Virulent Wound

Instant

Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature. When that creature is put into the graveyard from the battlefield this turn, its controller gets a poison counter.

Nice brew. I have my own -1/-1 counter deck here which might help inspire you. Some general thoughts:

  • I think you can get away with 23 lands, but in any case i really think you need some more 1-mana cards. I’ve found Ignoble Hierarch super valuable for getting the engine running quickly (as generally this archetype has a lot of clumsy 3-mana cards it needs to play, which slows it down).

  • I’m not convinced that Virulent Wound is worth running, as there’s so few useful targets it can hit, and a single -1/-1 counter for a card is pretty bad returns.

  • Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons is easily the best reason to be running a -1/-1 counter deck, imo you need to be running the playset.

  • a few Black Sun's Zenith could provide a LOT of value for you here. With Hapatra out you end up with snakes equal to the number of creatures in play. And with Nest you end up with that much multiplied by X. In both cases it’s usually a free win.

Some thoughts:

  • as has already been said, splashing white so you’re able to use the Dust spell from Grind / Dust would be useful.

  • Cabal Coffers isn’t even remotely playable unless you’re also running Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to make it into a swamp. Otherwise you need 4 lands in play just to break-even on mana (with it being useless before then). By the time this card offers mana benefits, you have enough lands that you don’t really need them.

  • Unearth feels like a weird choice here, as none of your creatures particularly need to be on the battlefield to progress your plan.

  • i’m worried some of these spells - particularly Virulent Wound and Contagion Clasp, are really inefficient even with your payoff-cards in play.

Some good infect cards: Contagion Clasp, Contagion Engine, Grafted Exoskeleton, Phyrexian Juggernaut, Blightwidow, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon (if you're not on a budget), Inkmoth Nexus, Corpse Cur, Core Prowler, Virulent Wound, and Crumbling Ashes.

If you'd like a common green wincon, that'd be Triumph of the Hordes. A more budget-friendly option is Predatory Focus.

I hope you have fun having no friends! ;]

Daedalus19876 Yeah I was wondering about that change. Yeah Virulent Wound is 1cmc vs 3cmc but you do get two more snakes and possibly two dead creatures your opponent's control out of it like dorks and such. So you can potentially +3 in value from killing two creatures and making two snakes.

OptimalGreen: As much as I appreciate your faith in my galaxy brain deckbuilding, sometimes I just made bad decisions XD I'm still figuring out if Virulent Wound deserves the slot over Splendid Agony ...

A few creatures you might want to consider:

And a few other spells:

OK, consider the following changes. Obviously you'll need to consider the budget you want to keep with this deck. I'm looking at options to bring up the kill speed for this deck. If you really want to hit hard and hit fast, then you need not worry about you own life total early in the game. I know what you're going for in this deck and I think you should look at this dekc from a different perspective. I'm not talking about play styles. I'm working with your aggressive beatdown style. I'm talking about shifting strategies in mid-game. In the early game you go all-out and hit as hard and fast as possible. Get the kill by turn 4 or 5. Once you've taken out the primary threat, you shift strategies. Change your approach and work on recovery and defense, shift to a midrange gameplay.

Ditch that crappy Putrefax. The "sacrifice at the end step" is too much of a hinderance for 5 mana. It it were cheaper, maybe, but nope it is just crap.
I really like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite but the mana cost is too high for the early game. Not sure on this one.
I also think you should reconsider keeping the Lost Leonin since he's cheap and hits the field early. He's also a great pump target.

Better infect creatures:
Contagious Nim
Cystbearer
Ichorclaw Myr
Mycosynth Fiend
Necropede
Phyrexian Digester
Relic Putrescence - screw your mana rock.
Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon
Whispering Specter

Pump for the kill:
Invigorate - Because we don't care what their life total is.
Tainted Strike - Surprise!
Snake Cult Initiation - 3 poison counters at once.
Glistening Oil
Giant Growth, Mutagenic Growth, Titanic Growth, Might of Old Krosa - The classic pump tactic.

Let's consider toolbox utility cards:
Azorius Guildmage - Because screw your activated ability. Counter a planeswalker ability and watch the looks on their face.
Simic Guildmage - Imagine moving the Rancor or Phyresis after blockers have been declared but before the damage phase.
Prowling Serpopard - Nope, I'm gonna get my creatures.
Melira, Sylvok Outcast - Make the game one-sided.
Lightning Greaves - An additional set of Swiftfoot Boots. Yeah, I know shroud means that you can't pump, but there are ways around that.
Unburial Rites - Here it comes again.
Virulent Wound - Poison and removal.
Pistus Strike - Poison and removal.

There are some -1/-1 counters decks based around Hapatra or Atraxa. Since the infect creatures deal combat damage as whither, we can use that to our advantage.
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons - Put those -1 counters on opponent's creatures to work making tokens.
Phyrexian Hydra - This gets just stupid with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons.

Lands you may have missed:
I know we've talked about this in the past, but I think you should really consider getting the shock lands. A quick check of the card prices on TCGPlayer puts the shocks at about @10-15 each. Totally worth it.
Gavony Township - Proliferate!
Vault of the Archangel - Need to stay in the game a bit longer.
Boseiju, Who Shelters All - Screw your counterspell.

I would suggest these revisions to the mainboard: +4 Phyrexian Crusader -4 Scar

-2 Swamp +2 Memorial to Folly

-4 Swamp +4 Inkmoth Nexus (I know this is a budget deck, but I believe this will receive a reprint soon, and while 1-2 copies is expensive, it won't break the wallet)

-2 Septic Rats +2 Ichorclaw Myr

-2 Blowfly Infestation +2 Nest of Scarabs

+1 Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon -1 Virulent Wound
