Prized Possession

An interesting question for you all:

What's your most prized card?

It can be your first mythic, favorite land you've used in every deck, or a recent pull you've never been so proud of. Whatever it is, what's the single card you would never ever let go of?

Mine is my Foil Angel of Flight Alabaster , signed in reflective silver ink. The art is gorgeous, combines my two favorite tribes, is amazingly accented in foil, and has the beautiful silver accent from the signature of one of my favorite artists. This thing is never getting out of my hands.

So, let us know below what your most treasured card is. Maybe even brag a little ;)

It would have to be Jester's Cap from ice age. I have a deck box with it printed on it, and the over sized 6x9 of this bad boy. I have always been fond of evil looking jesters thanks to this card.

Mine would probably have to be my Russian Primeval Titan . I got it from an M12 pack I bought over in Munich, Germany when I was there for a 3 week exchange program. I didn't open the packs until I got home, so the suspense nearly killed me.

Probably my Elderscale Wurm . Just love that wurm, as it was one of my first mythic rares.

From the moment I read through the lore of Magic, I immediately loved Karn's background and Karn Liberated matches with his story and capabilities in his background. I would love to get it signed by Chan, though.

Probably the second favorite is Ral Zarek because I like most of Deschamps' art and Ral was the first planeswalker I saw when I looked into Magic several months ago. The card's abilities fit the flavor for me once again, where the ultimate just summarizes Izzet for me. Again, would love to get it signed.

For me it's Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre . My first ever mythic and it was from my first pack of Rise of the Eldrazi I got. I made a ramp deck with him in it along with a few other eldrazi I had gotten as well. Sadly the deck got was stolen one day and I never got another copy of it.

For me, it's my Kaalia of the Vast . First ever commander I've built a deck around, and I'm still fine tuning her. Got her in a trade after weeks of searching and I've built a pretty solid deck since then. No way I will ever trade her off, though I am trying to find an artist to do some alternate or full art with her.

My most prized possession is the Jace vs Chandra Counterspell just because they say "HAY. IM the one in control here". That, and they're way super super pretty.

For me its my foil signed Umezawa's Jitte that I pulled. Although Ive only been playing since Zendikar my grandmother bought me 5 packs of Betrayers of Kamigawa for Christmas a couple years back and all the rares were just bad rares, I was kinda sad and in the last pack was this foil beauty that I eventually sent to the artist, along with some money to be signed and now that I got fully into legacy I can finally use it :D

That's a pretty difficult question for me. I love my Sydri, Galvanic Genius and I'll almost definitely get her signed. But as of now, she's all boring and stock. I suppose my Modern Masters Sword of Light and Shadow is my most prized card. My friends and I did our own MM draft and I was able to tie for first and got second pick (dumb tiebreakers) and was able to get it. Now, doing well at draft is almost second nature to me (almost, mind you. Every once in a while you ask yourself why on earth you decided to draft how you did). But at the time, I had only drafted once before, with Gatecrash when I first started. Honestly, I was scared going in. I feared my lack of card knowledge and skill would lead to a waste of $25. But I went with GW Thallids and totally stomped everyone. Except the guy who got first. Our match was a draw, 0-0-1. If we didn't get time called, he would have decked himself and I could have gotten a Vendilion Clique instead. But the Sword has been a symbol to me that I have the skills to play the game well. Plus, it's great in EDH :D

My prized card isn't exactly a Magic Card, but it is a Pokemon TCG card. Back when I was a little kid, the local 7-11 sold packs. So I went one day as a kid and my grandmother bought me my first pack of Base2 (for those who don't know much about the Pokemon TCG, Base 2 was essentially a reprint set, every card from the set I think is a reprint from either Base Set, Jungle, or Fossil the first 3 sets) But anyway the rare was that Charizard that was insanely expensive.

January 1, 2014 5:11 a.m.

