I thought it would be fun to name this Bird Tribal deck after a Hitchcock movie that isn't 'the Birds' and for a card (Murder of Crows) that doesn't appear in this deck.

The original framework I chose to design this deck was basically the best possible version of the perennial classic 'azorius flyers limited deck.' I keep this deck up to date, but not this detail, so follow the updates. Birds and bird-adjacent cards in foil (largely). Keep an eye on the updates section for a longer description of the changes made or following the release of a new set.

Update: 7/20/24: this deck just won for the fourth time in a row (streak!), and for the second time was objectively the weakest of all four. I love this deck and have a real feel for it at all times, but how could you--you're just reading this description for the first time. Here's a broad strokes idea: Early game, toss some birds out and peck feebly, your goal is to help get the table down to alphastrike territory and get some draw going. Mid-game: Accrue some card advantage and keep making land drops, hang onto your counter magic and anthems: let the game come to you. Don't be aggressive, just parry major direct threats and wait for your chance. Late game: preferably wait for heads-up, but when it's time to turn on the jets, get those anthems out you've been holding and watch those 2/2 birds become a surprising potent threat. Muddle the Mixture into a Cyclonic Rift or whatever. You've got this.

The above sounds so basic, right? Where's the skill in piloting a combat-based win? Why not a cool hard-to-interact-with combo? This deck wins the old fashioned way--if you really dig down to your first time trying that azorius flyers archetype in limited on some random FNM in 2007, then you're in the right headspace to just really annoy your friends.

Best paired with: Nelly Furtado's 2000s classic - I'm Like a Bird (when you unveil the deck and on repeat thereafter). Flock of Seagulls - 'I Ran' on victory or elimination

Updates Add

First off: No new birds in Jumpstart or Duskmourn, hence no updates. Let’s travel to the plane of ‘Foundations’ and turn those binoculars skyward, where we got four.

Loose Gravel: Clinquant Skymage this looks like a potential include for that draw-go counters deck in blue that, given how popular this format is, surely exists. That said, even if it were a bird typal, draw-go, counters deck, I’d still put Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker in ahead of this guy. Score 1/10, Status: not added

Footing: Dreadwing Scavenger If it’s in your opening hand, this will help you smooth out those land drops and or cycle through your deck a bit to re-balance your hand (great), if you draw this late, it will be a 3/3 death-toucher that should deter attacks (mid). It’s also not in Kangee’s colors, but judging things is free, so I’ll average the scores for when you cast this creature during a game, and it adds up to...Score: 5/10 or borderline playable, Status: wrong colors!

Concrete slab with wire mesh: Kykar, Zephyr Awakener has my favorite bit of magic art for at least the last 3 sets, which means it will definitely be added to some deck, namely White/Blue Water Raffing, but not this one. I can’t wait to save a creature from removal via a Brainstorm. I do wish it made birds though. It’s a solid card and would make for a fun commander on its own, but with only 16 instants or sorceries in this deck, Kykar will only get to do its thing 16% of the time. If I didn’t have two azorius decks that I love already, I’d strongly consider Kykar II. Score: 9/10, status added…elsewhere!

Superstructure: Strix Lookout Love the glasses. I like this card, but I don’t think it makes the cut like its cousin Harrier Strix did. At 2 CMC it’s battling the likes of Ledger Shredder (good luck), Soulcatcher, Augury Owl, and Watcher of the Spheres. Love the keyword ability of flying and vigilance, but Miner's Guidewing has both at 1 cmc, so that’s our baseline in 2024 (inflation is real). The guidewing also has a relevant ability late in tapping down a creature, which the lookout does not despite doubling the mana cost. Score: 4/10, not added, but it’s somewhat close.
