Liesa, Angel of Death and Staxes

Commander / EDH* WB (Orzhov)

ZaZe18

A Liesa Stax deck that focuses on enforcing fair magic as quickly as possible, wrapping every game action in barbed wire, and closing out with one or two evasive beaters.

Liesa's natural synergy with hard stax pieces like Smokestack and Doom Foretold is undeniable. Forcing your opponents to sacrifice permanents in turn forces them to replace them with new permanents. Liesa's primary ability taxes a player two life for playing their new replacement nonlands, while Ankh of Mishra supplements our strategy by applying the same tax to lands. For generally overzealous and obnoxious decks that would otherwise snowball out of control despite Liesa's absolutely reasonable troll toll of two life, Spirit of the Labyrinth, and your various Rule of Law effects will lock down most common commander strategies, further enforcing fair magic and finally bring balance to your unruly and ungrateful pod.

To further complicate the glorious puzzle that is playing against Stax, the deck runs silver bullets and other secondary Stax pieces that will allow you to tell the frenzied pissants of your play group "Cool your jets." For graveyard decks, Liesa relies on Grafdigger's Cage, Ashes of the Abhorent, and Kunoros. For blink decks, Hushbringer and Hushwing Gryf. For other decks that would present other miscellaneous abominations to your good, Christian table, consult your other silver bullets, such as Containment Priest, Aven Mindcensor, and Cursed Totem.

Finally, the deck looks to drain the life from your pathetic, squirming foes by wrapping what few game actions you so graciously permit in barbed wire, making everything hurt. Drawing cards, playing creatures, slinging spells, attacking, gaining life, and even breathing will hurt. As you whittle down your opponents life totals, your own life total will be offset by Liesa's lifelink. Your win conditions, All That Glitters and Nykthos Paragon, will compliment your gameplay beautifully; Liesa will become immense, gaining your substantially more life, allowing you to play into your own agonizing effects with utter impunity, and your creatures (especially your commander) will be promoted to certified beater status, closing out the game faster than your opponents can say "Who allowed you to pilot such a vile, godless deck?"
