"Budget" Yawgmoth (Under $10)

Commander / EDH Mono-Black

GrinderMan

So this is a "budget" list I decided to make for two reasons, first to play Mono-Black without making everyone miserable (I have cards like Chains of Mephistopheles and Nether Void which I enjoy, but I understand why others don't), and to challenge myself to make a concise list while not having a card that is over $10. This is meant so that I can play with different cards since decks can be very homogenized if you can build without a budget (Of course I don't mean to say that all commanders are going to have the same cards or even play the same way, but cards like Cabal/Urborg are main stays in Mono-Black, and stuff like Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Toxic Deluge, and other staples could all slot into here as well as other decks).

I chose Yawgmoth because The Commander's Quarters made a video a while ago for $25 (Honestly incredible how he does that, and I'm really happy he does!), and while this deck won't be that cheap I wanted to still have some sort of restraint on it. Yawgmoth is also really good on a budget, probably one of the best because cards like Sengir Autocrat, Haunted Dead, and Dreadhorde Invasion are fantastic cards and really cheap too, and they're also good in the non-budget variant. It also helps that he draws a ton of cards on average, so tutors aren't as hard of a loss to the deck. The ramp is also pretty cheap as we still have Caged Sun, Crypt Ghast and Nirkana Revanant, so the loss of Cabal/Urborg isn't as much of a feel bad either (Though they are wonderful to have and we need a reprint of Cabal PLEASE FOR US MONO BLACK PLAYERS).

I have this deck in paper and made it as accurate as possible variant wise except there are more than a couple foils that I didn't change because I wanted to see how the deck price is when it comes to non-foil variants to know how much this deck would run a person (The foil Dark Ritual is $80!). If there are any cards over $10, they've probably just changed because a new commander was spoiled that the card would go well in or supply dwindled or something of that sort. Some cards barely scraped the budget like Torment of Hailfire so bare with me.

The plan is to see how this plays and cut the budget down further once I figure out what I can slot out for cheaper stuff that still helps the deck or is a suitable, cheaper replacement for the card I'm taking out. For example, taking out a Torment of Hailfire for a card that could also act as a win condition, or maybe for a Swiftfoot Boots if I keep finding my Yawgmoth being sent back to the command zone. I plan to put that in at some point.

Hope you like the deck, should pack a punch still while being more budget! I plan to make this alongside another Mono-Black deck (Probably Sidisi) as a stax deck so I can play them both with different people depending on the decks they own.

Yes, the only pay off for the Snow-Covered Swamps is Dead of Winter, because Toxic Deluge is too much and I enjoy it a bunch so it'll go here, and it actually synergies with Yawgmoth better since you can save more life for sacrificing your dudes, though having an option to not kill Yawgmoth is kind of nice on the latter so there's that too. If there are any other Snow-Covered payoff that aren't Arcum's Astrolabe or Extraplanar Lens, let me know! I might be interested in a subtheme for it.

Thanks for reading, have a lovely day!
