Dream Devourer

Creature — Demon Cleric

Each nonland card in your hand without foretell has foretell. Its foretell cost is equal to its mana cost reduced by . (During your turn, you may pay and exile them from your hand face down. Cast them on a later turn for their foretell cost.)

Whenever you foretell a card, this gets +2/+0 until end of turn.

I'm not sure what format this is intended for so I'm sorry if any of my suggestions aren't legal. Most decks aiming for big demons opt for reanimation over other turbo out options, but I think you can make it work for a casual deck. I like Quicksilver Amulet for instance and I think you could also consider Heartless Summoning, Ancient Cellarspawn, or Crypt Ghastfoil. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx makes Coffers slightly worse but I can't imagine it being a bad inclusion with so many black pips. Another option would be to include more demons in the low mana range so that you have some board presence early. Some that came to mind are Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire for tutoring, Master of the Feast if you want to lean into a Underworld Dreams/Orcish Bowmasters plan, Desecration Demon for stats and potential board denial, and Nightmare Shepherd for removal insulation. Really though, if you want more consistency, the best thing you can do is add more copies of your best cards. This does incentivize picking a clear direction and you don't want to consolidate too much here lest you get too low on unique names for Contract. If I was building this, I think I'd go to 4 copies of Spawn of Mayhem and 2-4 The Speed Demon with a focus on dealing damage or life loss to get their relevant triggers. Changeling Outcast is perfect for this so I'd up them too. Removal like Smallpox or the safer Geth's Verdict can incur life loss, and I do recommend upgrading from Sorin's Thirst and Cremate anyway. Fatal Push, Dismember, and Feed the Swarm are all options with varying strengths and weaknesses. That's just one direction too. You could just as easily build around foretell with Dream Devourer and some symmetry-breaking Damnations, Rite of Consumption effects with overstatted guys like Abyssal Persecutor, or pure devotion with Gray Merchant and Bloodletter alongside tools like The Meathook Massacre or Leyline of the Void. If you pick the handful of demons you enjoy playing the most and run more copies, you'll have more games actually playing with them and can save your tutors for emergencies more often.

Have you considered Font of Agonies? This will give you a way to benefit from paying life beyond just casting spells.

With so many spells with Graveyard interaction your strategy is vulnerable to graveyard hate. Can't do much about Bojuka Bog or Calamity's Wake, but Leyline of the Void and Rest in Peace can be taken out with Revoke Existence.

Also, I would recommend Taborax, Hope's Demise. With all the Clerics you are looking to sacrifice this could just as easily fill your hand and get you enough +1/+1 counters to allow the Lifelink to recover the lifeloss. In fact, I would recommend steadily replacing your non-Demon creatures with other Demons. This includes, but is not limited to, Blade of the Oni, Dream Devourer and Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire.

One other card you may want to consider is Mirror Entity. Not only will it count as a Demon for Liliana's Contract, but if someone hits your Shadowborn Apostles with a damage or -1/-1 boardwipe it's activated ability can save it.

I hope this helps, thank you for reading me out. Happy Hunting.

Looks great! Adding Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire would be highly recommended. An additional nice win-condition in this deck can be provided by Liliana's Contract (though I know some playgroups that would frown on using cards like these). A card that's really a lot of fun to use is Dream Devourer. It doesn't just cheapen the cost of your demon (or any other) spells, it essentially keeps your demons in an untouchable zone until you need them. The other ideas I have increase the required budget for this deck rather substantially, but let me know in case you're still interested.

I like what you're doing here!

Since he's riding a unicycle and throwing fireballs around maybe Mayhem Devil?

It won't help you get your Commander out, but Dream Devourer is a pretty nifty Demon, and it can help out as a back up Commander by letting you bank some mana for big effects. You could also take a look at stuff like Golden Guardian  Flip, which is a weird card that has pretty good synergy with your Commander. You might also try Burnished Hart type stuff, it's nowhere near as busted as Guardian would be, but if you pay 3 to ramp out 2 lands you're able to recast your Commander.

If you want another big creature for your list, have you considered Kothophed, Soul Hoarder? It's not a great fit if people are all on sacrifice strategies, but it's a pretty impressive draw engine that's also a Demon.

