to update recently, so finally get a chance to with the new Iconic Masters set. Ixalan brought some fun, new cards to try out as well as Iconic Masters bringing in some cool Dragon reprints.
Teferi's Protection > Rampant Growth - With the amount of basics decreasing as time goes on, this card is essentially dead and can't search for the less frequent colors in the deck. Teferi's is a huge blowout card that you can save when you trying to kill everyone and save all your dragons. Kokusho, the Evening Star > Thundermaw Hellkite - Thundermaw's ability was never relevant or important so it was just a 5/5 haste creature which wasn't worth. Kokusho makes it hard for opponents to board wipe at the risk of giving us lots of life back. Also combos well with Sneak Attack. Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund > Sunbird's Invocation - I know I praised this card before and still think it's very good but felt more like a win more card but was equally as hard to get stuff going, especially if they tried to kill it immediately. Just trying Karrthus to see if he does anything useful. Sphinx's Revelation > Painful Truths - Has better scaling the later the game goes on and gains a ton life. Doing this at the end of the person before yours will give you a full hand to go with which they don't expect. Ryusei, the Falling Star > Teneb, the Harvester - Teneb required too much setup and the ability wasn't usually a blowout and both creatures would usually die. Ryusei makes it hard for opponents to start killing our creatures in fear of losing theirs. Also can block to purposefully have him die. Yosei, the Morning Star > Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury - Didn't have enough tokens or dragons fast enough to make use of the ability so it would usually be a dead card. Yosei makes it very difficult to spend lots of mana to kill all of your stuff and make them skip their untap step which is really good for this deck. Hellkite Tyrant > Wasitora, Nekoru Queen - Seems better as a commander than a creature in this 99 to build around. Her ability isn't too relative most of the time. Hellkite I think is needed because stealing mana rocks helps cast Dragons and Ur-Dragon quicker and can hose artifacts decks. Monastery Siege > Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip - While I think this card is very good in green, I think it's a little ambitious for this deck. It doesn't produce a lot of creatures quickly so flipping is hard the mana you get off of it isn't super relevant. Adding more protection for single targeting the dragons and card draw is nice. Nissa, Steward of Elements > Nahiri, the Harbinger - Nahiri's abilities didn't feel right for the deck because I never liked discarding stuff without using it and the other ability was okay but not what I wanted. Nissa provides a lot of utility in setting up draws with Ur-Dragon, scaling with the game and can have 10 damage out of no where with enough mana. Watery Gravefoil > Forest - Mana pie chart shifted and working on getting every shock in the land base.

Sideboard update

Kardonis, 7 years ago

Traded out the authority of the consuls for timely reinforcements which will help us stay alive against fast decks like burn. Traded out the suspension fields for leyline of sanctity which will protect from combo as well as burn. Still kinda iffy on blasphemous act, but I feel it can have some really good match ups.

-1 Armageddon

+1 Survival of the Fittest

Adding Survival is a no-brainer. The only problem is figuring out what to cut. Cutting Armageddon brings the average cmc down a little more, but we're losing an axis to punish fast land ramp players. Path to Exile might be the smarter cut, but that's what we're testing for

Weygrum, 7 years ago

The +1/+1 counter synergies have been removed. They weren't working with the rest of the deck. Anafenza is staying, because she's a pet card.

damage maximization

gillstrong, 7 years ago

removed some token creators like talrund and a couple of rift bolts. instead, focusing on maximizing the effectiveness of cards like lightning bolt and searing blood using more satyr fire dancers

MAJOR Update

Seventy7INa45, 7 years ago

My previous build with Queen as commander worked really well in my playgroup...too well. No one is super competitive so me going infinite by turn 4-5 was usually no fun to play against. Instead, I have rebuilt the deck around Overlord and more of a tribal feel. I made my mana base less consistent by removing the full set of shocks and adding some basic lands instead. So far the results are that the deck is good enough to win with who I play against, but not so much that I win every game

2-2 Well..... Technically

Chasmolinker, 7 years ago

I finally got a chance to see what this deck can do and it was a really fun night.

First match was against Esper Mill.
I won game 1 with relative ease. He got stuck on 2 land and couldn't do much. Abrupt Decay was clutch in removing Mesmeric Orb (in both games) as soon as it hit the field. I sided out all of my LotVs and brought in 2 Nihil Spellbombs, Abrupt Decay, and Maelstrom Pulse
Game 2 he opened with Leyline of Sanctity so discard was not a factor. He Extirpated my Tarmogoyfs early on but fell victim to Dark Confidant and Goblin Rabblemaster.

