So you like planeswalkers?

Deck Help forum

Posted on April 17, 2014, 7:22 p.m. by MagicalHacker

I'm in the process of building a 5 color superfriends EDH deck featuring all the planeswalkers in magic history. yes, all of them.

I want to collect the planeswalkers while using them for a deck, but obviously, there aren't enough planeswalkers to fill a deck up, so my first question is what other cards should I use? I know that I want to use Contagion Engine , Doubling Season , Rings of Brighthearth , and Medomai the Ageless , since extra counters, extra abilities, and extra turns all do wonders for planeswalkers.

Also, there aren't any five color commanders that synergize with planeswalkers, so who should i use?

TL;DR What cards synergize with planeswalkers and what five color commander should I use for a planeswalker deck?

Sliver Queen is pretty common since it can create lots blockers to protect your walkers.

The issue with Sliver Queen is that she takes mana away from what I can use to actually cast planeswalkers. :/

and Progenitus will just show up too late to the party ><

Cromat , cause Cromat 's a boss.

If this deck isn't super competitive, Vorel of the Hull Clade with Mycosynth Lattice essentially functions as a doubling effect like Doubling Season .

Cromat unfortunately has the same issue as Sliver Queen requiring mana to be special.

Although, I like him less because he requires mana of specific colors which is gonna put stress on my mana base. But then again, sliver queen will put a target on me just because she is so powerful.

Also, those two cards only work when you have both. I'd hate to use cards that don't do anything without the 1/100 chance of getting the other card.

Well, when you are in the later part of the game and ready to cast the commander and use the abilities, all planeswalkers in your hand (well at least a lot of them) should be already cast.

I don't think you can be too picky about your commander. There are a grand total of 11 options for 5-color commanders: Atogatog , Reaper King , Sliver Legion , and Sliver Overlord are all tribal. That leaves you with 7 options. You've already rejected Sliver Queen , Progenitus ], and Cromat . Child of Alara seems like a bad idea, since you could potentially destroy all the 'walkers you've been building up. Karona, False God isn't so great, since it costs 6 and doesn't synergize with your probably-not-very-many-creatures base, so we're down to 2 left here: Horde of Notions and Scion of the Ur-Dragon . That's about all you've got left.

Well, you have 11 options for 5 color commanders. Atogatog , Horde of Notions , Reaper King , Scion of the Ur-Dragon , Sliver Legion , and Sliver Overlord all rely on tribal to be anything more than just a big body. That leaves you with five options. Karona, False God and Child of Alara seem anti-synergistic, giving your opponents ways to destroy your own walkers. All that remain are Cromat , Progenitus , and Sliver Queen . I think the Queen is the best of those three, because as was previously mentioned she offers a way to protect your walkers. Two mana is not a big deal, especially since it makes blockers at instant speed. Plus, you can throw in some extra slivers like Gemhide Sliver which will give you the color-fixing and ramp you'll need to make the deck run. If I were building this deck, there'd be no question. Go with the Queen.

Lol, there's no commander that sticks out to me for this deck.

Sliver Queen

Pros: Can make a chump-blocker for 2 colorless mana, and is a five drop.

Cons: Has a lot of negative energy and people usually target it first, and doesn't have flying.

Progenitus :

Pros: Unlimited blocking for no extra mana. And people recognize it as a casual commander.

Cons: Costs ten mana, and doesn't answer fliers.

Cromat :

Pros: Can destroy creatures it blocks before he gets dealt damage, be given flying, or regenerate, but for two specific colors of mana. Also, it costs five mana.

Cons: That colored mana is so rough to actually get.

Scion of the Ur-Dragon :

Pros: Cheap and can block fliers without having to pay mana.

Cons: No way to regenerate or make blockers, so its a chump blocker basically.

Sorry if I came off as "rejecting" suggestions, I was just trying to stimulate more discussion on them, since there aren't that many 5 color commanders, and none of them synergize with planeswalkers. :/

Cromat does synergize.

He is essentially a walker due to his abilities, he protects your walkers, he does it all. Also, since walker abilities are free there are going to be a TON on turns where you just go "Draw, walker abilities, go." Sounds like a damn good mana dump to me.

If you are having color problems try these suggestions: Joiner Adept , Coalition Relic , Chromatic Lantern , Prismatic Omen , etc.

You should have color fixing ANYWAY. Besides, all you really need is W/B and U/R.