While I'm not the only person who likes Allure of the Unknown (there are several of us!), it's the kind of card that deserves an asterisk, because while it's won me more than a few games, it does straight up cost you one sometimes. I like to offer the free card to someone who's behind, in some pods it can be possible to get them to not use the freebie vs you, but it's at it's worst when the game is 1v1. Drawing 5 cards for 5 mana is a very strong effect in my experience, and making a short term alliance can be it's own upside. It's up to you obviously, but I've been very happy with it in a deck that's a fairly strong 6, the only times I don't want to cast it are when I'm already ahead and don't want to give someone a free wipe (my deck uses a lot of wipes), it often generates decent advantage in practice.

I was going to suggest some Morph cards, but I looked and the only one really worth mentioning is Gift of Doom, which I think is a real gem. The two demons with Morph are some of the worst Morph cards I've ever seen, at least Gift is playable. The big feature to Gift is that using a Morph doesn't follow the same rules as other cards, meaning even if you can't activate a spell or ability you can still hold up Gift and attach it to something by sacrificing a creature.

With your relatively high MV I wonder if Protection Racket would help? It's a source of life loss if people don't want you to have free cards, and it happens during your upkeep, so you can play stuff during your main phase, to take advantage of Haste.

Housegheist glad you like the deck and thank you for taking the time to comment.

  1. I ran Divine Visitation when I first made the deck, I rarely attack and when I play this deck and opt to kill through aristocrat combos. So I ended up only using it to combo with Requiem Angel and a sac outlet, and eventually dropped it altogether.

  2. Nim Deathmantle I added in last year and has been amazing.

  3. Dream Devourer is in my maybe list and I've just been too lazy to get a copy to test out, but it will be tested eventually.

  4. Martyr's Bond has been great. I find the 6cmc worth it because it affects all nonland permanents. So my opponents have to lose their important enchantments/artifacts to destroy my combo pieces and since this deck has pretty good treasure generation, I can keep my opponents mana rocks off the field most games.

And I will absolutely take a look at your deck sometime today.

Nice take on Teysa. I like her ability a lot and she's one of my favouritve cards of all!

It seems like you're creating a lot of tokens... What about Divine Visitation? Nim Deathmantle can be used as a phenomenal recursion pice (and can go infinite with Elenda, the Dusk Rose. Dream Devourer showed hinself as a wonderful ramp-piece which also protects your cards from discarding or similar effects.

Which experiences do you have with Martyr's Bond? It seems pretty slow with that high cmc. Does it perform well?

My first eve deck is a take on Teysa too. Maybe you wanna have a look:

Your average CMC is a bit high compared to the deck's ramping/rock/dork capabilities. When you play-test it, this becomes apparent quickly. On average it takes five turns or so before you can really make a useful demon-summon. Some ideas on cheap-to-cast additions:

If there are decks in your meta that aren't good at blocking, then Rite of the Raging Storm is very scary. It is also a constant source of tokens that are never coming your way. Another Enchantment that can provide lots of bodies is Elemental Mastery, Mastery can make a small army of tokens that are both very good sac fodder and decent chump blockers if you're desperate.

I'm not sure if it's too awkward to make work, but Haakon, Stromgald Scourge is a decent recursion piece, allowing you to recast knights from the graveyard (including Haakon). All in all probably not as good as Gravecrawler, but better than many recursion options since there are many 1 mana Knights/Changelings. Another interesting recursion option that might work in here is Hell's Caretaker, this can turn a chump into the best creature in your graveyard on your upkeeps.

Any reason you're not running Pitiless Plunderer? It has pretty good synergy with your Commander, but also with stuff like Mayhem Devil (and maybe something like Marionette Master, which also works with any artifact creatures). Pawn of Ulamog and Sifter of Skulls both work with any recursive creatures to help generate mana. Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder is a really weird token generator that synergizes well with Gravecrawler or Haakon, providing you an extra body for each cast, helping them go infinite.

It's pretty janky, but Lagomos, Hand of Hatred is a neat repeatable tutor that also makes a token each turn. Another janky card that might do some work in here is Mask of Griselbrand, the buffs can be useful, but the card draw is the real perk, very good in a deck with lots of sacrifice outlets as a weirder Skullclamp. Dream Devourer is a surprisingly good jank 'ramp' source in Black, this also can protect your cards from discard effects by clearing your hand (and still letting you cast the stuff later).
