Description

Second go at an Artifact / Vehicle deck.

is appreciated if you like this deck, or add it to one of your folders.

This is not simply a Vehicle deck, but rather a Vehicle/Artifact Tribe deck with Control aspects, that aims to win as fast as it can by Controlling the early to mid game.

With the reveal of Yahenni's Expertise and Consulate Crackdown my Speedway Fanatics deck is in big trouble.

It was starting to be shut down anyway, due to the local meta incorporating more Control aspects.

I still like the basic idea of the deck so I've decided to stick with it for the AEther Revolt season.

I've turned it into a deck rather than Mono-Red and added Counter spells.

So far it's been testing well.

Under Consideration:

PLAY TIPS

The earlier versions of this deck aimed for speed.

This one is more about Control.

You basically want to get Creatures on the field in your first couple of turns, then leave enough mana up for protecting Vehicles and Creatures with Counter spells.

Early Game

Mid Game

  • Don't tap out in order to play Creatures or Vehicles. Only play those spells if you are also able to play Counter spells to protect them.

  • Chief of the Foundry provides buffs and should be a priority.

  • Foundry Inspector is also very good as it lets you cast all your Artifacts for less.

  • You will need to assess the game state carefully to work out whether it's better to cast Chief of the Foundry or Foundry Inspector.

  • Four Wandering Fumarole give you extra Crew members.

Late Game

WIN CONDITIONS

  1. Damage from Vehicles

  2. Damage from Artifact Creatures that have been boosted by Chief of the Foundry

  3. Controlling the Opponent with Counter spells.

There are 25 Lands, in order to hit land drops in the early game, and facilitate earlier use of Counter spells.

Unfortunately making any other cuts proved far too difficult, so I ended up with only three Foundry Inspector.

SIDEBOARD

Padeem, Consul of Innovation puts another body on the board, helps protect all Artifacts, and facilitates draw.

Disallow gives you a way of Countering spells that Dispel misses, such as Declaration in Stone, annoying late game Creatures, etc. it is an extra spell to Counter a Planeswalkers.

(Formerly Summary Dismissal was in this spot to give a chance to Counter any annoying spell in the mid game, when Vehicles are about to win. It is very good at stopping the triggers of Archangel Avacyn  Flip and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger.)

Devour in Flames helps deal with Planeswalkers and big Creatures.

Welding Sparks is an amazing card in an Artifact deck. I played it during prerelease, in a deck based on this one, and it was off the hook. Should easily be able to do five or more damage to an Opponent Creature. At Instant speed. Ridiculous.

You will usually Sideboard these out (in order):

3x Inventor's Apprentice
3x Untethered Express
1x Speedway Fanatic
1x or 2x Skysovereign, Consul Flagship
1x Chief of the Foundry

Updates

I came second at FNM this week but the field was very weak.

A lot of newer players. Some of the more experienced players were in the shop but were playing a different game with each other.

Standard is drying up at the moment.

2-0 Humans

This was a kid about the age of ten.

He kept playing Stasis Snare on my Skysovereign, Consul Flagship the first game, which slowed me down a bit, and he was also able to gain a lot of life.

I eventially got a field full of Artifact Creatures out, buffed by Chief of the Foundry, and he eventually lost all his blockers.

Game 2 I sided Dispel out and put in Disallow. With that I was able to Counter his Stasis Snares. Then I was able to hit with Skysovereign, Consul Flagship, and he had no fliers. I had gotten some early damage in with Speedway Fanatic, so it only took three hits from the Ship, and he was done.

Between games I helped a young man to strengthen his deck by putting in extra lands. He only had 19 in.

0-2 Marvel Colossus

This guy won the night and he was being a cocky little shit about it.

His deck was very strong.

Basically he cheated Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger on to the field with Aetherworks Marvel, and also used to Artifacts to get Metalwork Colossus out.

He told me at the end of the match that his deck couldn't be beaten by anything in Standard. Then my partner beat it on the first game they played, with the Angelic High deck that I built for him.

Hilarious.

2-1 Discard

He kept burning my Creatures with Lightning Axe and Fiery Temper but it wasn't long before I got some Creatures to stick, and took out the game.

His deck had a lot of draw spells in it like Cathartic Reunion, which I think weakened it overall.

Game 1 was over so fast that I didn't really know how to Sideboard.

