The Unlucky Miner (Custom Commander)

Commander: Rule 0 Burn Casual Landfall Lands Mono-Red

This deck is essentially a land-matters mono red deck using a custom commander (described below). We want to try and get as much land on the table as quickly as possible. I wanted to make a viable burn-like deck for commander and was always fascinated with the mechanic on Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle. Flavor-wise, the commander is a Dwarf miner that in supremely unlucky, ultimately attempting to mine in the Valakut Mountain range and in the process, accidentally sets off a dormant volcano. Testing has not been done yet, however, and the custom commander may have to be changed if it is too annoying. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please let me know!

The Commander (represented by Dwarven Blastminer as I thought it looked perfect for depicting a dwarf miner the moment before they are erupted into oblivion) is called Brandeldorff, The Unlucky Miner. It's a 1/1 Legendary Dwarf with Sacrifice (cardname): Put a Volcano counter on a mountain you control. Lands with Volcano counters have 'whenever a Mountain enters the battlefield under your control, if you control at least five other Mountains, you may have it deal 3 damage to any target.'

Edit 1- We found that being able to essentially get several Lightning Bolts a turn was very oppressive for opponet's creatures and plansewalkers. The commander is the same but Volcano counters now only do '3 damage to any player.' While this moves away from Valakut's ability, it simply needs to happen for the deck to be balanced and fun to play against.

Edit 2- While better, the Nerf was too hard; it made it extremely difficult to get damage going. To help with that, the Volcano counters now say "whenever a Mountain enters the battlefield under your control, if you control at least five Mountains, you may have it deal 3 damage to any player.' The idea here is that you can start getting damage off when you play your 5th land as the counters count the incoming land as part of the total. So far this seems to be a good balance.

I like the concept a lot. I guess your commanders name was composed like this on purpose? (If not: "Brand" is german for a fire that is burning something down, and "Dorf" is a village. This being accidentally seems highly unlikely, that's why I'm asking.).

It seems weird to not actually have a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle in here. Is it on purpose? Also, you could consider Torbran, Thane of Red Fell for increased damage.

Thank you for for the suggestions, seshiro_of_the_orochi. Actually, the naming was quite accidental. That is a very odd yet perfect coincidence! O_o

I would love to have a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle for this deck but, unfortunately, it is a little out of my price range right now. You are definitely right though, it would be a great addition since the deck is already set up to abuse triggers like it.

I thought about Torbran, Thane of Red Fell but since the mountains are colorless, I didn't think it would work. I suppose it would still boost other red damage sources though so it could help in some ways.

Dang, I cannot stop thinking about about how strange that naming connection is. Super wierd. Thank you, seshiro_of_the_orochi for seeing that; I never would have known!

You're welcome ;D That's a weird accident indeed.

Oooff, I didn't know Valakut is that expensive, I totally get it being out of budget. Regarding Torbran: You're totally right. I always tend to forget he only pushes red sources.
