Sideboard added
Dspignatari, 9 years ago
I have tweaked and made this deck my own. I have a sideboard put together now as well. I would really like to here what you guys think. Strong weaknesses are counterspells, thoughtseiz/kozilek, and stony silence. Sideboard trues to alleviate this pain.
A step back.

I moved in again an old friend: I took off Phyrexian Obliterator for Geralf's Messenger. We'll see who does it better.
Also, removed Surgical Extraction in the sideboard in favor of two more Duress.
Cleared all the comments.

Removal
rebelhipster, 9 years ago
I spent some time straightening out the side board. The biggest issue I ran into with the original deck was a total lack of removal. Now with some removal I can keep my guys out without having to trade to stay alive.
More changes

I've haven't been playing this deck as much as I would like to lately, so I'm posting my current work-in-progress list. This list is a little low on land, so if you're going to run it you'll want aggressively mulligan until you're good. I'd like to get this list really nailed down, but with C15 around the corner it might have to wait until after the holidays.

1) Curse of Exhaustion -> Leyline of Anticipation Not sure yet whether the Curse was the best card to trade in with the Leyline yet, as I have seen where actual play of it whenever it _was_ in the deck, but the Leyline is essential for when need to keep counter mana open and still want to play the things I have in my hand. This is going to be a very relieving card, once it does hit the field. ---- 2) Return to Dust -> Angelic Field Marshal Return to Dust doesn't see much play apart from removing god-commanders, and the Stony Silence to deal with Artefacts comes in a lot cheaper. More often than not this has been tutored out of my deck and used against me. The Field Marshal will be in for testing basis - but anything to give Ojutai his Vigilance is nice ~ ---- 3) Starfield of Nyx -> Rhystic Study The Starfield in theory felt like a really neat card to put in there. get back enchantments, have most anything else be a creature for blocking or attacking - neat. Though in the actual meta, there's just very little enchantment hate. I've never gotten anything back from this as never anything actually hit the graveyard and whenever someone played another board removal I found myself breathing a sigh of relieve that "whew, I control less than 5". Rhystic Study doesn't need much of an explanation, it's a bomb! ----- Some of the new Commander Cards I really dig. I plan to get a couple of singles once it's out, namely: - Oreskos Explorer - Bastion Protector (possibly for Supression Bonds) - Grasp of Fate (possibly for Stasis Snare) - Shielded by Faith (possibly for Indestructability) Not entirely sure yet what to take out for these - any suggestions?

Update 1
NesciO, 9 years ago
Removed Hornet Queens and One Dozen Eyes. Instead, I added in 3 Hooded Hydra's. These are pretty strong by theirselves, but also generate the needed tokens.
Additionally, I took out 2 Forests and added in Life's Legacy, to get that card advantage the deck was missing.

Commander 2015

Ahh how spoiler season is so loved! Soon as i heard about the enemy guilds for this years commander series I was very excited! Though the usual Golgari plans don't match this deck's, a few cards i think will make the cut!
Meren of Clan Nel Toth - This offers similar abilities to alot of the deck, naming just a few: Gleancrawler, Sheoldred, Whispering One
Deadly Tempest - Nice board wipe with the added benefit of dealing alot of damage if I make them swarm.

MASSIVE UPDATE
DudelRok, 9 years ago
I apparently had not touched this deck on tapped out in months, which is a shame 'cause it has gone through many changes in those months. So much has changed and the deck runs so much more smoothly. Scrapped any "life gain" subtheme, leaving is to my commander to "gain me any life," but Oloro is mostly here because he can draw me cards and is in fun reanimator colors. Made the description more useful and amusing to read, too!
A tribal "Gate" deck.
Godhead_Initiated, 9 years ago
There are only two win conditions in this deck. The first win condition is kill the opponent/s by the lands that can transform into creatures. The second win condition is to get 10 gates with different names onto the battlefield in any way possible. There are a couple different ways to do that, Diabolic Tutor, Expedition Map, Sylvan Scrying, or Maze's End. And Maze's End is the win condition that you need on the battlefield.
Thanks for the support!

