Way of the Samurai

This is a conquest built for a valiant and strong creature type, Samurais and their friends. Revival, emboldened, valorous strikes!

A deck in White (), and built specifically for either Auron, Venerated Guardian or Cyan, Vengeful Samurai to lead.

This is a thematic build for recursion and revival tactics. With a core identity rooted in solemn, strong-willed Samurai, I felt it necessary to include the following cast:

  • Leonardo, Sewer Samurai for both mechanical relevancy and thematic cohesion.

  • Bushi Tenderfoot   for becoming Kenzo, the Hard Hearted which is one of my favorite legendaries of all time. Explosive one drop value.

  • Auron, Venerated Guardian because let's face it- if you're here on my list for my deck, you know how much I love Final Fantasy as a whole and my borderline obsession with Auron.

  • Cyan, Vengeful Samurai was my other option for commander and boy, both of them somehow make a deck like this shine in a peculiar way.

(The relevance of a big swinging commander to sneak the damage is a turn 8 or 9 move, but it did happen.)

"...Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!..."

Auron, FFX

  • This deck is intentionally designed as a choice between two commanders, both of which happily supported by the aforementioned 98.

  • A mainline component of how I have put this deck together is to be consistently average at it's power level.

  • A big piece of how I see this list as a success is by doing things more relaxed than other decks I've constructed, but what was paramount to it's success was not taking the challenge too seriously.

  • The intention was something roughly powered as Bracket 3, maybe even Bracket 2. The concept isn't fairly overpowered and uses a few Game Changers, most notably in my opinion is Drannith Magistrate who can prevent your opponents from casting their commanders.

  • Another core identity to our construction was using a critical mass of Goodstuff Dollar-Store yep you betcha stylized one-drops. I refer to Selfless Savior, The Duke, Rebel Sentry, etc.

  • To further this ideal, my core cast have the ever present ability of "..other stuff gains indestructible.." or something along those lines. I refer here to stuff like Resolute Watchdog, Selfless Spirit, and again his most of those creatures and spells are living around or mana.

"...The power courses through me...! Mastery of the sword is within my reach! ... The past lies in darkness. The dawn brings light. We must look to the future now. For this, I raise my sword!...".

Cyan, FFVI

  • Unlike most of the collection I've detailed over the years, this deck sincerely doesn't want to win too early or appear too oppressive.

  • I'm still looking forward to hearing from the community about the relaxed nature of this deck, and maybe giving it future updates while still keeping it casual.