My set of Revised Edition Lightning Bolt s, I've had these bad boys ever since I started my first deck. They are a staple and the foundation of my Boros deck. I got them when I received a starter deck of Revised from my sister in the US, she got them in a garage sale alongside a few other cards of The Dark.

Mine is too hard to narrow down. Its either my altered Liliana of the Veil , Karakas . FNM promo Counterspell , or beta Earthbind . The altered lili is black canary, I plan to get stece to alter my other 3 into huntress, barbara gordon as the oracle and lady blackhawk or lady shiva to complete the birds of prey group.

January 1, 2014 6:04 a.m.

@gufymike, That sounds cool, can you post a picture of the altered Liliana of the Veil ?

Probably actually my Jevela deck I'm foiling out.

okay back story first, the short version: ex-roommate gets us to play D&D, we play D&D, I get back into fantasy stuff after a long time, decide to get back into Magic, ask DM roommate if he remembers how to play MTG, he does, he shows me, we get addicted, we stop playing D&D. One day ex-roommate calls me over and shows me a Magic card on his computer and it is none other than Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker , which we thought was fuckin cool. Another friend and I split a box of M13, I pull a Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and we jizz our pants. Two packs later I pull a FOIL Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and we jump up and down and throw up and jizz our pants. I gave him then non-foil, keep the foil. Ex-roommate tried to get me to trade it for a Garruk Wildspeaker but I just couldn't bring myself to trade, as much as I wanted the Garruk. I still have my Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker double-sleeved and in one of those protective sleeves too

January 1, 2014 11:07 a.m.

This is a silly card but my very first draft I beat my friends and made it to our "final match" and I and the other friend were x-0. we went to a game 3 where the game was his for the taking so I was like whatever ill swing out (to do 3 damage and bring him to 2). He took it feeling his turn he would inevitably win. End step I played a Stab Wound .... passed the turn and pissed him off so much. My prize c:

Well lemme check out the collection binder and see what's what.

1/ My collection of destroyed hated cards
Many years ago during Mirrodin Block, I was amused at the concept of Timesifter . A friend of mine offered to just give me a playset on the condition that I build a deck around them, and if I ever manage to beat him with it , he would get to tear it up. So a couple weeks later, not only did I beat him with Timesifter, I beat him by dealing lethal damage with Bosh, Iron Golem literally throwing Timesifter at his head. He just started yelling, grabbed a Timesifter, pulled it out of the sleeve, tore it up and threw the pieces in the air. I ended up collecting the pieces, taping it back together, and having him sign it. This sparked off the idea of having everyone in my playgroup name a card they just really hated, which I would trade for so they could cathartically rip it up, and it was taped back together, signed, and kept. Notable choices in the collection include Megrim , Mindslaver , Plow Under and Blightning .

2/ I have all 9 ante cards: Contract from Below , Darkpact , Demonic Attorney , Timmerian Fiends , Amulet of Quoz , Jeweled Bird , Tempest Efreet , Rebirth and Bronze Tablet

3/ My foil Swamp Mosquito signed "Froth Convulse JT" in honour of my actually killing somebody with poison counters back in the days before infect.

4/ Many cards because the art is just frigging amazing: A foil Vanish into Memory , Infernal Harvest , the Unholy Strength with the pentagram

5/ The best card in the history of magic: Floral Spuzzem which, as written, needs to be intelligent in order for the game to proceed if it ever attacks and isn't blocked.

January 1, 2014 11:57 a.m.

the foil Reya Dawnbringer from 10th edition my friend gave me for my birthday, that, and he needed to kiss up to the dm to stay alive

January 1, 2014 12:03 p.m.

I have a few favorites...

First has to be the foil promo Emrakul, the Aeons Torn . The alternate art is pretty sweet.

Second are my playset of Primeval Titan . Awesome card.

