A swap —Dec. 16, 2016

I decided to take out Rise of the Dark Realms for Erebos, God of the Dead for the time being. I do not actually remember the last time I cast RotDR, or the times I did if it really mattered. I'm swapping this for Erebos because he can act as a blocker, gives me more draw (just in case) and stops pesky life gain.

Would you mind sharing the backstory of that alter? Why does it annoy your friends? I apologize if it is somewhere else in the comments and I missed it.

I figured out how to make decent quality proxies, I set out to find images and found that little gem. Now when I cast Nekusar, my friends are forced to stare at Skeletor as he brutally murders them through draw. That's why lol

You've got a lot of overlap with my own Nekusar deck: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-04-16-nekusar-the-mindrazer-edh/

The best suggestion I can make is Psychosis Crawler for all the windfall draws. It is a must-kill creature when I'm playing Nekusar.

I would take out Rakdos Signet for it since you've got 7 mana rocks and your mana requirements are mostly blue.

(also, I'm not eligible this round for MagicalHacker's EDH Forum thread game, so don't pick me, but I wanted to contribute to your deck anyways)

Bloodchief Ascension and Archmage Ascension seem like a must include. Phyresis, and Grafted Exoskeleton go great with your commander. Basilisk Collar on your commander or on Psychosis Crawler like Deruvid has mentioned prior. Is a great way to gain some life. as you will receive hate from the table you will need to gain life.

Cards I don't like are Blessing of Leeches because regeneration is weak in commander. It's hardly worth destroying especially since it hurts you. Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir as great of a card this is it just doesn't fit in the deck style and type. Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker another card that's great but it will not be protected. You lack defence to keep it for more then one removal. Liliana Vess for that same reason using its ability to make someone discard is not worth 5cmc and to search for a card and put it on top of your library is not worth 5cmc asumming that she gets killed after one go around. Meekstone seems like good protection but it hurts two of your really good creatures. As an artifact It's also easy to removal. You only have 5 wizards so Sigil Tracer seems less effective but I could be wrong since the card draw is so strong. Leyline of the Void could get cut unless grave hate is a must. You could sideboard it instead. Lastly one of the signets could get cut

That's 8 cads I don't like. Giving you many choices to make changes.

Well this deck looks pretty solid! However, there are some crazy good synergies I don't see here yet:

  • Helm of the Ghastlord is extremely brutal on Nekusar, as it makes everyone discard a card each time they draw, meaning that draw steps no longer net opponent's cards and wheels cause opponents to have zero cards in hand. All that's fine and dandy, but it also has Curiosity on it, so get ready to have a lot of cards in your hand.

  • Elder Mastery is like that, but even better. Now, draw steps make opponents have two less cards than when before, and a Temple Bell can be used to make sure they can't cast their last card I hand if you know it's something scary.

  • Forced Fruition is sometimes considered a funny card, but being dealt 7 per spell you cast doesn't make anyone laugh.

  • Mikokoro, Center of the Sea is simply fantastic for any Nekusar deck, as it can be used in a variety of ways for your benefit! Not only can it deal damage through the deck, it can be used to increase cards in hands for wheels that care about the number of cards discarded, it can give you options in a pinch, and it can replace Temple Bell in the Mind Over Matter combo if you have something like Curiosity or Consecrated Sphinx out. All on a land? What's not to like?!

  • Darksteel Plate provides protection for key creatures in a way that stacks with Swiftfoot Boots and also lets them stick around after a typical board wipe.

  • AEtherspouts is a fantastic board wipe, as it is instant speed and doesn't care about indestructible or graveyard synergies. Yes, it only hits one opponent, but it can also be used to ward off attacks when opponents know you have it in hand. Oh and it doesn't care about your stuff, so that's a huge plus.