Second match was rough against Rakdos Hollow One Shadow?? Still not quite sure.
I had to Muligan to 5 game one on 2 no landers. He played Burning Inquiry, which I idn't even know was a card. I pitched Goyf, Scooze and LotV on the discard end of Inquiry. And then he dropped 2 Hollow Ones. I was able to get some removal but I couldn't keep up with him and game one was a loss.
Game 2 I can't even remember what I boarded out. But I brought in 2 Nihil Spellbombs to fight Gurmag Angler and Flamewake Phoenix, Maelstrom Pulse and Grafdigger's Cage. We mulliganed to 6 and I started off with Thoughtseize... He had NO LANDS!! Street Wraith, Faithless Looting, Hollow One and some 3 drops. NO LAND!!! WTF?! I had to fetch/shock twice after that, played out Dark Confidant and sort of kept up with him. I got down to 3 life and he was at 9. I still had Bob in play and he had just played Hollow One and recursed the Flamewake Phoenix. I had 3 mana up an Kolaghan's Command in my hand. 3 life... I played K Command killing both his creatures and then immediated revealed Maelstrom Pulse off the top. I got greedy. and that was the game. That deck was really difficult probably because I had never seen anything like it. He had Death's Shadow, Hollow One, Gurmag Angler and all kinds of Jank.... Man there was so much Jank. But it worked, and it worked well.

Match 3 was against BW Goodstuff.
I had all the removal and LotV was a force to be reckoned with. Everything he played was killed or sacrificed quickly. Even Phyrexian Obliterator was no match for Liliana. I won 2-0 with relative ease

LAST ROUND!!
Last round I was feeling confident. I was going up against Abzan Company (Vizier Combo). I had some concerns but I felt confident that I had enough answers to get through. Games 1 and 2 were quick and painless. I won game 1 and he took game 2. Game 3 was INTENSE!! The board state was a near stand-off. Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet was able to gain me some much needed life back as well as 2 Zombies. Goblin Rabblemaster applied pressure and Grafdigger's Cage shut off Collected Company and Kitchen Finks. He assembled his combo and made infinite mana to exile both graveyards with Scavenging Ooze gaining 9 life in total. He was at 14 and I was at 1. Time in the round had been called and it was my turn as turn 4 began. I had to end it but with Dark Confidant, Goblin Rabblemaster, a 2/3 Tarmogoyf and 2 zombie tokens. I couldn't get through with lethal. I swung with everything leaving up 3 to cast a Goblin Rabblemaster second main phase. I had to survive the next turn and he chump blocked with everything but Devoted Druid. The store was closing, I had a headache, it was intense, the math was hard. He went down to 5 blocking what he could. He cast a Collected Company on my endstep and grabbed a Selfless Spirit. Turn 5 began, he swung with 2 in the air.... I had nothing. He had won and I finished 2-2.
He packed up his things took his store credit and went home. As I sat there de-sideboarding I felt defeated. It was a great match, but I came up short.

BUT WAIT!!! Grafdigger's Cage!!!! $%&@!!! $%&#!! It should have been a draw. I thought to myself, I had no chance at winning, I probably would have died to Bob anyway. But what if....
What if I didn't take as long side boarding?
What if I had played a minute quicker?
What if...... Urghh
Oh well. It had been a month or more since I had played the deck for real. At least someone got a prize. So yes, technically I finished 2-2. But I know it was really 2-1-1.

Oh the salt.... I had a blast. The deck performed as I had hoped. I missed a few interactions and a few combat tricks but it could have been worse.... I could have played against Tron.

Removed: Burgeoning - too swingy. most often it is more or less a dead draw, unless you happen to get it really early. even then, it depends on continually hitting land draws. Screeching Skaab - has a direct equivalent that is in my tribe from FRF (Sultai Skullkeeper) Taigam, Sidisi's Hand - Great card that fills the gaveyard well, and he is excellent removal on a stick--almost too good when opponents can't deal with him. Don't like the non-bo with my draw step interactions, though (Rites and Siege). Swamp x2 Added: Twincast - can copy sweet spells of opponents, can act as a counter to protect the Big X Spells by copying a counter, can alternatively double one of the Big X Spells. Much versatility, much greatness. Sultai Skullkeeper - a Naga Shaman instead of a Zombie. Plus, it has the Sultai watermark. Torrent Elemental - Maybe it is worse than Taigam in a vacuum (hell, even in context) but the fact he can be delved, and then come back when otherwise you have no resources, I think is very neat-o. Golgari Rot Farm and Simic Growth Chamber - Now have all three of the bounce lands. This is a minor nonbo with Cabal coffers but this trade is well worth the advantages of the bounce lands because Cabal is just so good anyways. These lands allow more consistent landfall triggers (they can loop infinitely by bouncing each other) and a slight card advantage, which may sometimes allow you to put something into the graveyard because of the bounce, e.g. a Dredge card. Also switched in some FRF lands, including a foil swamp (no.181)

Change Log 6

Driemer84, 7 years ago

-Claws of Gix +Nissa, Vastwood Seer Zuran Orb and Sylvan Safekeeper have proven to be enough land sac outlets since most lands in the deck can put themselves into the graveyard. So Claws of Gix comes out for Nissa, Vastwood Seer who I've been happy to see every time. Grabbing a forest out of the deck and flipping into a ramp/draw engine is perfect. I get much more utility out of Nissa than Claws. Still haven't had a chance to cast Season's Past and I'm still not sold on the card. I'm on the fence between Terastodon and Ulvenwald Hydra. It's a matter of reach vs. targeted removal.

Added Vedalken Engineer (just a better gold myr) and Smugglers Copter (gives us card draw AND a use for spare mana dorks)
