Punish for tapping mana and untapping mana?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hello fellow magicians. I am seeking cards that punish players (i dont mind if it includes me) for tapping mana and untapping mana and not tapping mana at all. I need cards that slow down the game and make it very hard to even get anything on the board. while struggling to get things on the board i want to ping players for small amounts of damage that will eventually lead to their death. I am playing a chaotic style Norin the Wary mono red edh deck (here is a link to my deck) Flipping Chaotic... i will be rarely attacking or playing creatures. the creatures i do play i will use them for their abilities or i will be flickering them in and out to deal small amounts of damage like i mentioned earlier. tokens i generate will be blockers. cards I am interested in for pinging damage and slowing things down would be things like Citadel of Pain, Impatience, Manabarbs, Power Surge, Static Orb, Storm Cauldron, Sulfuric Vortex, Price of Glory, Warstorm Surge, Pandemonium, Smoke, and things like Purphoros, God of the Forge ability when creatures come into the battle field. are there cards like this that i can add to my list that do things that are similar? I am also wondering if there is a card that pings players for damage for having all their mana tapped or pings them for 1 damage for each untapped mana before the untap step like a version of Power Surge or Citadel of Pain. I really enjoy strange ideas like this. let me know your ideas i would really enjoy it! thank you!!

The only card I can think of right now is Citadel of Pain. But there are plenty of cards like it.

Mana Web with Tangle Wire is a personal favorite.

Stoneshaker Shaman: makes it so everyone has to tap their lands unless they want them sacrificed.

War's Toll: can stop counters and it forces everyone to tap out.

Genesis Chamber: Norin shenanigans 101 lol. Just a special mention.

Impact Tremors: Backup to Purphorous. With a lot of artifacts Myr Incubator can be an alternate win con with this or Purphy.

Heat Stroke: Chaos, and Norin has no problems with this. Grand Melee is in a similar vein with this and War's Toll forming a neat little combo.

Bend or Break: MLD chaos and seems hilarious.

Burning Earth: really punishes those non-mono colored decks.

Mana web is awesome and I have tanglewire in my deck already! my deck is posted on my profile if anyone would like to take a peek. some of the cards i listed in this post are not in my deck yet. The deck is still a work in progress, just trying to figure out what direction i want to go with it. I recently played with it up at my local card shop and realized how good storm cauldron is against decks that use mana that come into play tapped which apparently is the majority of land that most people play with at my local card shop. Thats where i got this idea from. When i had storm cauldron out so many opponents kept on passing turn, thats where i got the concept of citadel of pain and power surge.

A few more ideas (Sorry, I hate posting one card suggestions at a time but the ole noggin isn't as sharp tonight so bear with me):

Obsidian Fireheart: for their own lands now ping them whether or not they tap them. Perhaps a bit slow and mana intensive but it could work, especially if an opponent has 3 or more counters on their lands.

Blood Moon/Magus of the Moon: These cards recently shot up in price but they are brutal.

Price of Progress: Nuff said really.

Ruination/From the Ashes: These spells reeeeally hamper multicolored decks and screws over their mana fixing. Also gets rid of annoying utility lands.

Just realized from the ashes and stranglehold combo......wow that is brutal..

:) The great thing about that combo is each card is powerful enough on it's own.

And if you have Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle out with 3-5 other nonbasics then that's just gravy

Flipping Chaotic..

Don't know if this is of any use but Outpost Siege naming Dragons hits them when your Creatures are on the way out the door.

Manabarbs feels like it needs to be added to this discussion.

Ankh of Mishra type of effects also combo well with From the Ashes)

Flagellum says... #20

Dingus Egg acts as the opposite to Ankh of Mishra but only becomes effective really with MLD or if they're running all the fetch lands.

Other critters similar to Norin but not as good: Grinning Ignus, Glitterfang. Both do good work with purphy and Genesis Chamber. If you want more purphy interactions I do run him as a commander here: Purphy's Goblin Party

I will second Repercussion as it can change aggro strategies and makes burn spells like Blasphemous Act into gg. I've ran into it before and it was hilarious.

Other Furnace of Rath effects if you're interested in that route:

Bitter Feud

Dictate of the Twin Gods

Overblaze

Curse of Bloodletting

ok so I added a few more cards and removed a few more but im planning on still replacing more (i have not updated the decklist on here yet). ive incorperaded rush effects into my deck. and i might be getting rid of winter orb ect because all it really does is make people mad and it screws me over too. I think the biggest problem with this deck is that i become a target so quickly that every game is me verses the table. i dont mind being that guy but is there any way i can be that guy and survive? i was thinking about cards like Glacial Chasm any other "cant touch this" style cards that i could incorporate in a mono red deck?

Dredge4life says... #22

Crawlspace and Aligned Hedron Network can help stem the bleeding. Cheap wraths like Anger of the Gods can kill off aggro. There's a legendary ogre that gives you a 3/1 when a creature attacks you, that could be useful.

JonnyIV says... #23

I don't know if budget would be a problem but Ensnaring Bridge could also stop the majority of the attacks pointed your way.

January 26, 2016 11:19 p.m.

ive thought about Ensnaring Bridge before. budget isnt a real big problem. ive thought of things like Ward of Bones too just to put a hold on things.

January 27, 2016 1 a.m.

JonnyIV says... #25

I haven't heard of Ward of Bones before but it seems like it would work if you can get it out pre-emptively. The problem would be that if it came out latter you'd need another card such as a wrath in addition to Ward of Bones.

I just came across Contaminated Ground in my collection the other day.

Would that help?

January 27, 2016 7:30 a.m.

JonnyIV says... #27

Not really, as it's just targeting one land the effect is to small for EDH. Also you're running norin as your commander so you can't use that.

Price of Glory...Rude.

Naked Singularity <- this card is so BONKERS!

January 27, 2016 1:56 p.m.

oh my god i am putting that unto my Progenitus deck!!!!!

January 27, 2016 2:18 p.m.

Flagellum says... #30

Meh, Blood Moon is better than Naked Singularity. It's upkeep cost is pretty high and it essentially has the same but opposite effect. NS won't hurt multicolored decks since most don't run a lot of basics. Whereas Blood Moon can take Maze of Ith, Gaea's Cradle, or Cabal Coffers down a peg or two as well as hose those multicolored decks. Contamination is black's equivalent.

January 27, 2016 2:43 p.m.

LTmiller says... #31

Flagellum, I can understand what your saying but Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith say otherwise on the upkeep cost. Naked Singularity is sheer shenanigans essentially. It makes games really, really, REALLY fun!

January 28, 2016 7:38 a.m.

Flagellum says... #32

Naked Singularity cannot be used in a Norin mono red deck, which is what the OP was asking about. Blood Moon however, (s)he can use. If you have Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth (which both are currently not in the deck) active you're probably looking for a finisher like Exsanguinate, ect. rather then more shenanigans. But yes, Naked Singularity would have synergy with what I think the OP was wanting if it could be used. Although, relying on a combo to keep something active in a color that has no tutors aside from Gamble isn't the best play imo :p

January 28, 2016 1:01 p.m.

I know that Naked Singularity cannot be put into a Norin the Wary deck. Its very random that he posted it on this thread but i am happy he did because now it is in my Progenitus deck. I like that Rings of Brighthearth. that might be an add. I still need to post an update of the deck. I am intending on adding both Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon.