As for cards to take out, wanting to put stuff on your commander doesn't really synergize with shroud, so Lightning Greaves and Whispersilk Cloak could be cut. Blessing of Leeches was already mentioned, and effects that prevent regeneration are pretty prevalent, so I don't know if it's worth paying a life for each turn. I don't see what advantage the artifact lands provide, and they are a huge risk with artifact removal such as Vandalblast and Bane of Progress flying around. I'd take out all three (Crumbling Necropolis and Steam Vents seem like decent additional cards for the deck). Whelming Wave and Devastation Tide are nice with wheels, but they don't protect your stuff and they're at sorcery speed and they're pretty high cost for all that (when you're drawing two cards a turn, there is a 50% chance that you won't get to miracle the Tide). I'm sure these changes would provide more power to the Skeletor Jesus xD

Hoh my! That's a lot of suggestions XD! I'll slowly be responding to these today one by one. So first up: Deruvid!

I had Psychosis Crawler in a very early version of the deck when it was really just Grixis with a mad skeleton as the commander. I haven't even look at the poor card in over a year, so it's still lying around somewhere. I am interested in its value, I just always worried about the hate it draws. This deck has become the target of everyone's ire in my group. I will playtest it next chance I get and see if it functions well! Hmm, I do see your point there with my mana rocks. Here's a question then:

Of all of my mana rocks, the two I still do not own are Thran Dynamo and Coalition Relic. Do you think either of those would be a better option to swap for, or still work towards them and just trade the signet anyways?

You know adding some late game bombs wouldn't be a bad idea. If I were you I'd find room for these 3 cards. Rite of Replication, Rise of the Dark Realms, and Insurrection.

I'd recommend cutting Blessing of Leeches for Sangromancer. You have enough cards to protect Nekusar, and the life gain from Sangromancer would probably be extremely strong in a deck like this.

griffstick:

  • I've had A LOT of issues with Bloodchief Ascension and Archmage Ascension in previous versions. Don't get me wrong, they are great and powerful with this deck, but every time I play them my group will not stop targeting me until I am dead, regardless of how little a threat I am once it's removed.

  • Blessing of Leeches I agree with you on. I got that during a wave of cards meant to solely protect Nekusar from spot removal. That card came about to get around board wipes. Basilisk Collar is quite nice actually, and would even combo with Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind for deathtouch!

  • Liliana Vess is in there because I had her for my Ghosts of War deck which capitalizes on her much better. She could honestly be replaced by something better. Nicol Bolas will have to stay against my better judgement because he was a card my girlfriend bought for me alongside a lot of other cards for my birthday last year. Out of love for her and her generosity I can't.

  • Meekstone and Leyline of the Void should honestly be in my sideboard at all times at this point. There isn't much grave interaction besides my other deck, but I keep Meekstone because my group has a Marath deck, Animar, and Ruric Thar, which are all piloted by different people. That card has ended up winning games. If I were to find myself in a different meta however, I should find a better card to take its spot most of the time.

  • Sigil Tracer does a surprising amount of work for me. Because Nekusar, the Mindrazer is a wizard, it's rare that I don't have two wizards to tap, and the few times I haven't had two has been worth getting off double Windfall for sure lol.

  • This last suggestion is something I like the idea of a lot. I designed the deck to be low mana and very combo oriented, trying to set up by turn four and hopefully have the game by turn 7. A late game punch is not something I've had the luxury of but perhaps it's time I considered one. In particular I like the though of Rise of the Dark Realms since I have one in my black deck already. Insurrection is another, but I'd have to acquire the card. I'm less keen on Rite of Replication because I don't have too many creatures and I can't hope my opponents have something worthy.

Thank you very much griffstick, this has certainly given me A LOT to think about. I'll be on later to reply more to others!

Crap I missed two of your suggestions. As a personal preference I choose not to use infect in any deck. I find it unfun for a lot of people. I fully realize its potential, but I think my group wouldn't stand for it too long. Also, it's far more fun to make my friend with 85 life scoop because of Sigil of Sleep on Nekusar rather than get around his absurd life total with poison.

April 29, 2016 2:15 p.m.

griffstick says... #11

When I saw it was Nekusar I immediately thought of Sigil of Sleep, on him the card is obsurd!

Rite of Replication is great cause even the worst kind of creatures turn out to be great choices. Like ones that grab lands. Or ones with flying or deathtouch or one with etb like Acidic Slime or Reclamation Sage... something to consider.

