-1 Cremate +1 Thoughtseize -2 Dragon Mantle +2 Read the Bones -1 Minotaur Aggressor +1 Stormbreath Dragon
Thinking of replacing Read the Bones with toil/trouble but not sure if it's worth losing the scry

Played this deck at fnm. Out of the 4 matches I won 2 lost 1 and drew 1. I'm truly in love with this deck it's so great! It can be real quick and when it's not quick it's controlling. 1st match: Junk deck with thoughtseizes, obzedat's and desecration demons. I went 2-1 against this deck mainly cos of master of waves :D 2nd match: Esper Control with ashiok as a mill engine and elspeth and aetherling as the finishers. I drew against this deck but only because the allotated time was up :( Otherwise the 3rd game could've gone either way. But it's not my best match-up. 3rd match: Golgari deck with deathrite, loleth troll, witchstalker and vraska. This is the match I lost 1-2. But the deck didn't go down willingly. 1st game I won by sealing off his vraska and deathrite with my pithing needles. 2nd game I lost cos I was mana-screwed. And 3rd game I lost fair and square. All in all I wasn't dissapointed with the performance. 4th match: Mono-red. I dominated this deck! Tidebinder Mage was the all-star in this matchup tapping down a boros reckoner, ash zealot and chandra's phoenix. The wall of frosts helped out a great deal as well as did the owls btw. This was probably my best match-up of that night Conclusion: I probably need 1 more master of waves for consistency and see if I can get my hands on a couple of jace, archtect of thoughts and replacing the 2 memory adepts. Well that's about it I guess.
Some Changes

I have decided to play with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver with a different mentality. I am going to try using her for the control matchup even though my first thoughts were that she would be quite strong in the creature matchups. I am going to mainboard two Thoughtseize instead. I'm still scared of Red Deck Wins though. I think Ashiok is still good in the Red Deck Wins matchup.

finally got time to update the deck. I am not sure how i feel about the deck anymore, its fun but it just cant find answers for other creature because spot removal is limited to fighting for green. Also I dropped some lands and creatures for other lands and creatures, also added some more support in the enchantment area and artifact areas
FNM
Strawlies, 11 years ago
Playing in paper is more slow (and sometimes more frustrating) than online, so my playing on FNM made me realize two things: 1) We don't have an awful matchup against GR beatdown, and 2) Mana could be smoother. I want to make the deck more aggro, and I will do this by speeding up the mana base and leaning it towards green: -2 Mutavault -1 Golgari Guildgate +3 Forest Also, Desecration Demon may have reach, but he is the weakest four-drop. I would prefer to run Boon Satyr, now the we run more green he's a great turn two-three play, and he can also make attacks possible turn four/five. -2 Desecration Demon +2 Boon Satyr This is it for a starter,

Played a few round or so and discovered that towards the middle of the match, I was running out of cards and my hand was dwindling badly. Need to find a card that will allow me to keep drawing one or more times.

