Loyal Drake Discussion

Loyal Drake and several other creatures with Lieutenant are all worthy additions for EDH.

its alot, but the following cards i would consider to be your Voltron support. this would mean we are including A LOT of enchantments. I have found as much synergy as i could, but im sure its food for thought. Trophy Mage , Heliod's Pilgrim , Bruna, Light of Alabaster , Sram, Senior Edificer , Sovereigns of Lost Alara , Invocation of Saint Traft , Danitha Capashen, Paragon , Silverblade Paladin , Blackblade Reforged , Sword of the Animist , Swiftfoot Boots (for the haste), Ethereal Armor , Holy Mantle , Shielded by Faith , Daybreak Coronet , Mesa Enchantress (if you go heavier on enchantments), Trailblazer's Boots (OP OP in EDH),

There is that 3CMC blue creature that proliferates, but of course it only proliferates each time you cast a non-creature spell. And at 3CMC I guess it would be too slow to do much for Animar even if it triggered off creature spells.
A 1CMC 0/1 that proliferates when it enters the battlefield would be pretty nice to see printed in this set.
The fact that the new Vivien gives creature spells flash and digs into the deck on the turn it enters for just 3 mana is a sweet deal, but I think that in fast cEDH metas it's just that little bit too slow. However, assuming you take 1 turn to uptick her, she can dig you 6 cards deeper into your deck over the course of 3 turns and still stick around to let you play your combo and interactive creatures at instant speed. There's also something to be said for Animar being able to step outside its usual sorcery-speed play style. And if you are playing in a meta where the level of interaction tends to often slow things down, that extra digging power seems worthwhile. At the very least, I think that the card can potentially do more for the deck than, say, Loyal Drake . In the end though, I have a hard time justifying its inclusion in a baseline Animar list because playing it early will probably unnecessarily cost you 1 turn until you can combo off. I would need a strong meta reason to include it.

What are your thoughts regarding how you are no longer running Shrieking Drake in this build for Animar?
From my perspective, The drake isn't a strong card on its own but I have always found it a valuable option to have in Animar. In particular, it acts as a way to pump Animar without having to empty your hand and, since it returns itself to your hand, you can always keep it around as a way to refuel Animar in case it gets hit with removal. The drake's ability to act as a card draw engine with Beast Whisperer , even without Animar on the field, and the possibility it gives of getting double duty out of a card-draw or tutor creature are all things that I have found valuable in a number of different circumstances. Gearing the deck's mana base to provide consistent blue mana for Kiri also makes the drake that much more reliable for getting multiple casts in a turn early on.
I would be inclined to include Shrieking drake over cards like Loyal Drake , Siren Stormtamer , and probably even Crop Rotation but I'm interested in hearing about your experience with the card and how you weigh its value as an inclusion in Animar.

Whenever you have the time, I am interested in hearing your current perspective on some of the cards run in this build.
3) The re-inclusion of Slithermuse .
4) Gaea's Herald and the risk it poses of allowing opponents to get their own combo creatures past counterspells.
5) And the general level of risk that you think is involved in casting Weird Harvest .
I'm still of the opinion that Loyal Drake's card draw is rather slow. Wouldn't it be better to run Trinket Mage in that slot, since it can tutor for Skullclamp , Walking Ballista , or Lotus Petal to basically make itself a "free" spell that turn?

This is a fantastic deck for its cost. Really budget and I like that. There are a lot of upgrades you can make if you have the cash to spare.
Wheels: Teferi's Puzzle Box, Memory Jar (surprisingly cheap), Wheel of Fate, Wheel of Fortune (the most expensive option), Reforge the Soul, Winds of Change, Memory, Magus of the Jar, and Magus of the Wheel. You definitely shouldn't have all of these, just a few. Wheels are great regardless, but with your commander out, then you get a load of little bugs to go with the card advantage.
Bug buffs: Mindwrack Liege to make all the bugs bigger threats. Altar of the Brood is a good alternate wincon. Loyal Drake guarantees a locust each turn, in case everything goes wrong. Coat of Arms makes all the bugs massive.
Elixir of Immortality makes it harder to deck yourself.
Skullclamp to turn you bugs into more cards, and thus more bugs.
Gamble to grab combo pieces.
A Counterspell and Rewind are good spells to have. I noticed your initial decklist is a little light on removal, so a Blasphemous Act and a Vandalblast will be fine, along with any others you can think of.
This is a fantastic deck, these are just some upgrades I would suggest. I would also make your mana base a little better with some more dual lands and mana rocks, but usually those are the most expensive cards to grab.

Then I'd look at your auras, you probably don't need a ton to get a lot of value from your commander: Empyrial Storm, Phyrexian Rebirth, Angelic Chorus, Epic Proportions, Ground Seal, Myth Unbound, Octopus Umbra, Spawning Grounds, Vow of Flight.
