Second Big Update —May 23, 2019

IN

  • Dreadhorde Arcanist - I'm not sure how I missed this originally, but this card is insane; it's so much value and it's undeniably worth it's slot
  • Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin - honestly a very solid card, makes lots of tokens, puts pressure on opponents early, and is very easy to buff
  • Labyrinth Champion - I go on and off with this thing honestly; I can't decide whether or not I truly like it, but it's back in for the time being as it is one of the better heroic creatures for steady damage and not big bursts
  • Ojutai Exemplars - tap down attackers or blockers is the main thing; can also function as lifegain
  • Runaway Steam-Kin - again with this one, on and off again, but it does feel like a good mana engine when you have red cards; otherwise it can feel clunky and useless, but that's a factor in this being a white heavy deck
  • Ajani's Presence - indestructible is invaluable
  • Samut's Sprint - pump spell with scry; relevant with the addition of Krenko and just as a way to help pressure planeswalkers or opponents
  • Titan's Strength - see Samut's Sprint
  • Wild Slash - prevents fog effects
  • Primal Amulet  Flip - this card looks underwhelming in a deck of mostly one cmc spells, but holy shit is it good; the front side is okay on it's own with a lot of the interaction being 2+ cmc, and it really starts to shine on the back side; being able to use chaos warp on a token **and** an opponent's permanent with it going back to your hand at the end of turn is satisfying as hell
  • Myth Realized - good early and if you can protect it, pretty mediocre otherwise; has won me games singlehandedly though, so it puts in it's work OUT
    • Guttersnipe - just not good enough honestly; makes me a huge threat and doesn't kill fast enough or hit planeswalkers
    • Knight of the White Orchid - two mana rock is probably just better
    • Silverclad Ferocidons - haha wow this card is so bad in my deck
    • Stoneforge Mystic - too narrow
    • Tethmos High Priest - too narrow; this deck doesn't recover with recursion, it recovers by just powering through the board wipe; most of what you're losing is tokens anyways
    • Aurelia's Fury - kind of mad I fell for the hype of this card; great in 1v1, bad in multiplayer
    • Magnetic Theft - too narrow
    • Spawning Breath - just bad
    • Grapeshot - just a bad version of Sentinel Tower
    • Heal - slowtrips aren't great
    • Panic - slowtrips aren't great Thank you TappedOut community for your continued interest and support. <3

Just curious how you’re liking cards such as Mox Amber and Niveous Wisps in your list? Are they restrictive at all in your testing?

I’ve been debating adding Amber to my own list just for additional colored mana; but the possibility of having a “dead card” in hand feels really harsh to me... however being able to drop it alongside Feather to have open protection also sounds decent.

As far as cards like Wisps, Heal , and Bandage go; are you getting your mileage out of them simply for the card draw? Or are you also getting use out of their abilities? I understand your reasoning for not using more combat oriented/ narrow cards such as Psychotic Fury or Balduvian Rage in the list; though I would be hard pressed to drop my Rage for anything due to just how potent double strike is on Feather.

Been lurking on your list for a while, keep it up!

Also, how are your creatures treating you? Things like Soul-Scar Mage and Setessan Battle Priest are cute cards; though I struggle to see what mileage you’re getting out of Soul Scar Mage. You aren’t running much in the way of burn; so is he not a dead draw most of the time? Is his prowess the only thing helping you?

The obvious Heroic synergy is present with the Priest; though is her lifegain that relevant to you? Or is that a more meta dependent include?

I personally have been using Dreadhorde Arcanist to great effect as it allows me to start dumping hand buffs early without Feather support, benefit from the draws; and then pick them back up later. Also, and while I’m poking at your creatures; is there any particular reason you havent mentioned Zada, Hedron Grinder or Mirrorwing Dragon anywhere? Since you are using “janky” card draw effects such as Heal , I’m sure you would appreciate being able to draw a couple extra cards alongside your normal targets no?

