Goblinslide Discussion

Risque on Shamans Altar budget deck series, Zada.

So far it looks pretty consistent. I don't know if these suggestions will really help you, but they're some that came to my mind when I looked at this deck.

Siege-Gang Commander, Goblinslide, Goblin Offensive, Goblin Trashmaster, Quest for the Goblin Lord, Volley Veteran, Reckless One

Heyo

R/U always has issues with enchantments, thats just a handicap that those colors have, and you dont have much in the way of answers honestly. Aside from Chaos Warp, you are basically relying on blues ability to counterspell/bounce for these things. Yes its rough, but hey, you wanted a challenge, right? ;)

There are ways to dissuade people from attacking you, although if you are wanting to stick to inst/sorc, its pretty limited. Illusionist's Gambit, Disrupt Decorum, and weird stuffs like that can offer temporary protection while being instants. Otherwise, you are looking at adding more artifacts and enchantments that will protect and dissuade attacks. Collective Restraint is a shitty propaganda here, Meekstone can slow things down but doesnt solve token threats well, and Dissipation Field taxes pretty good but can allow your opponents to re-use ETB creatures n stuff. Bonfire of the Damned could be added to your burn list, since it shouldnt be hard to get it on the top of your deck when you need it. Volcanic Vision is also a good add.

Metallurgic Summonings, Goblinslide, and the pyromancer are decent chump blocker engines. Summonings is an alt wincon even :D

As far as ramping goes, there is a lot of static ramp effects for inst/sorc. You have quite a few in your SB already, and Id suggest adding a few if you are intending on doing a lot of spellcasting each turn. I would not suggest arcane melee however, its symmetrical effect can be rough I have found.

If you are wanting to keep all of that artifact ramp in there though, I would suggest switching some around for draw effects, such as Commander's Sphere, Mind Stone, ect, as they can be very useful drawing past non-inst/sorc when needed.

Its hard to get any decent lifegain in these colors and without much in the way of creatures. I mean, Basilisk Collar is probably your best bet...? haha

More copies are are good, and Cast Through Time and Swarm Intelligence do it for free.

Random secret tech, Bosium Strip.

Final advice, run more topdeck manipulation. If you want to be all tricksy, run a bunch of the instant ones to make some super convoluted stacks with Melek out. It can get pretty nutso.

Impulse, Spy Network, Trickery Charm, and Telling Time are probably the go-to cards for that. Otherwise theres a bunch of sorcery ones, must haves being Ponder, Preordain, and the MVP Mystic Speculation. Portent and Index also pull their weight here. But if you want to be more proactive with your topdeck manipulation, theres stuff like Discombobulate, Condescend, and Fated Conflagration.

Token generators for protection from attacks:Talrand, Sky Summoner and Docent of Perfection  Flip i would say are must haves, Metallurgic Summonings, Goblinslide, Young Pyromancer,Murmuring Mystic, Dragonmaster Outcast, are also good token makers.

Mana ramping for casting more: Seething Song, Mana Geyser, Brass's Bounty i think are must haves since they're all sorcery/instant so they can be effected by your commander to cast for less. Chandra, Torch of Defiance is a another good planeswalker to get mana and now you can have both planeswalkers out with the updated rules from August. You should add Vivid Creek to go with your vivid crag.

Dual Casting is nice to throw on a token, its a cheap way to copy a spell especially mana spells.Cast Through Time, and Swarm Intelligence are also good copy casters.

Other cards to lower casting costs: Primal Amulet  Flip is a must since it lowers cost of ins/sorc and then it transforms when you want to get a land that can copy a spell. Arcane Melee, Seal of the Guildpact, Ruby Medallion,Sapphire Medallion,Jace's Sanctum are also nice.

Cards that damage opponents: Electrostatic Field and Sphinx-Bone Wand i think are must haves since they deal damage for every inst/sorc casted. Banefire, Devil's Play are great since they have the (x) in the cmc which is great for mizzix since it counts towards what you want (x) to be and you can always get an extra counter for mizzex.

Merchant Scroll is a decent tutor

Protection: Propaganda, Wild Ricochet are great, Tablet of the Guilds is a good way for lifegain that red/blue lacks.Ionize is a great counter.

Great staples: Charmbreaker Devils is a must have for the returning of inst/sorc alone. Crackling Drake can get huge power. Hypersonic Dragon casting sorcery at instant speed is great. Structural Collapse destroy a land and deal damage, and if copy it, who wouldn't want that, besides your enemies of coarse.