Third are my two Chain Lightning from Legends and two Blood Moon from The Dark. The older cards have quite the nostalgic factor for an Old Fogey like me :-)

Last are the original printings of Stomping Ground and Godless Shrine . I picked them up before Modern was a huge deal and for around $8 apiece.

Mine would probably have to either be my foil Sensei's Divining Top from way back when, or my playset of Thundermaw Hellkite , which people traded to me for well under value, knowingly, just to see what I'd do with them. Went on to win two game days with those dragons, so they have some good sentimental values, and will never trade them, same with my Gilded Lotuses from way back when.

P.S. I don't like the new preview box.

My most prized possession is my judges foil Vendilion Clique who i use as a general for EDH. She is fun to play and brag about, second would be foil Sword of War and Peace . It is really pretty with the fire/white stuff on the sword, nad the two suns in the background to make a really neat piece of art.

Rhadamanthus says... #37

Many years ago, before the cards involved were worth Mega Bux, I traded an Unlimited Time Vault for a playset of Force of Will . There was a period of several years where the trade was definitely not in my favor (I think it's close to even right now), but those Forces have won me so many more games and given me so much more fun than that Vault ever could have.

There's an anecdote my friends like to remind me about of one time when I was a real smartass to a guy who was going around at a big tournament asking if people had Library of Alexandria for trade. I'm embarassed about it, but they still think it's hilarious for some reason. Anyway, I'm glad to say I finally do have a Library.

A couple years ago, a friend interviewed Jon Finkel and Bob Maher. After they were done talking he got them to sign a few things, including one of my Commanders: The Mimeoplasm .

rache contact the artist, he has a deviant art page and website. Usually you need to send a S.A.S.E. with the card and the artists will do it for free, usually. I've never contacted him for anything, so I can't say for certain. Otherwise attend an event he's at, that's how I got my things signed by a few artists.

I wonder if Argyle will do alters for my deck Steve's Argyle Socks? :P

January 2, 2014 10:30 a.m.

Devonin says... #46

While I respect that he'll do anything for anybody who has the money to afford it, it was very frustrating spending plus of 90 minutes in line for him, to get a couple cards signed, while he did full playmats for people in line ahead of us, or people who wanted 40+cards signed.

I would never ask any artist to sign more than 5 single cards or 1 playset. Otherwise you look like (and probably are) a greedy bastard.

acbooster's "All Steve Argyle" deck not withstanding. If you play with that deck at all, I'd totally support getting the whole thing signed. It was just annoying seeing the guys going "Here is every Deathrite and Liliana I could lay hands on, make them more valuable for resale plox"

January 2, 2014 10:37 a.m.

acbooster says... #47

Right. Steve is my favorite artist, and the scary thing is that the deck is coherent with two possible wincons in Mayael's Aria and swinging after using Dawnglare Invoker or Lavalanche .

January 2, 2014 10:40 a.m.

acbooster says... #48

Any cards I could get signed by him I'd never get rid of, it doesn't feel right getting stuff signed by someone just to get more value out of it.

January 2, 2014 10:41 a.m.

Devonin says... #49

Mostly it's that I consider signing a card to be for sentimental purposes and not for "increasing the value" purposes, whereas a lot a lot of people line up with money cards to turn them into bigger money cards. I'd never trade away any of the cards I got signed myself. I got them signed on purpose!

January 2, 2014 10:42 a.m.

gufymike says... #50

Devonin, the sad fact is 'increased value' is a myth. Only to the few that don't understand the economics is that truth. Stores buy them at 'lightly damaged' and only the young and collectors really value them above that. This alter only values at 60$ because the card is 40$ plus the 20$ to get it done. that's retail, so selling it to a store is probably 35-40$, possibly less. To a collector I might get 80, but because argyle alters a lot of lili's it's hard to get more based on uniqueness.

Thing is the signed and alters are valued by the eye of the beholder. The actual market value though is much lower near mint.

Also, try and get their earlier next time. I was able to get it down in 20 minutes, because I was onre of the first few in line.