Really like the inclusion of the Tethmos High Priest in your list and am struggling to find a place for him in my own list.

Grahamatica - those effects are nice but take up precious slots in the decklist I personally can't afford to give up

SineroKirinashi - that card is extremely cool and I appreciate the suggestion - I'm going to try testing it even if it doesn't make the final cut because it seems really cool

Dhominus - wow, I never saw that interaction before, which explains why so many other lists have it; thanks so much for the suggestion, snap include

Drazatis - the cards that just draw me cards and really do nothing else have been amazing for me; they dig to what I need and they can be cast on anyone's turn. If there were more instant speed one mana cantrips that targeted in these colors I would run them, believe me

Balduvian Rage is a specific no for me because while it is instant and a decent pump spell late game, I don't really ever want to be tapping out just to attack, and you can never target your own things with it on someone else's turn, which basically makes it a sorcery, so it feels like a dud to me; I did, however, just add Psychotic Fury and Temur Battle Rage back in for the second or third time, as they're the most reliably combat tricks to me personally and they pair nicely with either Feather's evasion or the beefiness of something like Tenth District Legionnaire

Soul-Scar Mage is mostly there to deal with indestructibility or very large creatures, but you could reasonably cut it if you aren't running into that a lot. Zada and Mirrorwing are great, but for me they overload me on cards and are too expensive to reasonably use. The deck has so much card advantage anyways, I find I don't need the huge bursts. Dreadhorde is something I'm still testing now and then, but I'm never having great success with it. Thanks for following so long and for the suggestions!

Also Mox Amber is stellar and I highly recommend it.

How are you finding Intimidation Bolt works for you? Also, with such a low land count do you find yourself Mulling alot?

May 5, 2019 9:31 p.m.

Control_Train says... #7

Intimidation bolt is one of the best cards in the deck. It absolutely neuters non-blue decks that must attack to win.

I rarely take a mulligan to six.

zapyourtumor says... #8

I still think you should reconsider Zada, Hedron Grinder and Mirrorwing Dragon . They can help accelerate you into your Grapeshot storm win, and can take the entire table by surprise.

May 5, 2019 10:44 p.m.

CuteSnail says... #9

Copies don't trigger storm, so I'm not exactly certain how Zada interacts favorably with Grapeshot.

May 5, 2019 11:04 p.m.

Klancik says... #10

Might look into Paradox Engine . It untaps all your rocks and creatures with each non creature spell you cast, getting your Grapeshot some big numbers each turn. Not to mention the Sunforger + Paradox Engine + Mistveil Plains combo that grabs Chance for Glory and Angel's Grace each turn.

May 6, 2019 10:49 a.m.

Control_Train says... #11

Not into infinite combos or cards that are bad on their own such as any of those. Paradox Engine in a deck with only six rocks is a feel bad. My cmc is also low enough I can dump my hand without it. Extra turn card is dead without Angel’s Grace and Grace has limited functionality on its own. Engine also doesn’t untap Mistveil so I don’t think this goes infinite quite like you think.

glorystain says... #12

Gonna suggest Ojutai Exemplars . Still surprised they don't get more love...

Icing a creature every time you cast a cantrip is a potent ability both offensively and defensively, and first strike/lifelink can both be relevant.

May 6, 2019 2:52 p.m.

Suns_Champion says... #13

Control_Train I see and respect that view on the basically sorcery-speed Balduvian Rage .

May 6, 2019 3:37 p.m.

A creature I would like to suggest is Serra Ascendant . Essentially serves as a 6/6 flyer with lifelink and a good candidate for a handful of cantrips found in this deck. Can also be tutorable with Imperial Recruiter and Recruiter of the Guard

May 6, 2019 6:27 p.m.

mirrorwing dragon, zada, hedron grinder, samut's sprint, nahiri's stoneblades.

May I ask how you get away with having so few lands? Are the Mox artifacts making up for that much mana? I’m not super experienced and all the decks I play have a minimum of like 35 lands.

May 10, 2019 11:37 p.m.