This was my first time playing Esper and I was a little bit nervous about playing the control mirror because I'm used to playing Azorius and did not really know how the control mirror would go in game 1 with only 3 counterspells to play with.
First Round vs Grixis Control: Win 2 - 0
My first round was vs a Grixis player who normally play Azorius control. He was running Steam Augury and Master of Cruelties and of course cards like Dreadbore and Rakdos's Return. His main replacement for Sphinx's Revelation was Opportunity. I won the first game pretty handily after he missed a few land drops. He couldn't keep up and I managed to resolve an Elspeth, Sun's Champion. He eventually scooped.
Second game he sided in Slaughter Games and used to it target Sphinx's Revelation on turn 7. I responded with a Sphinx's Revelation for 3. He managed to resolve a Sire Of Insanity which he also sideboarded in. This made the game very interesting. Luckily the turn before that I got a Blood Baron of Vizkopa on the field. He discarded his hand and then realized he could have bounced my Baron with Far / Away before I discarded. Unfortunate misplay :3 but good for me! Ended up taking the game after he was unable to draw any answers to my Baron.
Second Round vs Esper Control: 1 - 1 Draw
Of course my second round would also be vs a control player and of course it would be a mirror this time.
First game I had to mulligan to five and was on the draw. We played lands for a very long time until I inevitably started missing land drops due to my lesser starting hand. He ended up slowly grinding out the game with an eventual resolved AEtherling.
Second game I did not have to mulligan to five. He started missing land drops around turn 5. In desperation he tried to resolve a Jace, Architect of Thought which I happily answered with Gainsay. This resulted in me resolving my own Jace, Architect of Thought and an uphill battle for my opponent. He did eventually deal with the Jace and then I began to miss land drops. He ended up using shock lands and Thoughtseize enough times to get him down to 14 life if I recall correctly. I kept two Supreme Verdict in for dealing with Blood Baron of Vizkopa. My opponent did not make the same choice. I resolved a Blood Baron of Vizkopa and started punching him. After a few Sphinx's Revelation on both sides, the board was cluttered with many Elspeth tokens on his side of the field and an AEtherling while my side had a measly Blood Baron of Vizkopa. I was at 25 life and he was at 7. I had just killed his Elspeth, Sun's Champion. In my hand I held a Jace, Memory Adept and a Sphinx's Revelation. I knew my opponent had one Negate in his hand. I attempt to resolve Jace, Memory Adept which was quickly met with Negate. Then I went for a Sphinx's Revelation for 5 which resolved due to my opponent wasting his counterspell on Jace. This put me at 30 life and buffed up my Blood Baron of Vizkopa for the flying vampire victory!
Third game went to time with both of us having no board state and no hands. I had resolved a Jace, Memory Adept on our last turn which he Hero's Downfall'd immediately.
We decided to roll for the win because draws suck. He won the roll and promised to give me a pack if he went 4 - 0
Third Round vs Awkward Dimir Master of Waves with Clone: Win 2 - 0
He began the game by only playing basic Islands so I assumed it was mono blue devotion. I was of course wrong. He played an Omenspeaker and then played a Master of Waves for two tokens. I quickly ruined Master of Waves
with a Doom Blade. He played an Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and looked for my AEtherling but could not found it. I Detention Sphere'd the Ashiok and resolved a Blood Baron of Vizkopa. He responded with Claustrophobia onto my Blood Baron. He later played two Clones targeting my Blood Baron after seeing me pick up a Supreme Verdict from Jace, Architect of Thought. I wrath'd the board and finished him off with Elspeth, Sun's Champion.
Game two I sideboarded in 1 Negate, 4 Gainsay], and 1 Jace, Memory Adept. My starting hand was 2 Gainsay, 1 Negate, 1 Dissolve, and 3 lands. He turn one Thoughtseize'd me and saw the horror that was my hand. He took a Gainsay. I drew multiple removal spells which he Duress'd and Thoughtseize'd out of my hand multiple times, but he just could not play anything because of all of my counterspells. He did not actually attempt to play anything until it was too late because he knew what was in my hand. I ended up just milling him out with Jace, Memory Adept after running him out of counterspells for the easy 2 - 0 victory.
Fourth Round vs Golgari Midrange: Loss 0 - 2
I had seen this player play Esper before, so I was prepared for the control mirror. I was so wrong though. He turn one Thoughtseize's me to see a hand of 5 lands, Dissolve, and Syncopate. He took the Dissolve. I then proceeded to draw 6 lands in a row and quickly was beat down by a turn two Lolteth, Troll.
Game two I had a much better hand. I sided in Lifebane Zombie, my two Thoughtseizes, and [Dark Betrayal. Perhaps I should side in Pithing Needle for Lolteth, Troll and a few other things. I played a turn 3 Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. I exiled a land and two Desecration Demons! Awesome.... He responded with a turn 3 Hero's Downfall onto my Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. The game played out with him resolving an Underworld Connections after using Thoughtseize and Duress to get rid of my counterspells. He even used Lifebane Zombie to see my hand one more time. I discarded his Reaper of the Wilds with my own Lifebane Zombie which he was pretty sad about. I was unable to draw into any Jace, Architect of Thoughts or Sphinx's Revelations in a relatively long game. Even my opponent asked where they were. His underworld connections eventually drew him into another Desecration Demon which he beat me down with until I died. I managed to get a Blood Baron of Vizkopa down on the field but it was not enough to keep me alive for long enough to draw into Sphinx's Revelation.
Overall I didn't feel too bad about the event even though I ended up not winning any prizes. I learned a lot and have decided to make some changes to the deck and how I play it. Luckily for me, the Esper player that I played in round two ended up going 4 - 0 and gave me a pack as promised. I opened a Purphoros, God of the Forge and a foil Xenagos, the Reveler! That made the tournament really worth it haha.

Swapped 4x pack rats for 4x Lotleth Troll Dropped 4x Sylvan Caryatid for 1x Desecration Demon, 2x Pack Rats and an extra Putrefy. The ramp was useless and the caryatids did nothing but slow me down.
Small Change
Arcangel266, 11 years ago
As said on comments, removed Gauntlet of Power as the ability also affects opponents and this has not always worked as one may think, looks great on paper, on practice it does not. Planning on Sideboard is working slowly, currently 2 cards on it: Gauntlet of Power Extraplanar Lens Considering playing Sword of Body and Mind also on slideboard. Thanks everyone for your support, specially Arcanum, AvatarDante and again sjsilver for his positive comments, and useful suggestions.
Counter Play
AndyReveler, 11 years ago
An Interesting little combo, Kalonian Hydra doubles his own counters for sure, and Experiment One if there's one that sticks around long enough, BUT, It also plays well with Fleecemane Lion if it has become monstrous and Witchstalker if an opponent has played any black or blue spells, and with a lot of blue or black devotion, esper and junk decks in my area, his chances of getting those counters is pretty decent. All in all for a deck not centered around counters, it's a fun little side combo that comes out every now and then, even if it doesn't do much, its more things for the opponent to worry about.

Not an update, but I'm thinking of taking out Shadow Alley Denizen in exchange for more mill-friendly freatures, as well as subbing in a few Rogue's Passage to get damage through faster.

Going to go to the SCG standard tomorrow, if anyone has any other suggestions they would be appreciated. in the TGC tournament went 4/3 42nd place.

Side boarded some mill protection creatures and some hexproof for decks that seem a bit harder to handle. So far the deck is doing great. thinking about adding Sphinx's Revelation we shall see. It would kill any budget this deck had lol
stopthehumens, 11 years ago
Changed the quite ridiculous Magus/Portal combo into Soul Conduit. Also, this allows more consistent play in Multiplayer. That's really the only major change.
TheGodslayer, 11 years ago
Added Gideon, Champion of Justice x1,Lazav, Dimir Mastermind x1,Sphinx's Revelation x3 & Doom Blade x3 to the main deck. My worse match up as expected has been red aggro. Also thinking hard on changing Azorius Charms to Dimir Charms, the permanent kill looks to be more helpful in the early game while im waiting for a cleaner.

-1 Gaze of Granite +1 Golgari Charm
total of 3 gaze is to much dues to the cost it needs to activate.(yes vs tokens it wouldnt matter but Ratchet Bomb would be a better pick if i expected tokens)
Golgari Charm is supposed to help me kill manadorks miggettokens ala Assemble the Legion(or the chant itself) and make reaper of the wild survive Elspeth, Sun's Champion her -3

Doing a booster draft with some friends tomorrow, and after that I plan to update this deck with some cards (I hopefully will get what I need)
