Undefeated

This Deck has become the deck to beat at the local modern. I went undefeated in every game/round finishing the night with a record of:
2-0: Cookie cutter Hexproof. The sacrifice ability of this deck sweeps the floor with hexproof builds.
2-0: R/B Burn/aggro creatures. Although this tends to be a close match up especially when it runs Vexing Devil, i can still lock down a game. One round came down to a top deck turn in which my opponent drew a Spark Elemental when i had an Ensnaring Bridge in play and no cards in hand. I was at 2 life. My opponent also had a Seismic Assault on the battlefield. A creature was the ONLY thing that would let me avoid a defeat. Lucky as usual.
2-0: B/W unblockable exalted. Ensnaring Bridge is worth the 25 bucks. The deck ran no answers and only one on the SB.
2-0: White Tokens/ soul sisters. This deck was hard to play around because of the amount of creatures it generated, additionally i had to play heavy sideboard to survive the second game. Sided in: Drown in Sorrow x1, Damnation x1, Bile Blight x1 and Torpor Orb x2. The second game looked bleak as i was quickly dropped to 3 life by a massive amount of tokens generated by 3 Spectral Processions back to back which, by the way, has a CMC of 6 while in hand and therefore is not a legal target for Inquisition of Kozilek. A Thoughtseize was used on another creature T1 and I fizzled the Inquisition of Kozilek on T2. -_- HOWEVER. I came away with a victory when I locked the game down with Torpor Orb and Ensnaring Bridge followed by a Drown in Sorrow off the top. My opponent stated after that game that he hates me but hates the deck more. I took it as a compliment.

Round 1 Naya Monsters 2-0: This, I think, is the weakest version you can play. Sure you get some decent white creatures but they don't really add that much. I'm really afraid of the match-up because with all of the planeswalkers you have to trade 1-1 but mutavault, oddly, is an all-star in this match. Round 2 R/B Devotion 2-1: This match is odd. They don't run the specter (that I saw in 3 games at least) and they board out the rat games 2 and 3 which is great because you can board out the 4 verdicts for the demons. Remember this is still a mono-black build with access to Rakdos's Return so play it the same as Mono-Black but you can bring in ALL of your creatures in this match. Round 3 U/W Devotion 0-2: If Thassa lives you lose...what more can I say? You've got the removal for all of the creatures but Thassa living kills you eventually. Round 4 Black Devotion splash Blue 1-2: This deck can pack negate post board...that's what I lost to game 2. Also watch out for Far/Away, that can wreck this deck bad if you play more then 1 creature at a time. I thought I had game three...then I lost.
Further Testing

I have noticed that when you get all your cards, it's unstoppable vs most threats. Much like the name suggests it will lock you out fairly quickly, and just wait for you to expire.
That being said, getting all the cards you need is proving to be a challenge. Pain Seer without the Whip is fatal, but without it you can lose by not having what you need. So the debate about Whip vs Bident is settled.
Another question I had is Triton Fortune Hunter vs Agent of the Fates. The Triton has the benefit of adding a lot of card draw potential, but you do lose creature control. I was considering offsetting the loss by adding Devour Flesh, or some other kill spell.

Thanks for everyone's help! This deck has been performing well enough that I am calling it finished for now. I will, of course, take into consideration any really solid suggestions, but only very minor tweaks will be made at this point. Taking this deck to FNM tonight. Wish me luck!New Cards

Lowered the number of enchantments to allow for Boros Charm

Cut Wheel of Fortune for Eladamri's Call. Having another way to grab Seedborn Muse or any other creature is pretty essential. It might be a mistake to cut Wheel, but since the deck is so low on draw cards anyway, I figure having one is like having none in most cases anyway.

Ok so I have taken Hero's Downfall out of my deck. In my area people don't really have and planes-walkers and so I have no need of the kill planes-walkers immediately. In replacement I have put Ultimate Price to kill my opponents creatures. In a addition I am wanting to play another form of scry land and so ... what color shall I splash?? ... I feel its white because the B/W god is about passage to the afterlife and that's what I am interested fluff wise.