CuteSnail says... #17

Amount of lands necessary in a deck revolves around your average converted Mana cost. 35 lands is probably necessary with an ACMC of 3.5~, but this deck has an ACMC of 2.14, and so you need fewer lands to cast your spells.

Competitive edh decks operate on this principle. They try to keep their curve as low to the ground (thanks Ad Nauseam ) so they can speed up their game plan, and thus run fewer lands. Plus the moxen help, both in speed and in Mana mitigation.

What do you think about Selfless Squire ? I play a few game with my Feather and now I'm often attacked first and need to deal mostly by dragons. Slefless Squire help with prevent all this damage, specialy when you have Cloudshift in your hand.

glorystain - I really like this card, and it came up in my original list and got cut somewhere along the line on the road to 99; that being said, I really like it because it rewards me for playing the deck and I'll probably be adding it back, so thanks for bringing it back to my attention

SoukaJerkCoach - Serra Ascendant is neat, but it doesn't do much other than be big and gain some life, which isn't quite what I'm looking for, but thanks for the suggestion

BountyHunter200 - I've gone over this before but I'll say it again because the comments may have gotten archived; Zada and Mirrorwing over draw me really badly to the point of decking myself and nonbo with things like Cloudshift and tokens or the heroic creatures that grow in size because it removes all their counters

tallcan88 - NecroPony put it pretty well, but essentially my curve is so low to the ground that once I hit three lands for Feather I'm set for a while, and I'm still running 34 mana sources, just not in the form of lands; I'm personally the type of player to scrape buy with as few lands as possible so I have as few dead draws later in the game as possible, and I've never had issues with the land count I'm at now (if you really want to watch a deck run the bare minimum, my Yuriko deck runs 29 lands and a whopping two mana rocks with no moxen)

NecroPony - thanks for the rundown and the support <3

Omega505 - Selfless Squire seems really good for you in your meta and I would run it probably if I were running more blink effects, which you can certainly do to increase the synergy there; the interaction seems really powerful at stopping you from dying, and I'll likely test it myself even if it doesn't make the final cut

What do you think about arcane spells ? I get it won't enter in your list since it require a lot of slot but melting Blessed Breath onto Crack the Earth or Lava Spike would open new roads for a Feather - arcane spell.

First of all, thanks for making a primer on this commander! There are a lot of people starting to play this one since release, but not a lot of in depth content out yet. I have some suggestions based around my play experience with this deck:

  • Mirrorwing Dragon and Zada, Hedron Grinder : I feel Feather works best when you can go off and kill someone in one turn, usually with commander damage. These two creatures enable you to go wide while still benefiting from the instants and sorceries you are already playing in feather. Cards like Bandage go from draw one every turn to draw 1 card every turn for each creature you control, all for just 1 mana. If you are ever worried about decking yourself, just don't cast the draw card targeting these creatures. Pump spells can easily turn into 1 mana Overrun s. Usually the turn I drop this, as long as I have leftover mana to play other pump spells, I can win the game.

  • Dreadhorde Arcanist : This guy is a house. You are naturally running pump spells in your deck, so you won't have a problem casting spells out of your gy. Some cards you run in the deck, such as Path to Exile , Council's Judgment or Chaos Warp , won't recur with feather, so being able to cast them another time for free is huge.

  • Twinflame , Ajani's Presence and Launch the Fleet : works best with either of the two aforementioned creatures, but can also work with strive. Can win games pretty fast when you swing with even just a couple creatures. Ajani's presence has saved my board countless times from board wipes as well.

  • Samut's Sprint , Brute Strength , etc: Most of my games with feather end in drawing into Temur Battle Rage and casting on feather when she is power 11 or greater. This requires many small cmc, efficient pump spells to fill your draws in the early game.

Cards I would replace:

  • Veilstone Amulet and Scroll of the Masters : Veilstone amulet can be accomplished with other cards we play for less mana ( eg. Apostle's Blessing, shelter, etc. ). Spending 3 mana to drop a do-nothing artifact isn't where the deck wants to be. Scroll of Masters is cute but I think we can get better effects in just the instants and sorceries we run.

