It's less about how risky it is in general and more about your personal meta. Some players play slow games, where a 4-player pod can last 3+ hours for a single game. Other groups will sit down and be done with their first game by turn 4, after just 30 minutes or less.

If your group plays long, slow games then it really doesn't matter at all. If your group plays fast games, it's less about basics and more about lands that don't enter the battlefield tapped. Or, having ways to untap them.

Generally speaking, lands that enter tapped are worse because you have tied up resources for a whole turn. Kenrith wants to use mana, so having it available the turn it enters is preferable. This would make Triomes actually a serious setback in that regard.

However, you can work around this with fetch lands. Pay the life to crack it on an end step so it untaps your turn. Although this does mean you do go your previous then without it.

I would recommend looking up ways to untap your lands, or make your lands produce more mana. For example,

With tutors, those should be plenty. Four different permanent types also means it is significantly harder for your opponents to fully stop you as they would need, collectively, multiple removal spells that hit each type of permanent.

I love this Ape tribal deck!

My only criticism is that you don't have enough human fodder for Kogla, the Titan Ape since he's one of your main forms of removal in your deck. You've only got Eternal Witness.

I was thinking maybe you could replace your Llanowar Tribe with Karametra's Acolyte or Citanul Hierophants ? Not only do they offer the potential for much more green mana per tap than the Tribe, they also are humans for Kogla to toss back.

Elfhame Druid could be replaced with Somberwald Sage which would actually net you 1 more mana for casting Kogla and 2 more mana all the time for other creatures.

You could also replace Sakura-Tribe Elder with Diligent Farmhand . While not as good as a one-off as the Elder it does fill the same chump block and sac for a land niche, it counts as an extra pump for the jank pump spell Muscle Burst which is mega flavor, and is a human for Kogla to toss. There's also Krosan Wayfarer which has the downside of only getting a land from hand rather than tutor or Primal Druid which has to die from the combat but at least lets you tutor.

I know you are probably using Llanowar Elves for an early play and ramp, but if you didn't need that extra (G) per tap you could replace it with Drumhunter which gives you needed card draw, a colorless mana per tap, and is a human for Kogla to toss. Some less good options but still ok since they're lower CMC than Drumhunter is Werebear , Honored Hierarch , Harvester Druid , Sylvok Explorer , or Humble Naturalist .

If you need a ramp creature to combo off with look no further than Hope Tender , Juniper Order Druid , Ley Druid , or Krosan Restorer to untap a land that produces big mana or Hidden Herbalists which would actually combo off of Kogla's tossback if you have something that could benefit from ETB's.

There's also Setessan Petitioner which would allow you repeated lifegain on ETB if you needed it.

These are the incoming changes guys. Expect a fully fleshed out primer implementing all of these. Also, the Moxfield primer is just going to be a redirect to the T/O primer. (Sorry guys, keeping up with multiple primers is a giant pain in the ass and I got ton on my plate atm).

Eventually I'll re-port the whole updated primer back to Moxfield.

Yeah, if you are running Fierce Empath , you do want most of your bombs to be at or above that 6 CMC threshold. For instance, that's why I run Greenwarden of Murasa over the usually far superior Eternal Witness and Cyclops of Eternal Fury over say Urabrask the Hidden or Fires of Yavimaya . Running both the Empath and Time of Need will require careful balancing so you don't end up in situations where you need to find one thing and the tutor you draw isn't the one that can search for it. Hypothetically, you can get around that by just running creatures that satisfy both conditions. It is true though that such creatures will often be quite pricey like the Eldrazi titans and Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger . If you do go the Eldrazi route, Artisan of Kozilek and It That Betrays would be some other guys to keep an eye out for, with one being obviously more budget than the other. As for the appropriate numbers of land untappers and land enchantments, you'll just have to goldfish and hopefully also get some real games in to test what ratio works for you. If there is a lot of enchantment destruction being played early, for example, I think running 12 Overgrowth effects would be more worthwhile. Or if creature removal is more of an issue, working in Hope Tender or Sculptor of Winter could be an option.

Yoshness: It's 100% not. Magus Requires that the Land produce 3 mana. That means Gaea's Cradle or Priest of Titania need to produce 3 mana and Nykthos needs 5 devotion for Magus to go off with Ashaya and that's pretty much it. We don't have any sources that produce anymore. If you include Satyr, you have the Cradle. If you include the Elder, that goes infinite with Ashaya by itself. Outside of the combo it requires Cradle, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, or Ancient Tomb in the interim to be used as ramp.

Hope Tender on the other hand requires that the land just taps for two to go infinite with Ashaya, which is something we can definitely work with in the form of:

  • Joraga Treespeaker
  • Priest of Titania
  • Gaea's Cradle
  • Nykthos (4 devotion)
  • Utopia Sprawl
  • Wild Growth
  • Ancient Tomb (Near Infinite Colorless that can be filtered)

Outside of Ashaya it still goes off with traditional Temur/Kogla lines and a Cradle land. To add to its utility, it always goes positive, as we can always exert it early on for mana as we don't care about it unless we intend to win.

However, having to explain this in a comment falls on me for making changes before rolling out the update explaining these changes.

CyborgAeon: Yedora, Grave Gardener is unfortunately too costly for a value/protection spell, especially when most of the hate I encounter is targeted and 5 mana for some synergy isn't really feasible.

As for Ecological Appreciation , it's really a worse Tooth and Nail and the opponents picking the piles makes assembling viable ones that much harder.

Just a heads up for those on the thread, you can stay up to date with the on-goings of the list, like the above-mentioned cards on the discord!

I did have Hope Tender in here at one point, and I ended up removing it FOR Majestic Myriarch lol. I like having out a large creature to scare people away from attacking me, and with the River Hoopoe out, I can hit once or twice with a flying Majestic Myriarch before dropping a Walking Ballista for the win. That said, I will definitely try the deck out with a more "all-in" strategy with the mana ramp and searching for the ballista. With that in mind, I do like what you're proposing!

The only thing I'm not sure of is the Oracle's Vault's ability to trigger Paradox Engine. It specifies that you play it without paying costs, so I believe that won't count for casting to trigger the engine. The rulings on Gatherer talk about casting, so I may absolutely be wrong.

I would consider replacing Majestic Myriarch and Nissa, Genesis Mage with 4 Hope Tender, which will also untap your Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun (leaving you with 1 spare slot).

Oketra's Monument would then become Oracle's Vault, which can create a loop with Paradox Engine to look at the top card of your library and cast it without paying it's mana cost. Each card cast will untap all your non-lands and reboot your tap/untap cycle.

Nissa, Steward of Elements is a side-board must, but I would drop a Negate to play 2 Nissa, Vital Force (using the spare card slot). If you can get the emblem of Nissa, Vital Force, you could get a number of added card draws.

I might move River Hoopoe to the side-board to play a mana-dork like Naga Vitalist for more consistent mana, earlier in the game.
