GREETINGS!

This deck is my interpretation of the Hammertime archetype featuring Colossus Hammer, Puresteel Paladin, and Stoneforge Mystic. My goal is to make this deck as fast and competitive as possible.

OVERVIEW

Win-Cons

Colossus Hammer is my primary win-con and I run numerous draw/tutor cards to ensure that I obtain a Hammer during turns 1-3, including Esper Sentinel, Silent Clearing, Steelshaper's Gift, Stoneforge Mystic, and Urza's Saga.

Kor Outfitter, Puresteel Paladin, and Sigarda's Aid allow me to equip a creature for no cost.

Once I have a Hammer on the board, my next goal is to obtain the Shadowspear to give my attacking creature lifelink and trample. Once both the Hammer and Spear are attached to a creature, it’s practically game over for my opponent.

Gingerbrute is thematically weird yet very effective at penetrating the opponent’s defenses. Once activated, Inkmoth Nexus can eliminate an opponent via infect.

Kaldra Compleat and Nettlecyst are my back-up win-cons if my Hammers and Spear are removed or if my creatures are wiped. If I want to lead with Kaldra instead, I can use Mystic to drop Kaldra on turn 3. Kaldra usually draws immediate hate, then I follow up with Hammer and Spear.

Protection

Giver of Runes and Blacksmith's Skill are critical protection for my Hammers and Hammer-Bearers. This deck has very little potential for interaction with the opponent, so Giver and Skill provide me with the defensive capability I need to survive today’s meta of powerful removal like Prismatic Ending.

Mana

Springleaf Drum is tutorable via Urza’s Saga and allows me to use a creature as a source of mana of any color. I can use the Drum to tap a creature the turn I play the Drum, and even if the creature is suffering from summoning sickness.

Urza's Saga is ridiculously powerful. Not only is it a land that generates mana, but it also eventually tutors for a Hammer or Spear and gives me the option of creating up to 2 Construct tokens which increase in power as my artifact collection grows.

Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire is another new addition, doubling as a removal spell and land.

UPDATE POST-LURRUS BAN

I used to run Lurrus of the Dream-Den, but unfortunately Lurrus got the ban hammer! I used to be limited to 2-cost or lower artifacts, but I now run Kaldra Compleat and Nettlecyst and ignore my own graveyard.

SIDEBOARD

Dispatch is an alternative to Path to Exile (ramps the opponent too fast) and On Thin Ice (too slow as an enchantment). Metalcraft is easy to trigger with this deck since I’m running 18 artifacts, tutors, Urza's Saga, etc.

Drannith Magistrate neutralizes cascade, escape, flashback, etc.

Leyline of Sanctity puts a damper on burn decks, which can outrace this deck without backup.

March of Otherworldly Light is efficient exile tech for artifacts, creatures, and enchantments. Running Mono-White maximizes its effectiveness.

Pithing Needle covers any missing bases and is tutorable via Urza’s Saga.

Relic of Progenitus is graveyard-hate tutorable via Urza’s Saga.

Sanctifier en-Vec is both graveyard-hate and anti-burn tech.

EXCLUSIONS

Paradise Mantle is tutorable with Steelshaper's Gift, but is slower than Springleaf Drum since Mantle needs to be attached to a creature, and that creature cannot be tapped the turn it enters play due to summoning sickness (unless it has haste, and I’m not running any haste creatures or enablers).

Sword of Fire and Ice and the other swords are good, but ultimately they are too slow in this build.

WHY MONO-WHITE?

I choose to run Mono-White over Azorius (sacrificing Spell Pierce and Lavinia, Azorius Renegade) and Orzhov (sacrificing Thoughtseize and Dark Confidant) to maintain consistency (relevant with March of Otherworldly Light) and reduce life-loss via Fetchlands (important against burn).
