Mesmeric Orb

Artifact

Whenever a permanent becomes untapped, that permanent's controller mills a card (They put the top card of their library into their graveyard.)

Don't be a coward, play Mesmeric Orb.

king-saproling I've actually tested Street Wraith and Gitaxian Probe and wasn't really a fan. These cards don't really give me confidence if a starting hand is keepable or not. With my luck, they turn into the worst card I could cantrip into and end up bricking my hand haha.

If I can find more room for ramp Farseek would be the first include. Dark Ritual is close too, but I think Sacrifice would be a better fit as a ritual for this deck. For Unmarked Grave and Persist, there just aren't enough good non-legendary 7 drops (bummer, I know). And I just straight up can't afford Intuition.

But all that said, Dance of the Dead seems like a fantastic include. I don't know how I missed this one before but this is exactly the type of card this deck needs.

And I was skeptical about Mesmeric Orb since unlike all the other selfmill effects in the deck, it doesn't help find lands. But the sheer volume of cards it mills might outweigh the downside of not replacing itself with a land. I'm definitely gonna test this one out.

Thanks for the ideas!

Wow, not sure how I managed to misread Nexus of Fate like that smh, thank you for that correction haha. That's what I get for trying to Magic while sleepy.

Now that I'm rested, let's try to suggest things again...fingers crossed lol.

A really great one that comes to mind is Evacuation. Continuously wiping the board of creatures AND giving you a way to consistently recast Chun-Li for more value is super good. Curfew would be another great way to do this if you're trying to keep the curve low. Filter Out seems like a great way for this deck to consistently control the board very heavily, too. Since this is essentially a graveyard deck, Mesmeric Orb, Windfall, Brain Freeze & Tolarian Winds are all worth considering for sure. Chain of Vapor is ridiculous here too, considering the sheer multi-utility with the Commander imho.

Being dependent on Combat, I'd say Reconnaissance is potentially an auto-include. Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar pulls weight here too, with it's baby cousin Cunning Evasion slotting in for 1 less mana if that matters.

Sorry if I goofed again with these further suggestions!

OK here we go lol

Creature cuts: Archon of Sun's Grace, Composer of Spring, Courser of Kruphix, Doomwake Giant, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Nessian Wanderer, Nyx Weaver

Artifact cuts: Mesmeric Orb, Whip of Erebos

Enchantment cuts: Battle for Bretagard, Boon of the Spirit Realm, Cast Out, Exploration, Familiar Ground

Sorcery cuts: Extinguish All Hope, Kodama's Reach, Rampant Growth, Skyshroud Claim

Instant cuts: None! Add things like Veil of Summer & Silence, though

I'd recommend that you replace all of those lands ramp spells that cost more than 2 with more mana rocks instead! Your guild signets (Selesnya Signet, Orzhov Signet & Golgari Signet) & talismans (Talisman of Hierarchy, Talisman of Resilience & Talisman of Unity) are all better options since this isn't a Landfall deck.

Great suggestions Mr_Tobiah, thank you! All 3 of those cards have me spinning my wheels and I'm thinking on adding all 3...

  • Mesmeric Orb - I like that this card pulls double duty in getting Mimeo targets in my graveyard + seriously milling everyone else as they untap their lands etc. This will really punish the go wide token strats in my playgroup, heh.
  • Syr Konrad, the Grim - I was kind of iffy on this guy, but the 1 dmg to each opponent factor is pretty spicy, especially when paired with some of the splashier group mill cards (e.g. Maddening Cacophony or Mind Grind). Not a bad mana sink either.
  • Sepulchral Primordial - I think you're right! The ETB factor pairs well with my mill strat & the instant boon vs Sheoldred's slower grind makes a lot of sense here, good call.

PSA is generally considered the best in the business. That said, there are plenty of other options - you can find a bunch of articles with a quick Google search comparing and reviewing each. That is probably a better way to decide which to use than just asking folks on a forum.

Just doing a quick look, it appears a serialised Mesmeric Orb is only about $300.00. Pricey, yes, but hardly the most expensive card in the world. You’ll want to decide if the price for having it graded is really worth it to you - that could actually reduce your number of potential buyers, since they might not want to pay a premium for a graded card at this price point. If you intend to play the long game and wait a few years before selling, perhaps then having it graded (and put in a protective case) might be worth it to you.

I was looking at a deck to put Nazgul in, and I'm currently deciding between Ratadrabik of Urborg and Araumi of the Dead Tide; the former directly comboing with them, and the latter being a combo deck that is happy to play them, as encoring a Nazgul is a powerful play that can drastically swing life totals. The main decision factor between the two is a conundrum I've ran into before; Ratadrabik is overall a more consistent combo: besides the commander, you just need a creature that ring tempts on ETB or LTB, and a payoff. The problem with this deck is it is vulnerable to being run over by the infect and aggro decks at my LGS. The combos with Araumi are more complicated and limited in pieces (ex. Mesmeric Orb, an untapper to encore, and a bucket of mana), but can fight more easily on a value front with plays like Gray Merchant of Asphodel, as well as access to blue to fight other combos on the stack.

I can grasp deckbuilding for a combo deck in cEDH, but what should I keep in mind building a deck that has a combo win as plan A in a diverse, non-cEDH meta?