This proved costly for me in Game 2 as he got his plan working and was able to shut one of my Ships down with Tightening Coils .

He got a bunch of Creatures out and that was gg.

He had a particularly nice play where he would put Stitchwing Skaab on the battlefield from his Graveyard, also bringing Prized Amalgam back to the field from the 'yard.

Game 3 I took out Dispel for Disallow.

He wasn't getting many Creatures out and I had two Scrapheap Scroungers out that I was chipping away with.

I chose to play a bit slower so that I could hold open mana.

He tried to wipe my field with Kozilek's Return, which I Negated, then tried to do it again with ANOTHER Kizilek's Return, which I also Negated.

I was hanging on to Disallow on my last Turn. He tried to Flash a Creature in but I Disallowed it and hit for game.

2-1 Marvel Combo

The idea of this deck was to get lots of Aethertide Whales on the field, give them Haste, the hit for a lot.

I was too fast for it in Game 1, getting a Skysovereign, Consul Flagship on to field by Turn 4, Haste Crewing with two Speedway Fanatics, and hitting for 7 due to also having a Chief of the Foundry on the field.

An Untethered Express came out next turn, Haste Crewed again, and my Opponent was finished off very quickly.

Game 2 I had a bad draw. He got away from me and had five Whales on the field by Turn 8. I didn't have any fliers, so that finished me off.

Third game he had a bad draw. I started smacking him with Aethersphere Harvester and Skysovereign, Consul Flagship and it wasn't too long before his life was whittled down.

He did try to target one of my Creatures with Spontaneous Mutation but I cast Negate to shut that shit down.

My partner came third. We were both only beaten by the guy who took first.

My partner had the shits. He thought he had easily taken out second place.

He had not.

clayperce that was VERY helpful. Thanks so much.

If you used Dispel to protect my Creatures then it was doing it's job. That's exactly what I want it to do.

The more of my Creatures that stay on the board, the more likely I am to win.

With Spell Quellers et. al. Disallow and Welding Sparks come in.

I find that if I can Counter or Destroy the first one that tries to interrupt my plans, that is all I usually need to do.

Later on I can dispatch those Creatures at will every time Skysovereign, Consul Flagship attacks.

It's REALLY important not to get too obsessed with and Aethersphere Harvester, or you can weaken the overall focus of the deck.

The way I look at it is as though it were a weaker version of Siege Rhino - I hit them for 3, I get 3 life, that's a 6 point swing in my favour.

Later in the game I usually end up getting an 8 point or more swing, when one or two Chief of the Foundry are on the field.

If I can get an extra swing due to Aether Hub, that is gold.

However, it's not essential and I do not want to have to use Aether Hub for coloured mana, as that defeats the purpose of what it is in the deck to do. I ran four Aether Hub last season and often found myself colour screwed and out of

I have found that two is just right. I never need to use them for coloured mana with that amount.

It must also be remembered that I have four Aethersphere Harvesters in the deck. That seems to be enough to get me out of trouble if I need some extra life.

In this deck Welding Sparks is insanely good. Much stronger than Harnessed Lightning.

To give an example, today in a match against StuBi irl I hit one of his Creatures for 9 damage. At Instant speed. Ridiculous.

I know I've said that above, but it bears repeating.

So, even with the extra , it just doesn't make the cut.

Thanks for the time you took to play my deck and comment on it. You're a star.

Why no Glint-Nest Crane? It allows some card advantage and will almost never miss in your deck. It also crews your vehicles besides skysovereign

February 2, 2017 7:28 p.m.

Argy says... #3

What a strange way to offer advice, "Why no ...?"

Surely it's far more polite to say, "How about ...?"

Glint-Nest Crane doesn't benefit from other Creatures such as Foundry Inspector and Chief of the Foundry.

It also doesn't put Spire of Industry online, and it doesn't buff Inventor's Apprentice.

February 3, 2017 7:55 a.m.

Zaueski says... #4

Rude comments aside, Glint-Nest Crane seems really good in your deck. Currently you've got a disruptive aggro deck, but if the meta ever calls for you to go just a tiny bit slower I'd add the crane.

February 3, 2017 8:12 a.m.

Argy says... #5

The thing is Zaueski that the deck is Artifact Tribal.

It often wins just by Chief of the Foundry buffing everything or by being able to flood the board with Artefacts due to Foundry Inspector.

I'd rather have Padeem, Consul of Innovation than Glint-Nest Crane on the field, and that is already in my Sideboard.