  • Sentinel Tower and Guttersnipe : I considered both of these cards when making the deck, but I found they played out too slow. I couldn't find a time when I would like to cast Sentinel Tower rather than spend mana casting a draw spell on feather. Guttersnipe felt the same way. He also tends to attract a lot of hate when I'm not ready to finish my opponents. The nice thing about feather is you can amass enough card advantage by the mid game where you can explode and possibly one-shot your opponent.

  • Akroan Conscriptor is a bit slow and can provide no value depending on the board state.

  • I don't know how I feel about Grapeshot . I guess you will be playing 3-5 spells each turn, but a reusable card to deal 5 damage to a target every turn seems pretty slow to me. You should be able to not care about an opponents creatures most of the time ( she has flying, can give protection with various spells in deck, etc ) so killing creatures isn't as valuable and doing 5 damage to an opponents face is pretty lackluster.

  • Silverclad Ferocidons : A card that is > 5 mana should win the game for you when you play it. This card doesn't do that. I would much rather play 5-6 of my cheap instants/sorceries then play this card in a turn.

There are probably other cards I could think of and recommend, but I'm still working on my own list and tweaking it as I play the deck. Thanks again for writing a primer on this commander! Enjoy!

Another idea, slow but could be good - Neheb, the Eternal He maybe cost 5 mana but Feather can deal so much damage...

All of you guys seem like awesome deck builders. Could you guys check out my Whisper deck and give me some feedback? Trying to fine tune it as much as possible within the guidelines of my meta which are laid out in the description.

Control_Train says... #24

Phyras - that's a really neat interaction, however there is only one really usable Splice card and very few Arcane spells that are good enough even if you manage to Splice consistently, which isn't doable; it's definitely a neat idea though, and if we ever go back to Kamigawa and get more Splice helpers, this could be a route to take

Omega505 - five mana that doesn't do much other than generate red mana isn't that great for my build; I don't have a lot of mana sinks as my curve is insanely low

LordCyrodil - Mirrorwing and Zada; I've been over this several times, but the TLDR is that I don't like them because they don't do anything on their own and they overdraw me because of tokens

Dreadhorde Arcanist I'm currently testing as I have been since the deck's inception; it's looking good, just didn't make the final cut on the first "real" iteration

Twinflame seems like a really bad Cloudshift, Ajani's Presence I'm trying to find space for without cutting any existing protection spells, and Launch the Fleet was atrocious for me

Don't like pump spells because they don't DO anything, other than Scry 1 if I'm lucky; the power is rarely nice for me, and I have Leering Emblem for Voltron kills, which is not even the first backup plan for me

Veilstone Amulet turns every spell into a Swiftfoot Boots on every creature; it substitutes for a one time, one target protection spell, far too good to cut

Scroll of the Masters has won me games on it's own with double strike and a few without; bad late game, sure, but it's ungodly when you land it turn two and it never leaves play

Sentinel Tower is literally the most disgusting card in this deck and it is absolutely uncuttable for any reason; It's a win condition, a field wipe, or easy spot removal

Guttersnipe, on the other hand, I'm considering cutting because doing raw damage doesn't really progress the game and just draws hate

Akroan Constriptor I won't cut, because it's amazing on it's own, and it goes into overdrive with either Cloudshift of Phyrexian Altar; this card singlehandedly made someone I know refuse to play with me ever again, so it's pretty good

I've been looking to cut Grapeshot since I added Sentinel Tower because sorcery speed seriously, seriously sucks

Silverclad Ferocidons is definitely getting cut; it's too build around, and I just don't have the deck for it

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!

At this point, would you rule out Launch the Fleet & Goblinslide ?

Does Leering Emblem really own it’s spot?

Never thought of Scroll of the Masters setting off, but I’m gonna give that a try now
