Return to an old favourite.

Playing at Modern Thursday so I decided to dust off the ol' girl. Notable changes: Added my lili's. Finished my fetchless landbase. Day of judgment -> Wrath of god Diversified my o-rings and fiend hunters with banishing priests and lights. Added an elspeth, knight-errant and a sword. Dropped down to 1 blood baron in favour of cheaper cards.

He Who Desires a Throne

xxdarkgodzillaxx, 11 years ago

With the Khans spoiler being out and I'm loving Temur and planning a deck with Surrak and Animar in it similarly built to this, I noticed this little gem that fits with Kresh when you swarm the field with creatures and get lucky to get Kresh big. Meet Dragon Throne of Tarkir

Brief summary:Legendary Artifact — Equipment Equipped creature has defender and "2, T: Other creatures you control gain trample and get +X/+X until end of turn where X is this creature's power." Equip 3

Removed Dictate of Karametra because I rarely used it and helped others too much. While your field has a bunch of creatures and Xenagos, God of Revels in play with a big kresh, when you start your battle phase choose Kresh to get Xenagos' boost then tap Kresh using the throne's ability hoping to kill someone.

This deck will be going down in planeswalkers, losing Vraska the Unseen and Jace, Architect of Thought. These will definitely be missed. Ultimate Price, Far / Away, and Opportunity are all spots we have to fill.

Cards Worth Mentioning

Sultai Charm, Murderous Cut, Despise, Empty the Pits, Rakshasa Deathdealer, Prognostic Sphinx, Jace's Ingenuity, Nissa, Worldwaker, Jace, the Living Guildpact, Garruk, Apex Predator, Silence the Believers,

I probably forgot a few but I think these are some of the best choices. I'll touch on each one.

Sultai Charm

Very versatile. This is what you want from a charm and although the mana cost for any one mode is not worth is, the versatility is REALLY good. This card acts like 4 abilitys with both artifact and enchantment removal. The filtering also adds cards to delve.

Murderous Cut

Not what I wanted to replace Ultimate Price or Doom Blade but it could be pretty good as a 1-2 of. I will try to at most run 2 delve cards

Despise

I really like this card, and if Mardu aggro becomes a strong thing like I think it will, this could be potentially better than Thoughtseize in the right situation. I think it has a strong place in a sideboard.

Empty the Pits

I really like this card at instant speed. With a lot of removal this deck likes to play grindy games and this card at end step could be an amazing finisher. If included, this would be the only delve card.

Rakshasa Deathdealer

I really like this guy. Being comparable to Reaper of the Wilds he dodges most removal either by pumping or regenerating. He seems good all game.

Prognostic Sphinx

For those who watched the theros block pt this was an allstar card. In rtr/theros standard it felt too slow with too little returns but in khans it may be a good fit. I am pretty sure my final deck will include at least 2 copies of this card.

Jace's Ingenuity

Seems like a snap fill for Opportunity but we will have to see what the rest of khans brings us. I'm hoping for something along the lines of Underworld Connections hey, I can hope right?

Nissa, Worldwaker

This got considerably better in my opinion with Mizzium Mortars and Supreme Verdict out of standard. I want to get my hands on a couple copies of this for sure.

Jace, the Living Guildpact

He seems really good in the delve shell, so he could be good at turning on our delve cards but I think he isnt that amazing.

Garruk, Apex Predator

With standard seeming like it will slow down, this could get a lot better. Watch out for this guy.

Silence the Believers

I dont see me playing less than 2 copies of this card. It is an easy replacement to Far / Away

I am hoping for some more BUG support that isnt graveyard related but I dont know how much support this will get from khans with Sultai being a graveyard wedge.

Land

Obviously Overgrown Tomb is out. With kahns come some awesome lands. For this deck namely Polluted Delta and Opulent Palace. I dont want to run over 12 lands that come in tapped so where Opulent Palace will come in to replace temples numbers wise I do not know yet, but I think I will be running 4. Fetchlands are great and I want to run the full 4 Polluted Delta. For those who dont know fetchlands are great for thinning your deck, giving you a better chance not to draw lands when you dont want them, and they have a cool synergy with Courser of Kruphix to shuffle away cards you do not want to draw. Without fully knowing what the cards will be in my deck, a manabase that will be somewhat close to what I will be running is

3x Temple of Malady 3x Temple of Deceit 2x Temple of Malady 4x Opulent Palace 4x Polluted Delta 1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth 3x Swamp 2x Island 2x Llanowar Wastes 1x Yavimaya Coast

With 12 lands that come in untapped, you should be casting spells on time.

