Raven Familiar

Creature — Bird

Echo {2}{U} (At the beginning of your upkeep, if this came under your control since the beginning of your last upkeep, sacrifice it unless you pay its echo cost.)

When Raven Familiar enters the battlefield, look at the top three cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

Raven Familiar Discussion

What are your thoughts on the new Brainstorm Merfolk from RIX?

I think it is worth testing in either Raven Familiar orSea Gate Oracle

Looks deadly. +1 from me

I can't believe the low land count; but animar does win with four or less land. I started along the Wild Cantor/Tinder Wall/Fyndhorn Elves weenie route and kept getting boardwiped after puking my hand onto the 'field. I needed a more midrange aggro to survive

Nowadays I see a bunch of countermagic. I like that you have a lot of those low-impact creatures that don't seem counter worthy but do add up. If you can get animar out and start the +1/+1 train you can win in one turn. Tolaria West I just added to find Cavern of Souls (or even Walking Ballista). Plus I'm considering running more counterspells myself

Do you feel like you've had success with Raven Familiar+Sea Gate Oracle? I like the idea of casting them as a one mana cantrip

Do you really have Timetwister and Imperial Recruiter on paper? If so I'm jelly. Land Grant I've never seen. Could be solid in Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder

I would consider including Dream Stalker and Man-o'-War. They either bounce themselves for extra animar +1/+1s or bounce other value creatures for more value. Food for thought.

Keep up the good work!

I had Aven Mimeomancer in the initial list because I thought it worked like a Song of the Dryads effect and made dudes into VANILLA birds, then when I figured out how the card actually worked I cut it without really considering whether the card ACTUALLY works with my deck. I should probably give it a shot.

I'm trying to keep my curve super-low, so once my cantripping enchantments come out I can machine-gun out birds, but Raven Familiar probably deserves a place even though three is a bit more than I want to spend on a non-game-winning bird.

Great suggestions, both! Thank you.

I'd consider Raven Familiar - yeah, it's a little costly with Echo considered, but its deck manipulation is very nice. Much better than, say, Owl Familiar's. Besides, with Seaside Haven and Soulcatchers' Aerie in there, sometimes you won't mind him dying right away.

Aven Mimeomancer might also be a nice addition. He can buff all of your little 1/1 birdies, bring an opponent's hulking dragon down to size, and even combos delightfully with Kangee.

Cards I think you could do better; Wood Elves, Sage of Fables, Raven Familiar...Where are all the cards you sent me? Even if this isn't a Cockatrice list, Vizier of the Menagerie needs to be in there

You are off to a good start for a sliver deck, but as an Animar deck it could be improved upon. Generally Animar runs about 60 creatures, almost every card possible is a creature to synergize with him. You can replace a bunch of the non creatures with creature cards that do similar things. For card draw, mana dorks, and removal use cards like Tower Geist, Regal Force, Raven Familiar, Somberwald Sage, Rattleclaw Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Man-o'-War, Flametongue Kavu, Duplicant, etc. I don't have an animar deck any more but it often went infinite with Ancestral Statue bouncing itself or kiki/twin + Pestermite or Cloudstone Curio + 2x eldrazi. Shrieking Drake can self bounce to pump animar. Morphs are great because face down they count as a 3 cmc colorless creature. What makes these decks tier one is mana dorks to help cast Animar turn 2, infinite combos, and the top notch creature tutor power possible in green. If you lean in that direction it might help you in your new more competitive playgroup. Happy gathering!

Ok, I've found what I would consider to be the 7 easiest cuts. I'll suggest more later that are possibles, but these shouldn't effect the deck much if removed, and while not bad, their replacements would definitely contribute more.

  • Faerie Impostor: Replace with Temur Sabertooth. It can't bounce itself. Cards like Shrieking Drake and his two counterparts can all be played and bounced for repeatedly to quickly amass counters on Animar. Then, if need be, they can be allowed to remain in the field to bounce something else. Faerie Impostor is one time use. 1 counter, bounce something else. Not horrible, but you have 3 other creatures that do this better, plus Ancestral Statue.

  • Alchemist's Apprentice: Replace with Paradoxical Outcome. Alchemist's Apprentice is a weak card. Enters giving 1 +1/+1 counter, assuming you wait until Animar, Sould of Elements is on the field before you cast him. Then, you must sacrifice him to draw a card. An ability not easily repeated in your deck. The creature is lost, so overall you bet minimal gain.

  • Wild Cantor: Replace with Hardened Scales or Evolutionary Escalation. It is only good in your opening hand. Yes, it can get Animar out a turn earlier, but it is a single use card whose 1 mana is virtually useless later in the game. Basically a dead draw unless it's your first draw. The suggested replacements don't get your commander out that extra turn sooner, but they drastically increase his growth rate, getting him bigger in fewer turns than he would be one turn early.

  • Sylvan Ranger. Weak card. Land to hand, not even ramp. 1 +1/+1 counter, possibly. Could easily be cut.

  • Raven Familiar: Weak draw card. You draw him, then play him to gain a +1/+1 counter and hope to draw something good. Why not just replace him with something good? (Deepglow Skate or Chord of Calling would work well here)

  • Fortune Thief: Replace with Walking Ballista. This is such a situational ability, and requires you to have this card, ideally face down waiting to flip, right before you lose. And still you're left with 1 life and a 0/1 creature being the only thing protecting you. At the point that he is useful, you are already fighting a losing game. And that is on the few games that he is useful, and the fewer times you have him ready to use. He will most likely be a dead card in hand. I suggest Walking Ballista as the substitute because it is solid removal, or an instant game win. Keeps the same "last ditch" spot, but for a last ditch win as opposed to a last ditch survival effort.

Ok, this one I'm iffy on.

  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. The reason he is in my cut suggestions is A, your Eldrazi are cast abilities, not etb, and B, his copies put no counters on Animar, Soul of Elements. He doesn't combo with anything, doesn't help your commander, doesn't do much with your big things, he's just there for the small etb triggers. Something more Animar focused, such as Increasing Savagery or the Deepglow Skate might do the deck better. That, or, I missed something in here.

Anyhow, these are my thoughts for now. I'll see what else I can come up with.