Wincons: Reiterate + Turnabout and Grand Architect + Pili-Pala are infinite mana combos, add Past in Flames or any damage cards with (x) in it and its deadly. Enter the Infinite is nice to get your combo's. Harness by Force is great to steal your opponents creatures then attack them with it, it also gets affected by mizzix so if you have enough counters itll cost 2 red mana and 1red mana for each extra creature.

Hope these suggestions help.

Driemer84: Thank you for your thoughts on the deck! Apologies for taking a while to get back to you; I've been super busy recently. Just bought the cards for this in cardboard yesterday so I've been testing as well. My thoughts:

Sharding Sphinx is bonkers here. It's one of my favorite things to replicate with Brudiclad, heh. He does amazing work in this deck, and I'm happy to finally have a deck for one of my pet cards.

Karn, Scion of Urza's constructs are really powerful, and justified the $$$ cost of including him. I'll try to get my hands on the artifact lands, because you're right - that does seem very helpful here.

Consecrated Sphinx is just a Good Card, but also amazing in duplicates and synergizes with several other things in the deck. I'm very happy with what it's done so far.

I took your advice on Goblinslide and Young Pyromancer, though I chose to add different cards. Having played a bit more, I also agree that the creatures opponents have are not necessarily "up to snuff" or legendary, so to speak, so I've been shifting a bit more towards self-copying. I'll let you know how it turns out!

RedbeardVII: Hey, free slot! Thanks! XD

@xJonahSlayerx: Yeah, card draw and removal are definitely key. For card advantage, Apex of Power, Dark-Dweller Oracle, Mind's Eye, Outpost Siege, Reforge the Soul and Skullclamp. For removal, I'm running Aligned Hedron Network, Blasphemous Act, Burn at the Stake, By Force, Goblin Bombardment and Vandalblast among others. Try sorting the deck by custom categories to see everything I have under Card Advantage and Removal.

@Neth: Hmmm, trade life for ? Yeah, I could see adding Treasonous Ogre. I'll have to pick one up.

@Shinkusenshi: I used to run Goblinslide in the early days of this deck. I really liked the idea of Goblinslide, but found in practice it added too little value compared to other cards that could take that card slot in the deck.

@iwhaleme: There's only 1 copy of Pia and Kiran Nalaar. I had the deck set to sort by custom categories, so it was showing that Pia and Kiran serve multiple roles in the deck, both generating tokens and dealing damage. I've changed the default sorting back to Type for clarity that cards aren't actually in there multiple times.

@SirFowler: Altar of the Brood's not a bad idea, I just have trouble thinking of what I'd cut to make room for it. I'll keep in in mind next time I find something to cut.

Okay, so I did some checking around and found an edhrec article on Brudiclad, and they set some good ground rules for the deck:

Firstly, don't go for too many styles of play. You've got a ton of sources for token creation, and there's no reason to short yourself by being greedy about the kinds you'd like. (by example I feel you have too few spells to trigger Young Pyromancer atm)

Secondly, there is a big difference in going big and going wide as well as versatility and power. All your tokens becoming big and hasty isn't the same as being small with special abilities. (big difference in token beaters and token Eldrazi scions)

I would point out that the article covers only two builds: artifacts or spell slinger. You say you want to emphasize a clone/theft build, but honestly I'm not sure Brudiclad is well suited to that. To my knowledge such a build would rather play Mind Control and Threaten than Goblinslide or Goblin Assault (at least to name the weaker cards I see you running).

I will say that if you want to just run a bunch of random good stuff cards to make tokens of, then you need the following package: Soul Separator, Soul Foundry, God-Pharaoh's Gift, and Back from the Brink. Those cards, plus Mimic Vat and the Feldon in your maybe board, act as a perfect graveyard package for whatever other creatures you want to run. Other "packages" you should look into are ETB copy effects (see Blade of Selves, sacrifice outlets (like Goblin Bombardment for having a mass token hoard), and if you decide to run any tokens that generate mana there's always "x-spells".

Best of luck to you! I can definitely say that I'll be trying out that grave package, but if you get to it first let me know how it plays in your meta! Also as a disclaimer I don't know what running some of these packages will do to the power level of your deck. It may be lower tier, or it may be too OP for your playgroup. Use with caution.