Llanowar Wastes and Yavimaya Coast are good, but in a control deck you want to take minimal damage from your lands and I dont think they will be necessary as 4 of's. Mana Confluence is much too painful and I think the land base is pretty solid as it is.

In order to maximize the use of artifacts in the deck as a second win condition, I changed a few basic lands for artifact lands.

Main and Sideboard Changes!! (+Comment Sweep)

As-Above_So-Below, 11 years ago

After some extensive playtesting, I've found some cards that came up dead in multiple games and replaced them with spells that buff up my protection package or give me more kill options ;) Also, my sideboard is becoming more and more viable for the challenging decks in the meta, like Storm or Burn. Feel free to give me suggestions on this deck, and +1 if you like it!!

Khan!!!!

VoidSovereign, 11 years ago

Just saw the new khan for temur looks really good gonna try to find room for two of them in my deck.

Just a few changes after an FNM

TheShwillham34, 11 years ago

With it being my first bout with the deck, I've found a bevy of things that needed improvement. Eidolon of Blossoms went from a 4-of, to 3, to 2, and now to 0. I was frequently boarding it out in favor of faster spells and removal. Thus, her slot in the deck has become a pair of Goblin Rabblemaster. The card is too good right now, and with synergy with Purphoros, God of the Forge and Chord of Calling, it seems too good to pass up right now.

This deck folds to control. Plain and simple. If you haven't killed them by turn 5-6, prepare for Quicken and wrath effects. I was very close a couple of times, but that match ended in an 0-2 loss. I also lost a very close game to a very aggressive monored deck. The match almost went to time, but I lost simply because I had run out of blockers against a bunch of small creatures with Madcap Skills attached to them.

Moving forward, I could see this deck still being viable after Khans comes into standard. As I write this, this list only loses about 10 cards, between the main and the sideboard. Burning-Tree Emissary is the biggest loss by far, but the deck will most likely move towards a RUG/Temur color combination. With the number of great midrange creature options, it's hard not going that route.

Cards that were all-stars were Xenagos, God of Revels, Genesis Hydra, and Stormbreath Dragon. Honestly, none of these should have been surprising, but Xenagos was just too powerful for his effect.

The sideboard is a real mess. I was really unsure of myself while I was sideboarding. I had so many cards against control, but I couldn't find the right number of cards to take out for them. In the end, it proved costly.

oh hey

Artifact Izzet Rush Deck is a way better version of what I'm trying to do here. Go check it out.

Avalanche Tusker = Surrak Dragonclaw, Hunt the Weak = Savage Punch, Dissolve = Distainful Stroke, Negate = Adamant Negation, Magma Spray = Winterflame

Rotation

Arorsthrar, 11 years ago

Since so many people have been asking for decks for Khans Standard, I decided to quickly create a few cheap decks and link them to this deck.

-The Best $20 You'll Ever Spend -- Black

-The Best $20 You'll Ever Spend -- Red

I think that starting fresh is better than adapting a deck to be something its not. I'll keep making budget aggro decks until I feel like I've made the best one possible.

More Possibilites

thebobjoe, 11 years ago

Been testing mainboarding the pair of Chandras for a Lightning Strike and a Xenagos, the Reveler. It seems to work, but with morph coming I'm hesitant to remove burn. And Xenagos is just awesome

Planeswalker

carm133, 11 years ago

Added Liliana Vess in maybeboard.

As per suggestions..

Zeal_Amaranth, 11 years ago

Thanks carpecanum and brendan_k! I didn't know Kaalia or Sheoldred existed, but now that I do, I've modified my deck a bit. I removed a few lands and the attendants to make room for most of the cards you suggested, and now I have room for a few more!

Multiple Considerations

LordJello, 11 years ago

I have been really considering several cards, mainly:

What is the communities opinion on these options?