Hey everyone,
Im happy to see that this deck is getting some positive feedback! I'm hoping I've inspired a few others to try building with "the commander who was left in the shadows"!
I played about ten hours straight of EDH today on Cockatrice, and play tested the living hell out of this deck. I've found a lot of important things out tonight:
- I was running too many sacrifice lands. The main problem was that I would run out of basic lands, or that I would be mana screwed at the beginning of games as all I would draw were colorless lands. (Oddly enough, I still won every game that I started off as mana screwed).
In order to fix this, I have added multiple ramp staples to the deck, and have also removed a few sacrifice lands in exchange of 2 additional swamps, and forests.
-
Haste and Darksteel Plate were not really necessary. I only played Mazirek when it was a turn that I could abuse her counters, or sacrifice my creatures in response to a kill effect. I will continue to test the deck, but it seems like both are unnecessary.
-
Removal. I was trying to run the deck without any type of instant removal. Bad, bad idea. I've been playing against a lot of mana dork/weenie Ezuri decks, so I added Killing Wave as a trial. If I have tokens in play, I would obviously let them be sacrificed to let Mazirek get huge. If I am playing against a competing token or weenie deck, and they need to pay 3-5 life per creature, they are likely going to sacrifice their entire board.
-
Politics. Smokestack (although one of my favorite cards) ended up being removed. I found that it often sat in my hand during times that I did not have a token engine in play. When it was in play, it caused the board to focus me directly, which prevented us from pulling off our combat tricks. I find that piloting this deck can be described as a shotgun. You need to take time to load the gun before it can go off - often explosively.
-
Potential Cuts.
I don't want to go crazy and revamp the deck every hour, so I'm trying to give time inbetween any major changes. (Although recently I have been making revisions after every game that the deck doesn't perform how I want it to perform)
As of the moment, the following cards are on my potential "hit list":
Reprocess as amazing as it is, I haven't actually found it very useful. When I have a large amount of tokens, I don't often want to sacrifice them. I usually end up using it on my lands as a last ditch effort to win the game. I will keep watching it and see how it perform sin my hand.
Golgari Charm intended to regenerate my board, I have won almost every game that the same turn I made a large board-state. I think replacing this with some type of shroud, such as Asceticism would work out better.
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord I figured he could be a decent win-condition, and a repeatable sacrifice outlet from my graveyard. So far, he can be pretty much useless. I think Skullbriar would have done a better job so far, but once again we'll keep an eye on it.
It That Betrays Sound hilarious in theory, but it's honestly not working out for me. If I have 12 mana to cast It That Betrays, it's unlikely I will have enough to follow up with a Death Cloud or something similar. Maybe if I throw a Tooth and Nail to get It That Betrays and some type of creature that causes opponents to sacrifice things, it would work better?
Anyhow, I'll keep testing and modifying the deck until I can have it in my hands this upcoming Friday.
Thanks again for all the +1's and support!

Minor Changes and Combos
KBgamer, 9 years ago
I took out Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond and Staff of Nin and replaced them for Reya Dawnbringer Sidisi, Undead Vizier and Soul Foundry
Now here is how the combos work
Viscera Seer/Munda, Ambush Leader Put Allies to bottom, Two mana Grenzo, Dungeon Warden to put those Allies that were either scryed or Rallied to the bottom and Cheat them in
Sidisi, Undead Vizier Exploit herself to tutor Reya Dawnbringer Next turn Reya Dawnbringer Brings back Sidisi, Undead Vizier Exploit herself again to tutor what you need next, Rinse repeat
Sac an Ally with 2 power or less and a really good rally ability likeResolute Blademaster or Firemantle Mage to Viscera Seer and then bring them back into combat with Alesha, Who Smiles at Death tapped and attacking AND triggering Rally
Soul Foundry to imprint any good ally with a good sizable etb effect when an Ally enters
