Sideboard

Maybeboard

Hello everyone!

This deck started as me wanting to build a deck around what I think is one of the most unique cards in Magic, Liquimetal Coating .

Originally the deck was mono-green utilizing ETB artifact destruction creatures, Splinter , and elves like Steel Leaf Champion for board presence.

I then tried Gruul for Ancient Grudge , Destructive Revelry , and Lightning Bolt s. That was a huge improvement over mono-green, and I decided to keep trying splashing other colors.

Next came Temur and Bant that, while having lots of options, were really punishing on the landbase, and needed 4-6 more total lands than this deck does. Having to devote so many slots to land meant that I didn't have the necessary number of control spells to even have a chance of using Liquimetal Coating.

Scaling back from there, I went to Izzet because of the much better consistency, and finding a great wincon in Thing in the Ice  . Converting to a Blue Moon style manabase meant I could drop even more lands, have more control, and not care as much about getting hit with Path to Exile , Field of Ruin , or Assassin's Trophy .

This gets us to where the deck is today, which is still very early during the playtesting stages, so the deck changes frequently, sometimes significantly (especially the sideboard) as I experiment.

If you have any comments or criticisms, let me know!

Updates Add

With the release of Ravnica Allegiance I finally have a third creature that I feel fits the maindeck perfectly.

Pteramander

Landing an early chump blocker that turns into a serious threat as early as Turn 3, while playing into what I am already trying to do with Thing in the Ice  Flip really rounded out the deficiencies I felt the deck had. Made a few modifications to lower the CMC a bit more, as well as changed the Mainboard to focus less on being able to answer every threat, and more on letting the deck do what it does best, and save the specific answers for Game 2.

Playtesting has gone extremely well, and the deck just plays so much more smoothly overall. Getting Faithless Looting back in has also made drawing portions of the Liquimetal package when I don't want them easier to play around. Really happy with this latest revision. I don't have Tarns yet, so the landbase will be suboptimal for a while (might have to run more Steam Vents to compensate), but I'm very excited to take the deck to FNM again.