MagicalHacker:

  • I was always very worried when it came to expensive enchantments like that, especially on a creature that causes groans when I even bring the deck out. I learned a lot about Nekusar by looking over decks such as Blizzicane's HandOverflowException, which is an amazing deck, and advocates staying away from those. But to be fair I've never actually tried to play test them. I think I could go for Helm of the Ghastlord, it's low enough in cost and one wheel is all that is needed to force no hands. Elder Mastery feels a tad slow for me and it would hurt quite a bit if it was removed.

  • Forced Fruition was something I did find funny as a concept and liked a lot, but based on what I learned from those kinds of decks, that is providing A LOT of cannon fodder for people to hurt you with, and its draw that they can benefit from more than it hurts them given the right situation. If Nekusar is removed and that is left up, suddenly I've become a mill deck, which isn't bad, but means people have twice the cards to have just the right answer. Worst yet, since it's only when I cast spells, they get to sit on those cards till it's their turn.

  • Mikokoro, Center of the Sea is a really good land that I should have in here. It will probably be awhile till I get it because of cost and other cards on my priority list, but that will just be subbed in because it is infinitely better than some of the other lands I have in here.

  • Well I'm just an idiot!!! How could I have ever forgotten about Darksteel Plate?! Granted it's a bit but still that is the exact card I would need! Unfortunately there is some artifact exile, but its few and far between. All of my yes for this. Also, I'm imagining Skeletor wearing this, it's a pretty great image.

  • AEtherspouts would be strictly better than Devastation Tide and that will be my immediate swap for those too.

  • Now for the removals! Blessing of Leeches will be removed for something, that much I know, as will Devastation Tide. I do see your point with shroud and It has gotten to be an issue from time to time, so I think I will remove the Whispersilk Cloak and keep Lightning Greaves. The haste on the greaves helps a whole lot when I have some of my other creatures out. The artifact lands were mainly just there to help with Molten Psyche and if I EVER somehow got a Mox Opal, and thankfully my group HATES (and I mean like "hate you as a human being') land destruction, even if it's an artifact land. They'll pop the occasional non-basic because it's affecting other players or it's too good, but other than that they refuse to touch it. Heck, the won't even kill Sol Ring. It also synergizes well with Trinket Mage if I have literally no other good artifacts to grab (which happens given wheeling a lot). And funily enough, despite the amount of green in my group, artifact removal is quite scarce. BUUUUUUUUUT. If I got a hold of Steam Vents (the other two lands were presents from a friend for my birthday this year and last year) it would replace an artifact land most certainly

You guys are giving me a workout with these suggestions!! Thank you all so much!

Lol wait I'm dumb again. Misread Forced Fruition, so scratch my last statement. That is something I would probably include as a end game win-con, but I'd need to give it more thought since it can still benefit opponents without necessarily hurting them every time

Quote010:

  • I had a Sangromancer long ago, and ended up cutting it when I decided to go with minimum creatures. It is a good card in the deck, but I was just never sure. I do agree that I need life gain in general to deal with some fast decks, and that Blessing of Leeches needs to come out. I just don't know if it is the right card to do so.

Okay! So I know its been awhile since all of the comments came through, but I think I've finally determined what changes I want to make to the deck to see how it works out. It may be some time before I get to see how the changes function now that I'm hoe and I don't have my college playgroup, but I will try to test it as best as I can!

Please let me know what you think of these changes, it they are good ideas of if they are bad or if there is a better ccard to take out or put in!!!

Look into Hive Mind if this is a multiplayer deck. Casting a Time Reversal and getting 6 total castings of it typically results in an on-the-spot win, lol. It's a fair deal stronger with full draw 7s, which is why I also recommend Wheel of Fortune and Wheel of Fate.

June 3, 2016 6:32 a.m.

Podma101 says... #18

PookandPie hm! Hive Mind could be a game ending combo piece for the deck! My issue with the other two is the former is super expensive, and the latter is not controllable. There are times that having a wheel go off like that could be less than ideal for not being able to set up. Also, when people see that they'll flip out and kill me. I will try out Hive Mind, and when I'm rich I'll get Wheel of Fortune!
