MOM, I Made You a Deck [Primer v1.0]

Commander / EDH Mono-White Primer

MrNoCards

Maybeboard

This Primer is a work in progress and advice on writing a primer is welcome.

Draw is the first and most important of the three pillars of a MTG deck. It is also enjoyable, and you might see that new card you added five games ago and still have not seen it for some reason.

ETB Draw

These are the bread and butter of this deck. With Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines on the battlefield, each of these creatures will net you two cards and can be used as a blink target for a repeatable draw.

  1. Spirited Companion
  2. Rumor Gatherer
  3. Roving Harper
  4. Recruiter of the Guard
  5. Priest of Ancient Lore
  6. Inspiring Overseer
  7. Wall of Omens
  8. Sun Titan

ETB only once a turn

  1. Welcoming Vampire - While the card states, "This ability triggers only once each turn." Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines allows it to trigger twice.

One-Time Recursion

  1. Ascend from Avernus - If cast at the right moment, this card can end the game. The amount of ETB triggers will be

Repeatable Draw/ Recursion

  1. Hall of Heliod's Generosity - while there are only four enchantments in this deck, they are valuable, and you will want them back.
  2. Emeria, the Sky Ruin - Having seven plains is super easy to achieve in a Mono-white deck that runs 29 Snow-Covered Plains.
  3. War Room - and one life for a card is reasonable.
  4. Loran of the Third Path - Removel and Politics.
  5. Wedding Ring - If you can hold off getting married until Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines is on the battlefield, then you will be able to marry two people at your table instead of just one. Wedding Ring + Smothering Tithe + flickering any ETB card draw creature will likely net you a lot of treasure tokens.

The second Pillar is Ramp. Without it, you are not playing MTG.

ETB Land Fetch Without Restrictions

These two creatures on ETB allow you to fetch land without stipulating that your opponents control more land than you. With Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines you will be fetching two lands instead of one.

  1. Solemn Simulacrum
  2. Kor Cartographer

ETB Land Fetch With Restrictions

These two creatures require that your opponents control more land than you. While this is annoying, they can help you ramp in the early game as they are only . With Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines you will be fetching two lands instead of one.

  1. Knight of the White Orchid
  2. Loyal Warhound

Ramp - Other

  1. Smothering Tithe - Is it annoying? Yes. Is it effective? Yes. Is it needed in this deck? I own it.... so Yes. Also, do you pay the ?
  2. Extraplanar Lens - This deck runs Snow-Covered Plains to allow us to take full advantage of the mana doubling effect while preventing the rest of the table from gaining the benefit.
  3. Sol Ring - It is in every EDH precon, and yet it is still $1.50, the Almighty Sol Ring!!
  4. Sword of Hearth and Home - Provides protection from White and Green, fetches land, and blinks one of our creatures. This sword was made for this deck.
  5. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx - We are playing a mono color deck. Our devotion to a single color will be quite high.
  6. Thought Vessel - After playing this deck a few times, it became apparent that having no maximum hand size was a necessity.
  7. Decanter of Endless Water - The newer version of Thought Vessel .

Interestingly, most of this deck is some form of interaction.

Boardwipe

  1. Mass Calcify - Yes, the CMC is a little steep. But it is a onesided board wipe.
  2. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite - Not a true board wipe, but it is close.
  3. Elesh Norn   - It is a board wipe if flipped. It is mainly here as flavor.

Exile Other's Toys

  1. Swords to Plowshares
  2. Path to Exile - You can always use it on one of your creatures if need be.
  3. Excise the Imperfect - Targeting a nonland permanent is nice... I am not sure how much I like the incubate X, though.
  4. Space Marine Devastator - With Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines and the squad mechanic, this basically turns into a board wipe for artifacts and enchantments.
  5. Dawnbringer Cleric - It is nice to have options.
  6. Skyclave Apparition
  7. Fiend Hunter

Protection

  1. Teferi's Protection
  2. Mother of Runes
  3. Swiftfoot Boots
  4. Sejiri Shelter
  5. Lae'zel's Acrobatics
  6. Semester's End
  7. Eerie Interlude

Make People Cry

When constructing this deck, I did not realize how backbreaking these two cards can be.

