Meren of Clan Nel Toth

Legendary Creature — Human Shaman

Whenever another creature you control dies, you get an experience counter. (Dying is being put into the graveyard from the battlefield. Tokens enter the graveyard before they cease to exist.)

At the beginning of your end step, choose target creature card in your graveyard. If that card's converted mana cost is less than or equal to the number of experience counters you have, return it to the battlefield. Otherwise, put it into your hand.

Cool! A few thoughts...

Ground Seal also stops you from targeting things in your graveyard... including stopping Meren of Clan Nel Toth. Not sure this is going to help if someone has a Scavenging Ooze. Without an sorcery like Bitter Ordeal (which can be amazing) I think you're better off trying to stay ahead of your opponents and get those creatures on to the battlefield ASAP rather than worrying too much about graveyard protection.

If you use even fewer basic lands, Hermit Druid could be even better. With Sidisi, Brood Tyrant out that would be amazing.

Since your theme is self-mill, I also really like The Master, Transcendentfoil which is in your Sideboard.

Could think about replacing Seal of Primordium with Reclamation Sage to have another creature to trigger and get back from the graveyard.

I also wonder if you could use a few more ways to give your stuff trample besides just Brawn. There is Garruk's Uprising which also helps with card draw. Surrak and Goreclaw would give creatures trample and haste which might be helpful.

Your ability to stop fliers is pretty low. Wonder would be an easy add here.

And for another wincon that avoids sorceries, you could look at Bringer of the Last Gift as a creature version of Living Death.

DemonDragonJ on Ideas for an Ayli, Eternal …

At some point, I would like to build a black/white EDH deck with Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim as the general, so I certainly would like to ask the other members of this forum for any suggestions for such a deck.

The main theme of this deck would be sacrificing creatures for various benefits, so I naturally shall include plenty of sacrifice outlets, such as Ayli herself, Denethor, Ruling Steward, Commissar Severina Raine, Hidden Stockpile, and so forth; then, I would include cards that provide benefits from creatures dying, such as Life Insurance, Feast of the Victorious Dead, Proper Burial, Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim, or Butcher of Malakir; finally, the deck shall also contain methods to generate tokens for sacrificing or reanimating creatures that I have already sacrificed, such as Malevolent Awakening, Bitterblossom, Black Market Connections, Sister Hospitaller, Sun Titan, and Grave Titan.

It is likely that this deck shall have some overlap with my Meren of Clan Nel Toth EDH deck, but I would like to avoid those two decks being too similar to each other, so I certainly am eager to hear your suggestions for an Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim Deck!

Hi there,

This looks fun but there's almost no additional mana sources in here, other than some of your artifacts. I would consider adding spells like Farseek, Nature's Lore and/or Three Visits to accelerate yourself a bit. Please also consider Sol Ring; it's more or less a staple in all EDH decks. Your ability to draw additional cards per turn is a bit limited too; maybe cards like Deathreap Ritual, Idol of Oblivion, Moldervine Reclamation and Phyrexian Arena can help you out there. These are all just the budget options; obviously there are more expensive choices one can make too.

Curse of Clinging Webs could be useful, automatic exile of any opposing creature that dies is useful against a number of opposing strategies, and the generation of spiders adds extra flavor to this deck. Maybe also consider Swarmyard; being able to regenerate your spiders is quite strong. Condering this is a golgari deck and you probably expect your spiders to die a lot, perhaps a card like Meren of Clan Nel Toth could be useful.

Hope the deck works for you.

DemonDragonJ on May I Choose to Return …

I have an EDH deck with Meren of Clan Nel Toth as its general, and, in one game, one of my opponents controlled a Grafdigger's Cage, which would have prevented Meren's ability from returning a creature from my graveyard directly to the battlefield, so I instead returned the creature to my hand, when here ability triggered (the creature's mana value was less than or equal to the number of experience counters that I had).

Was that a legal play? I sincerely hope that it was, because I would like the assurance that I can bypass attempts at hindering my deck's strategy.

DemonDragonJ on Mortality Spear or Drag to …

I have a copy of Mortality Spear in four different EDH decks of mine, but I am wondering if I should replace those copies with Drag to the Roots from Duskmourn.

I am confident that my Meren of Clan Nel Toth and Teneb, the Harvester decks have a sufficient focus on gaining life that I shall be able to reliably cast Mortality Spear for its reduced cost; The Mimeoplasm deck has no way to gain life outside of Ravenous Squirrel, but does actively encourage me to put cards into my own graveyard, so I should be able to reliably cast Drag to the Roots for its reduced cost, in that deck, so I shall replace Mortality Spear with it; the only deck about which I am uncertain is my Kresh the Bloodbraided deck, since that deck neither has sufficient ways to gain life nor actively encourages me to put cards into my own graveyard, so either card would be equally valid in this deck, in my mind.

What does everyone else say abut this? Should I keep Mortality Spear in my Kresh deck, or replace it with Drag to the Roots?

Mate! Thank You very much! You helped me a lot to get a clearer view on the options this deck gives. I run a pretty decent Meren of Clan Nel Toth golgari Deck but Chatterfang drives different. And i also don´t want to play the same "Staples" in both Decks. So your Advice helps me a lot. I try my Deck the Version it is now after some adjustments. Will give you feedback on how it worked, when i played it. Best Regards!

I think you should do something about your mana fixing, you have a reasonable 39 lands, but you don't have a great deal of mana fixing options (you do have Chromatic Lantern, but not The World Tree), in addition you don't run many land ramp spells (stuff like Nature's Lore or Untamed Wilds that can find lands are generally better than creatures that will die when people wipe the board to get rid of your Dragons, land ramp makes it easier to recover). In a deck with lots of Basics I like stuff like Kodama's Reach, Harrow, Roiling Regrowth, and Entish Restoration are all options that are really good at getting you to WUBRG (and Tiamat). I like Blighted Woodland, Myriad Landscape, and even Krosan Verge for fixing in a deck with lots of Basics, but note that Krosan Verge can fetch a non-Basic Forest and Plains, I like to find Murmuring Bosk and a typed Plains/Island or Plains/Mountain, so it can find 4 colours without a fancy/expensive Triome. If you run lots of Green land ramp spells you should probably not cut any Forests (even for duals that offer Green), I would cut non-Forest Basics instead since your deck will work better if it has access to Green mana. I have a Meren of Clan Nel Toth deck that REALLY needs to have at least one Green source very early or it's dead, that deck runs 19 Green lands, and even though the deck is mostly Black spells the deck only runs 11 Black lands; my Green sources can find my Black ones for me, so I don't actually need to draw any Swamps in a normal game to have plenty of Swamps. Hope this helps/makes sense, making a great mana base is really hard to do.

I think recasting Tiamat is probably a useful enough thing that Netherborn Altar might be handy, as would similar effects. You can also use Capsize or Unsummon to return Tiamat to hand so you can get her trigger again (to recover from a wipe).

If you're really into Dragons you might like Crux of Fate, this can clear out non-Dragons, probably letting you alpha strike. You can also try Mandate of Abaddon and target a Dragon that is big enough to kill all the relevant blockers, yet small enough to not kill your important Dragons.

Welcome to the club, Moonsteel!

Priest of Titania gives you massive amounts of green mana, which can lead into an equally massive Genesis Wave or similar effect. Since Meren of Clan Nel Toth wants creatures to die, and Elf decks are excellent at generating lots of creatures, look for some more sacrifice effects that let you control when and how creatures die.

Above all, have fun!