I may suggest Baral's Expertise for the sideboard versus other vehicle or artifact-centric decks. And have you considered the Consulate Dreadnought/Siege Modification combo?

February 4, 2017 6:38 a.m.

Argy says... #7

I'm aware of what Siege Modification has to offer and don't like it as it gives Opponents more options for dealing with my Vehicles.

One of the beauties of playing Vehicles is that they MUST be dealt with by using Instants, and I have Dispel and Negate in the Mainboard to answer that.

If you put Consulate Dreadnought in your deck to interact with Siege Modification then you tend to be overly reliant on getting those two cards in hand. You can't Crew the Dreadnought unless you go all on it and stack your deck full of Crew that has a high Power. That ends up making a very weak deck overall.

There are currently only two people in my local meta playing Vehicles. One of them is me. So it's not really worth it for me to add Baral's Expertise to my Sideboard.

Tbh I would put Release the Gremlins in the Sideboard if I was playing against a lot of Vehicle decks.

Thanks for your feedback. It lets me think about why I made certain card choices.

Censuring says... #8

I put why no because I was asking your reasoning for not putting it there then giving my reasons on why you should. While it doesn't benefit from cheif it does have evasion which none of your creatures do. It may not pump apprentice but if you top deck it turn 5 it digs deeper into your deck for something and still crews most of the vehicles which is better than a vanilla 2/3 on that turn

February 7, 2017 1:14 a.m.

Argy says... #9

"IF" is not a good enough reason to do something.

My Vehicles all have evasion.

I don't have one single Vanilla Creature in this deck.

I know WHY you said "why not ..." As I said, there are more polite ways of giving advice.

February 7, 2017 6:51 a.m.

Argy says... #11

Your phrasing was rude. I am responding in kind.

If you don't understand that Trample is an evasion ability then you need to play Magic for a bit longer.

You are using the word Vanilla incorrectly in regard to Magic.

I don't know why you're still here. I have told you twice that I don't find your suggestions helpful.

Do you think you're going to argue me into agreeing with you? lol

Bye now.

Love Speedway Fanatic and Untethered Express here. I forgot Speedway even existed in the format.

February 11, 2017 3:51 p.m.

Argy says... #14

HairyManBack the really nice thing about Speedway Fanatic is when you use it to give Skysovereign, Consul Flagship Haste, and then do 6 damage to a Planeswalker when the Flagship hits the field.

February 11, 2017 7:56 p.m.

HairyManBack says... #15

Ah, ic why your running 3x Flagship. A little bonus with the haste. Wasn't thinking really much on that plane because of his double crew requirements.

February 12, 2017 5:12 p.m.

Argy says... #16

Actually HairyManBack with Scrapheap Scrounger, Foundry Inspector, and Chief of the Foundry providing buffs I usually have plenty of Creatures that can Crew 3 on their own.

February 12, 2017 10:12 p.m.

HairyManBack says... #17

I gotcha. Yeah, prior I had commented I looked at the list with the assumption crewing with a single creature. However, crewing two creatures for a 6/5 flying haste double lightning strike turn 4 seems about as good as it's going to get for this meta.

February 13, 2017 2:51 p.m.

Ceremonious Rejection is solid against Vehicles and artifact builds. Good SB card I'd think. Looks pretty solid, +1

February 25, 2017 12:08 a.m.

Argy says... #19

It's a very good card, no doubt, but in my local meta the only colourless spell being played is Walking Ballista, and that isn't in the majority of decks.

Most of the time the card would end up staying in my Sideboard, taking up space.

February 25, 2017 12:37 a.m.

Argy says... #20

Actually I've changed my mind. I'm gonna give it a go.

February 25, 2017 12:42 a.m.

Calispotato says... #21

Have you considered Padeem, Consul of Innovation or is it too slow?

May 18, 2017 8:55 p.m.

Calispotato says... #22

Oops nevermind i didn't see that in the sideboard.

May 18, 2017 9 p.m.

Argy says... #23

Calispotato he's sneaky, that Padeem, hiding in the Sideboard.

He's got very limited uses. Mostly comes in versus Control.

May 19, 2017 7:48 a.m.

Calispotato says... #24

Yeah that makes sense, because he is a shield and a magnet of removal.

May 19, 2017 3:17 p.m.

Argy says... #25

Calispotato you get me.
