Description

Varolz the Cash-Strapped

Hi there! Welcome to my hyper-budget EDH deck built around Varolz, the Scar-Striped

It was designed to be an incredibly budget conscious EDH deck along with other cheap generals with the end goal of giving them to new players at the table.

Design Goals/Philosophy- Every card in the deck should be close to or be less than 30 cents. (.30$) The only exception is the general, who should be roughly <1$(though cheaper is better). I use TCGplayer prices for this(NM/LP, whatever edition is cheapest). The goal is to be in a sub 15$ range for the entire deck, not counting any lands. (NOTE: Some cards on tappedout show higher prices from being recently in standard rotation-their tcgplayer prices should correctly be below .30$)

The cards should be relatively easy to understand and play. I find that the Commander decks are too complicated for players new to the game, but EDH is a format that is great for new players since it has a longer, casual shelf-life. These decks are meant to rectify that.

The decks should be somewhat competitive. Each should be strong enough to sit at a multiplayer table and have a chance to win.

Suggestions, comments, and upvotes are loved! Please be mindful with suggestions on card costs( $ )

I just saw this one. Varolz, the Scar-Striped is an interesting looking commander. I had not seen this card until now. I kind of like the theme here. Some recursion, but cards going to the graveyard to make Varolz bigger and voltron, eh?

Pretty much. I opted to focus on useful, low-mana creature drops that had effects like Fleshbag Marauder and Filigree Familiar. This way it's easy to farm them into Varolz counters that can go and beat face. Things like Undertaker or Malevolent Awakening let you swap cards and creatures for ones you'd rather have to play again, and Ravaging Riftwurm's downside isn't a downside when you can slap its power on to varolz for GG1.

Death's Presence tends to be broken with this guy and should fit within your budget.

I used to run this guy a couple years back, good times :)

Got distracted on other projects and my meta shifted heavily, so had to change focus.

looks like a fun cheap brew

Bababad thanks for the suggestion! Last time I checked it had been a bit higher, but from what I can see it's perfectly in budget. Adding it now!

Uktabi Drake is possibly better than Elvish Ranger.

also, Putrefy is better than Murder.

Love the deck <3 I'm in love with budget ideas

Some suggestions for you:

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord($.74) to throw beefed up dudes at everyone.

Silhana Ledgewalker($.49is one of the best creatures for Varolz to scavenge onto.

Thought Gorger($.20) is awesome to scavenge onto since you get a ton ood cards when he dies.

Siege Behemoth($1.05) wins games.

Sone of these may be slightly over the budget.

Thank you for the suggestions Squirrel_of_War! I've had my eye on Lupine Prototype, but until it slips out of standard later in the year it's still too expensive money-wise(there's one for sale for .28 on tcg, but the normal sales are still around .33$), but I'll continue to eyeball it . Otherwise most of the others are too expensive sadly :(

I will give Thought Gorger a test-run next time I have a chance to playtest since it fits price-wise!

Thanks WhatIsThisFor!

Don't forget about Splinterfright though! It puts things in the yard, it has trample if you want to scavenge onto it and most importantly it has the potential of putting up to 45 +1/+1 counters on a creature if scavenged late game. :) Also thanks for the upvotes on my decks! When you can, check out my Varolz deck.

Squirrel_of_War I didn't! Unfortunately it's just a bit too high in price :((it bases out around .35$) I'll definitely give your deck a check out :D

That's actually one of the reasons I run Boneyard Wurm, it's the cheaper variant :p

and Riftsweeper for some recursion

Rogue Elephant is good budget scavenge as well. It can put itself in the graveyard too.

Force of Savagery and Groundbreaker make for good budget options.

The none budget cards you would want to get for this guy are Death's Shadow, Phyrexian Dreadnought, and Hunted Horror.

Snacrifice says... #23

CaptSillva Unfortunately while good cards, both of them are too expensive for the budget restrictions in the deck(every card <0.30$).

I am definitely going to build a non-budget version of this, thanks to the posts here. Good stuff everyone!

Ok, I have a question, probably a dumb one. How are you guys using Splinterfright and Boneyard Wurm? I'd assume by filling the yard up with critters, but if you remove them from the game to scavenge, then you reduce their power/toughness, which seems counterproductive. Does the card read their power/toughness while in the graveyard? If so then that makes sense to scavenge them, but I didn't think the cards with / on them meant anything unless they were in play.

If I'm wrong, please clue me in. Thanks guys.

September 19, 2017 1:35 a.m.

Snacrifice says... #26

Those two cards set their power/toughness based on what's in the graveyard, even when the cards are in the graveyards themselves- so you scavenge them first, and they = whatever is in the yard.

As per the rulings on Boneyard Wurm:

The ability that defines Boneyard Wurms power and toughness works in all zones, not just the battlefield. If Boneyard Wurm is in your graveyard, it will count itself.

bushido_man96 says... #27

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you for clarifying that, Snacrifice. I'll be sure to add them to my list.