2-2 at FNM
chark25, 11 years ago
I went 2-2 at FNM after struggling to draw my bombs. I wasn't running the full list (I haven't got my hands on the Abrupt Decay), but I realized that this deck MUST draw into stuff. If I can't stop aggro, I'm done. I have tried running Underworld Connections as a 3-of, but the mana was awkward, and I think Read the Bones is just better in this deck.
I struggled against MBD and Boros Burn deck.

Land count reduction
Pr37z31, 11 years ago
So I've been pretty busy with school lately and have not gotten around to updating this deck the way I want to. I finally worked on it some more today, with one of the main updates being removing two lands from the deck; specifically Selesnya Guildgate. Hopefully the deck will do fine without them, but if not then I will put them back in and take out basics instead. The two lands were replaced with two Gods Willing from the sideboard, and they were replaced in the sideboard with two Celestial Flare. I also decided to remove Ready / Willing in the sideboard and replace them with mortal's reslove, as I only really need one creature alive. This card also triggers heroic, while the other did not. Please, as always, feel free to add your own input!

Discovered a GREAT combo that produces a win con in a game with ANY NUMBER OF PLAYERS! I didn't even consciously plan this but:
Turn 1: land
Turn 2/3/4: Two drops, Mindcrank, Duskmantle Guildmage
Turn 5: Consuming Aberration
Turn 6: Activate Duskmantle Guildmage's first ability, then play some cheap spell. EVERY opponent goes into infinite mill/life loss cycle and dies. Playing a spell activates Consuming Aberration's ability, causing all opponents to mill until they hit a land. Then the Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank combo kicks in for everyone and they all die.
Freaking insane...
Suggestions!
IraFenix, 11 years ago
After playtesting this build, I feel like I can do without Loyal Pegasus. I've made the necessary changes below:
-2 Loyal Pegasus --> +1 Soldier of the Pantheon +1 Akroan Skyguard
This will hopefully add to the consistency of both of these cards.
More suggestions have been heard! I just have to run to class now, so I'll be working those in later. Thanks for the support!

After the last time I played this deck I wasn't thrilled with Stormbreath Dragon, yes he's a bomb. But he doesn't quite fit the deck and frankly he dies a lot. Originally I was thinking of replacing him with Haunted Plate Mail. Given that 1. it dodges sorcery based removal, 2. it's good against control, 3. it survives the removal of the creature it equips, and 4. it makes Ash Zealot and Fiendslayer Paladin beasts (gaining 6 life per turn with a first strike hard to remove creature will really help you stabilize when you are behind), which also provides another way Boros Charm can win (through double strike). Plus I always wanted to see Boros Reckoner in a suit. However, after thinking about it I think there may be better choices.
Another great combo not discussed above is Gorgon's Head with Boros Reckoner: once equiped you can flash in Izzet Staticaster, ping the reckoner and kill anything on the battlefield that staticater can't hit himself. Alternatively, use Chandra, Pyromaster +1 to hit yourself and your own Boros Reckoner, who in turn ping's and kills anything on the battlefield. The idea of pinging off of Boros Reckoner has made me rethink about Magma Jet over Lightning Strike. Originally my thought was: Lightning Strike synergies better with my 2/2 first strikers in being able to kill that 5 toughness blocker, is better for Chandra, Pyromaster ultimate, and gives me that last point of damage needed to kill my opponent. But, with Magma Jet, I can T4 equip Boros Reckoner with Gorgon's Head, tag him with Magma Jet to then redirect and kill anything on the board. I've decided to make that change and to increase the chances that I can pull it off.
Changes:
-4 Lightning Strike, +4 Magma Jet, +1 Izzet Staticaster, +1 Chandra, Pyromaster, -2 Haunted Plate Mail.
How this will affect the sideboard remains to be determined.