  1. Stonehorn Dignitary - Repeatedly removing combat for two opponents is outright mean.
  2. Mage's Attendant - Who knew Mono-white could have an infinite supply of Spell Pierces

We need to force our creatures to work harder to make this deck shine. We need more than our creatures entering the battlefield once. With our package of blink spells, we will make sure those lazy creatures pull over time without pay.

Instant Blink

  1. Scrollshift - New addition from M.O.M as it also replaces itself.
  2. Justiciar's Portal - Provides ETB trigger as well as a neat little combat trick.
  3. Eldrazi Displacer - Nothing fancy here. Just a 3/3 body with the ability to instantly blink any creature... not just your own.
  4. Cloudshift - As basic as they come for blink spells.
  5. Ephemerate - its rebound mechanic makes me want to blink. Okay, I will see myself out.

ETB Blink

The next three creatures all do the same thing; on ETB, they blink another creature you control. Any two of these creatures paired together, and you have an infinite blink wheel going. Which plays into several combos/synergies. More on that later.

  1. Felidar Guardian - Can target any permanent you control. This means you can target a curse you have been given to return it to its owner.
  2. Icewind Stalwart
  3. Restoration Angel

Return at End of Turn

Some of these were mentioned earlier in the Interaction section of this Primer. That is because there are two options when using these spells: defensively to save your board from a board wipe or offensively to trigger a ton of ETB triggers at the end of an opponent's turn. That way, your creatures won't be summoning sick for your turn.

  1. Eerie Interlude
  2. Semester's End - free +1/+1 counter on all of our creatures? Yes, please!
  3. Lae'zel's Acrobatics - Rolling dice in a game of MTG is still odd. But, for this card, that oddness will be brushed aside.
  4. Charming Prince - He is okay..
  5. Conjurer's Closet - This is a MAY ability; you do not have to blink anything. But more than likely, you will want to blink something.
  6. Teleportation Circle - NOT A MAY ability. Just be aware of that when playing this card. Being forced to blink a creature with 50 +1/+1 counters on it is excruciating.
  7. Touch the Spirit Realm - Can be used as removal or channeled to be a blink spell.
  8. Mirror of Life Trapping - I originally overlooked this card when it came out. It didn't seem to have a purpose in life. Boy, I was wrong. This card is entertaining as it steals everyone's creatures and won't return them until another creature is played.

Welcome to the section where I lay out some of the synergies and combos of the deck. Hopefully, you read through the other sections before this one, as there will be a test. Most of the combos require either Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines or Panharmonicon on the battlefield to function correctly.

Infinite Life Gain

After finally getting a life, we can spend it on Aetherflux Reservoir to remove our opponents from the game.

  1. Icewind Stalwart + Felidar Guardian + Suture Priest or Soul Warden or Soul's Attendant
  2. Icewind Stalwart + Restoration Angel + Suture Priest or Soul Warden or Soul's Attendant
  3. Felidar Guardian + Restoration Angel + Suture Priest or Soul Warden or Soul's Attendant

The Dungeons are a Wincon??

Did you like the dungeon mechanic? Did you want to somehow win by venturing into the dungeon? Here is your chance to drag everyone through the dungeon where we all belong.

  1. Icewind Stalwart + Felidar Guardian + Radiant Solar
  2. Icewind Stalwart + Restoration Angel + Radiant Solar
  3. Felidar Guardian + Restoration Angel + Radiant Solar

The Token Zone

You want more creatures? The deck already has 35. Fine, you can have some more, but they won't be the real thing.

  1. Icewind Stalwart + Felidar Guardian + Preston, the Vanisher
  2. Icewind Stalwart + Restoration Angel + Preston, the Vanisher
  3. Felidar Guardian + Restoration Angel + Preston, the Vanisher
