Sideboard

This here is a Dark Petition based Vintage Storm deck designed for the metagame post restriction of Lodestone Golem.

Since the workshop menace is way less present in numbers and that most deck's matchup vs mishra's got a whole lot better, different metagaming and sideboarding dynamics are in order.

I have built this list with these following ideas in mind:

  • Gush decks make between 35 to 45% of the field and have taken to running Hatebears like Aegis of the Gods or Ethersworn Canonist in their sideboard to cause use problems.

  • Disruptive creature based decks like White Trash and 5c Humans are starting to put up numbers and results recently. And their strategy naturally splash hates on Storm decks in Bear form and from a multitude of different axis.

  • Graveyard hate is no longer the only thing to be concerned with, a lot of players are coming prepared for Storm and spell decks in general by including various enchantments most often in the sideboard. Cards like Mystic Remora, Arcane Laboratory or even Leyline of Sanctity have become quite common depending on the archetype.

  • Recent developments in the metagame have caused a pseudo fusion of the two biggest ennemies of Storm combo : White Eldrazi which combines disruptive hatebears (Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Vryn Wingmare, Aegis of the Gods and Ethersworn Canonist) with artifact disruption ( Thorn of Amethyst, Chalice of the Void and Trinisphere) backed by Fast and disruptive Eldrazis (Thought-Knot Seer andReality Smasher. Cards like Stony Silence/Null Rod or Rest in Peace can also be encountered in certain builds. The deck can be hard to deal with for storm due to it using different types of permanents as sphere effects so it can be hard to answer them all at once to clear a path for victory.

My maindeck is pretty close to most conventional Dark petition lists you can find except for a few minor differences:

-1 Land

-1 Protection spell

-1 Time Walk

+1 Cabal Ritual

+1 Tinker

+1 Memory Jar

  • I want to make sure that my deck isn't overly reliant on the graveyard with Dark Petition and Yawgmoth's Will to facilitate post board games against Rest in Peace so I added Memory Jar and Tinker for more threats that evade it( I also like boarding out a petition to blank their hate as much as possible). With the 3rd cabal ritual instead of the 13rth land to maximize Dark petition in the early and late game.

  • Tinker enables you to shave a protection spell like duress since you have more threats and Tinker can function as a protection spell by getting Defense Grid. This also allows me to run a tinker bot in the sideboard as a plan b in creature + hate matchups like Eldrazis, Humans/Hatebears and Workshops. I have chosen Sphinx of the Steel Wind over Blightsteel Colossus because it is typically impossible to loose against these decks once the sphinx is out where The colossus almost always takes two hits to kill as long as your opponent has at least 2 toughness of blockers and can loose you the game against multipler attackers at low life and you typically are at low life total when you manage to string your tinker together. On the other hand it is extremely hard to attack with lethal through a sphinx since it negates 8+ points of damage the turn you play it and as soon as it gets to attack it's pretty much over for those decks.

The Maindeck is optimized for Counterspell/combo matchups and vulnerable to Permanent based hate, which is why the sideboard is designed to answer all the different types of hate you might encounter.