FNM Results: 3-1
SkitZaY, 11 years ago
First FNM went at moderate success, coming out at 3-1. Brief overview of games below, for those interested, and some comments
Round 1 vs. Red Aggro (Sligh) 0 -2
Using lots of one drops paired with removal, it managed to outpace me both times. Unfortunately my draws weren't ideal, and versing the aggro deck left no time for me to draw into what I needed. Both rounds played out the same.
Round 2 vs. G/W Heroic 2-0
Both matches played out similar, the opponents deck did not appear to go off. Obzedat and Ephara provided card advantage, with Devour Flesh and Soul Tithe controlling the limited amount of creatures.
Round 3 vs R/b Devotion - 2-1
Match 1 - Both decks started well, maintaining efficient land drops. Was able to slow down the tempo of opposing deck, to draw into late game wincons, however was land flooded. Opponent drew into solutions then took the first match.
Match 2 - Started the same, using Soul Tithe and Devour Flesh to slow opponents damage, then brought out Ghost Daddy and Ephara. Soul Ransom added to the card advantage, and forced removal to be used on his own creatures, to which were devoured in response. Match 2 to me.
Match 3 - Started off with an average hand, and didn't draw into what I needed. Utilizing creatures for early blocking in an attempt to draw into solutions. Shortly was mana screwed and top decking, with remaining soul tithes slowing down opponents tempo. After dealing with threats, he was top decking. I was able to drop down ghost daddy, ephara and whip, allowing me to stabilizing at 1 health (opponent was at 28 or so from Devour Fleshs). Then chained into several large Sphinx's Revelations, and was able to turn the game around.
Round 4. vs U/B Control 2-0
Match 1 - Ghost Daddy took the first game promptly, landing on turn 5 with a strionic already out. The combination quickly wittled him down.
Match 2 - Detention Spheres clearing his planeswalkers and ratchet bomb, all the while activating Ephara. Obzedat and whip proceeded to finish the job.
FINAL COMMENTS: I changed the mainboard prior to FNM, and am happy with the results. The addition of one more Obzedat, Ghost Council (at the cost of removing a Deputy of Acquittals) ensures he was hitting my hand consistently, and in all instances swayed the course of the game. Additionally, I sideboarded 2x Soul Ransom and a Devour Flesh to add in 3x Detention Spheres. These allowed for more consistent game ones, and adding in Soul Ransom based on the deck I am versing.
Star Players were 100% Obzedat, Ghost Council, Soul Tithe and Strionic Resonator.

Tabletop performances

I played about 10 games with this deck in the lead-up to an actual FNM, and made some significant changes. - Added Hands of Binding and Hidden Strings from my experiences with Tapping into Tapping. These are to be attached to a Wight, Mirko, or CA to help clear a path to the opponent when attacking - When added with Quicken (currently in sideboard) this can be a particularly aggressive move - Thoughtseize, because f*ck you. Such an aggressive card, but the early discard mechanic can save you a lot of pain. Considering adding in 2 more here personally. - Removals have been updated to Doom Blade, Psychic Strike, and Far/Away. Doom Blade is meant to be your all-game king of removals, with Psychic Strike intended for between-turns action and Far/Away for your mid-game board-clearer - Otherwise, the process remains the same as always. Remove creatures early on and Tome Scout whereever possible. If you can get off a Traumatize in one game, you should be set for huge creatures. CA, Mirko and Wight are your heavy hitters; Phenax is nice for a mill card, but considering finding another card who plays off graveyard strength here or simply can annoy (considering replacing him with a Desecration Demon potentially for more creature removal)
1st @ FNM

Took FNM with a 5-0 run. My sideboard really confused and threw off a lot of my opponents because of the hate and removal I splashed in. Agent of the fates took care of desecration demons] and Archangel of Thune. My closest matches were U/W control with Jace, Architect of Thought and Elspeth, Sun's Champion but i had a Murder Investigation on my hero of iroas when he Supreme Verdicted me and I received 11 1/1 tokens on the field. It won me the third game and went 2-1 against both U/W control decks. Played esper in the finals and thoughtseize was really my only problem besides Blood Baron of Vizkopa. Went 2-0 had two great hands but it took almost all play time to Finish those two games. I love playing this deck because I can change some of the mechanics and it still works well each week.

+1 Celestial Flare -1 Path of Bravery I played a RG ramp deck against a friend who was using a RW. Although his deck is not really great, his general look of panic and frustration made me think I could use an extra answer to Stormbreath Dragon.