Source: Just helped a friend with his Cromat superfriends.

Another thing that he added was one of each god. They are indestructible and the walkers add to devotion. They also synergize remarkably well together. My friend had out Purphoros, God of the Forge , popped Ajani, Caller of the Pride 's ult for 40 tokens.

I'll just leave this here ~ Justice League: Unlimited

It's not my deck but it's one of the most efficient super friends EDH decks i've ever seen and uses Sliver Queen .

Another fixing suggestion is Maze's End . Dont look at it as a wincon, (although if someone wasn't paying attention you could easily crack it) look at it rather as a color fix.

Ohthenoises I like where youre coming from, but my question is more about whether or not having to save mana for cromats abilities will prevent me from having mana to cast planeswalkers, especially since it takes specific colors (saving WB for the destroy ability might prevent me from casting Sorin Markov ). You know what I mean?

Bellock86, I like the deck, but what I'm trying to build is more focused on planeswalkers, in fact, I'm going to have all of them. So, with twice as many planeswalkers, its gonna be hard to have enough spots for sliver-oriented stuff...

Thank you guys so far with the suggestions, I like it! After thinking about it, because Cromat can get flying, and because he isn't just a chump blocker (like sliver queens tokens), I think he is the best commander for this deck! Thanks everyone!

What about other cards that synergize with planeswalkers? Are Contagion Clasp , Inexorable Tide , Thrummingbird , Throne of Geth , Plaguemaw Beast , or Viral Drake good for the deck?

April 17, 2014 10:14 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #21

Proliferate is a good mechanic. However in metas like mine that are HIGHLY prolific in Wrath of God effects Thrummingbird , Plaguemaw Beast , and Viral Drake don't live more than a turn or two.

Throne of Geth works better with something that can make artifact tokens so I'd probably leave it out.

That leaves Inexorable Tide , Contagion Engine , and Contagion Engine . It depends on what you have slots for. TBH the gods like I suggested are a better mana investment but hey? Who knows.

April 17, 2014 10:24 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #22

Well, the gods are good, don't get me wrong, but they don't really do anything for planeswalkers. What if I just get a whole bunch of indestructible creatures?

I could just get a whole bunch of board wipes and kill creatures all the time too. What about that idea?

I could also find cards that hurt people attacking planeswalkers like Blood Reckoning . Should I use these?

April 17, 2014 10:28 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #23

Well it's not about the gods doing things for the walkers. Look at it like this: The walkers build devotion to the gods. You could have a Garruk Wildspeaker , Kiora, the Crashing Wave , Nylea, God of the Hunt , and any other walker with G in it's cost. Now you have an Indestructible god. Now Xenagos, God of Revels comes out as a creature and has trample, etc, etc.

It's more of a symbiotic relationship.

You could run the wipes but that does neuter your Primal Surge .

Pillowfort is another option. It requires that you run quite a few enchantments to support Sphere of Safety USUALLY. Ghostly Prison effects don't usually work well without the full suite.

April 17, 2014 10:37 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #24

Well, most of the gods work off of creatures so much, that I'm afraid that they won't have enough other cards to do enough. However, indestructible creatures can work because they each block one thing and become an infinite chump blocker. But there are a lot of them, and so many of them are really expensive. Like all the myojins.

April 17, 2014 10:58 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #26

I think I'm going to take off the indestructible creatures and put combat-control cards: Ensnaring Bridge , Magus of the Moat , Moat , Peacekeeper , Stormtide Leviathan , Caverns of Despair , Dueling Grounds , and take out Crawlspace since it doesn't do anything for my superfriends.

That's 65 cards, which just leaves lands. I should have enough token-making planeswalkers that the enchantments do what they need to do.

MagicalHacker says... #27

Err, since Moat is 300 dollars, I'm gonna make it Mystic Barrier instead.

Maybe even Clockspinning as a manasink. Some ramp effects as well are essential to any EDH, so i would reserve around 10 slots for that.

I suggest Lighthouse Chronologist if you like extra turns and are proliferating already. Plus, if he's not answered, he kicks ass in multiplayer. Darksteel Plate that guy, son!

Also, if flying chump blockers is something you need, consider using Levitation or similar effects and a token engine. Perhaps Sliver Queen .

It's okay! I do like Cromat the best due to his flyingableness and his deathtouchableness.

Here's the deck I have now:
