Herald of Secret Streams

Creature — Merfolk Warrior

Creatures with +1/+1 counters on them can't be blocked.

Having completed my quest to play all 52 of my decks, I decided to try getting a win with all of my decks

Sep 27

Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. Oops, I Did it Again Josh had a crazy start with Exploration and Simic merfolk. Hakbal of the Surging Soul was a house with an unblockable flying granting tribal Lord. I think he had both Herald of Secret Streams and Mist Dancer. Lost again, my losers' record drops to 6-15

I would very much recommend:

Garruk's Uprising as it gives you trample for the big bois, can cantrip AND gives you draw power on ETB. If you cast a hydra with > 3, you get to draw 2 cards, assuming Zaxara is on the field.

Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner Gives you ramp AND ETB triggers. Same as G's Uprising above.

Elemental Bond Have you noticed a pattern yet? More expensive than the others because of the Power 3 trigger vs 4; but still a really sick card to have.

Simic Ascendancy Alternate wincon and pretty easy to get twice since, if a hydra enters with 6 counters, you get 12 if you control Zaxara due to the token getting the +1/+1 counters.

Open Into Wonder Straight up ends the game if a creature is big or your board state went unchecked for too long. Won me plenty of games. If it can't end the game, you can still draw plenty of cards to play on main phase 2.

Finale of Revelation Essentially just an X draw but with additional benefits for going all in. Obviously, Zaxara is needed to get a 10/10, but it's way better than Even the Score; the extra 2 cards drawn is meh and you lift the 4 card restriction. Blue Sun's Zenith is technically better being at instant speed, but you get WAY more value in EDH out of Finale, especially with mana doublers/triplers.

Herald of Secret Streams A more $$ card, but makes your creature with +1/+1 unblockable; usually allows you to kill 1 or 2 players that turn and end the game if it goes unanswered, buying your other threats more time.

Curse of the Swine To exile high prio threats. Giving opponents 2/2 creatures doesn't matter. Gets around indestructible or creatures that are overly powerful such as voltron creatures. I would honestly swap this for Spinning Wheel Kick as that relies heavily on your commander; which Zaxara is already a high prio target.

Those are all the suggestions i have for budget; most of the others i'd make for budget are counter spells. My Zaxara deck should be on my profile if you're interested in higher $$ cards.

If you're looking to lean a bit more into +1/+1 counters, I think Managorger Hydra and Ravenous Slime could both be decent candidates. They balloon into threats on their own without much needed additional investment on your part from support cards, and both have built in evasion.

Champion of Lambholt could help open up evasion for your board to get those combat triggers, and Herald of Secret Streams could also help in this regard.

Herald of Secret Streams and Akroma's Memorial should be added to your Wincon category. I also think you need maybe 1 or 2 more ways to give your field evasion to get the win when you can.

In that vein, I think you need more ways to exploit a big field in a single turn with Haste, which also makes your dorks go faster. You have access to Red, but only a couple ways to give Urtet Haste (and both are colorless to boot). Maybe a couple from this list will help: Samut, Tyrant Smasher, Alibou, Ancient Witness, Concordant Crossroads/Mass Hysteria, Hammer of Purphoros/Rhythm of the Wild, Nahiri's Resolve, Uncivil Unrest, and Winged Hive Tyrant.

(By the way, if you want to split it up into categories on TappedOut, do like this:)

# Category 1 Name
1x Card 1 Name (XYZ)
1x Card 2 Name (XYZ)

Great start, I'll keep thinking of more potential adds (Unwinding Clock?)

Hey! Coming over from Reddit to give some advice.

First off, some overarching themes that I notice:

  • Draw vs Card Advantage - A lot of the cards in your "Draw" category don't actually provide any impactful draw, only scrying and cantrips. I'm an enormous fan of Fell Stinger and Thought Sponge. Easily repeatable draw effects that dump cards in your hand. Scry isn't useful unless you're drawing a ton of cards or are doing some topdeck manipulation.

  • Your creatures are too big - Marchesa appreciates small bodies with big effects rather than big bodies with meh effects. For this reason, I would take out Combustible Gearhulk, Vindictive Lich, Vengeful Ancestor, and Gyruda, Doom of Depths. Playing lots of small, cheaper bodies lets your deck fly under the radar until it pops off. It will also give you more targets for Imperial Recruiter.

  • Aristocrats style - Marchesa doesn't play like your typical aristocrats deck, Blood Artist isn't very effective when you're only sacrificing 2-3 creatures a turn. It's also counterintuitive to Dethrone. Abusing ETB and LTB effects is more important than slowly draining opponents

  • Not enough counter distribution - You only have 5 cards under counters and they're all either situational or restrictive. Drop some Thran Vigil type cards in there and you'll go far

Overall, you're too reliant on creatures for draw, removal, etc. Run some efficient draw and removal spells

Next up, cards I recommend removing. I've playtested most of these and they're not nearly as impactful as they seem.

  • Blood Artist - Covered this above, you don't want to gain life
  • Combustible Gearhulk - Opponents will often just take the damage early game and late game you do NOT want to be spending 6 mana on a 6/6 with no impactful ETB.
  • Vindictive Lich - An alright card, not fantastic though. I'm very pressed for 4 drops in my deck so it didn't make the cut.
  • Vengeful Ancestor - Not a very impactful card. You're running Kardur, Doomscourge so this card is just overshadowed.
  • Gyruda, Doom of Depths - 6 mana to maybe cheat in one creature? Not a huge fan. If you want to replace it with a grave robber effect Puppeteer Clique is better. Still not fantastic, it didn't make the cut in my deck
  • Aether Channeler - A fine card, the mode selection is okay. I'm not in love with the effects it gives though
  • Morbid Opportunist - Only one draw a turn? Blasphemy
  • Woe Strider Free sac outlets are nice, but I find I get overrun with them when I have more than 5 in a deck. Also more expensive just to scry? Not a fan
  • Dauthi Voidwalker Will generate so much hate. Unless you can fend off your opponents don't run it
  • Faerie Artisans Not the kind of stealing Marchesa likes, tokens aren't the name of the game here. Something like Zealous Conscripts will take you much further
  • Phantom Steed Same as above, tokens are nice but this isn't a great card
  • Ravenous Chupacabra Too much mana for removal. Black and blue have much cheaper options

There are more that I personally wouldn't run, but that's up to how you like to play your deck.

Now for some cards I would include in every Marchesa deck

  • Thran Vigil - Allows you to immediately sac creatures that come back + an extra layer of protection
  • Uncivil Unrest - Same as above but you can also give haste to fresh casts. Double damage doesn't hurt
  • Fell Stinger - Repeatable, powerful draw on a deathtouch body
  • Thought Sponge - Incredible draw engine. Sac it on opponents turns every time it enters and you'll draw AT LEAST 6 cards a turn cycle.
  • Iron Apprentice - Great 1 drop, can distribute counters if you're having trouble and is sacrifice fodder
  • Rakdos Cackler - sacrifice fodder
  • Flayer of the Hatebound - This card gets a bad rap but it's great in Marchesa
  • Herald of Secret Streams - Wincon alert! This card sneaks under the radar until you hit someone with 25 unblockable damage
  • The Ozolith - Expensive, but who doesn't want to keep their counters for 1 mana!

Of course, please take a look at my deck if you need inspiration. It's pretty casual, but the synergies can be backbreaking if your opponents don't keep you in check. I also have a ton of cards in my maybeboard that I'm considering or have saved for later.

Thanks! I’ve got both elves already, and am strict about tribal. I’ve just got Herald of Secret Streams and Loyal Guardian as my only non-elves.

DrukenReaps you are right it would be easir to just do mono green hydra commander, but i already have a monogreen hydra deck just for casual. and i wanted to give a little bit of a challenge to myself, and with doing five colors there are things that i could add to support the hydras and make them more nastier than those multi headed creatures are, like being a jerk and adding in Herald of Secret Streams
