Enchantment (1)

Artifact (1)

Creature (1)

I first built this deck back in December of 2019. My inspiration came following a budget commander league my friends and I put on for the block set Dominaria. At the time of release, the knight subtype had almost no support with the exception of some really below average creatures out of Mirage block

My goal was to build a Boros commander deck that could go FAST. Kill an opponent on turn 4 Fast. As with all my decks, there would be no fast mana, no infinite combos, and no Sol Ring! My focus was on building strong synergies to get the maximum value out of my low-value creatures.

The deck was surprisingly consistent and unsurprisingly aggressive. My friends at The Trinisphere did a deck tech on a variation they constructed using Syr Gwyn instead, but maintaining a lot of the core components of my original build.

Strategy

The strategy is to go fast!

As is the goal of all Red decks, turn your creatures sideways. When in doubt... RED ZONE! The deck has always maintained a very high concentration of 1- and 2-drop cards. This has also been one of the deck's biggest issues.

Just because a card costs 1 mana, doesn't mean it's a 1-drop. Fervent Champion is a 1-drop, and one of the best 1-drops in the whole deck. Tithe is NOT a 1-drop. You do not play tithe on turn 1, or rather you don't play it for full value on turn 1. You play it later on in the game... when you need to find a plains, resolve a shuffle effect, or maybe just 2 for 1 (which is particularly difficult in Red and White).

A lot of the changes that have been made over the years have been centered around maximizing efficiency. I don't really care if a card costs 1-mana if I don't Want to play it on turn 1. Student of Warfare is a great example of this. Student of Warfare costs 1-mana, it's a creature (subtype knight Yay!), and fills multiple points of the curve. A lot of people look at this card as a 1-mana 3/3 with first strike, or even a 1-mana 4/4 with double strike, but it's not. It is a 3-mana 3/3 with first strike, or an 8-mana 4/4 with double strike. Student of Warfare, like other cards with the Level Up mechanic works well in a slow deck when you have nothing better to do with your mana.

As I said at the start, the name of the game is GO FAST! Lots of cheap creatures and mana-reducers.

Combos and Synergies

Starting with the commanders: Sylvia Brightspear and Khorvath Brightflame

Sylvia gives dragons you (and your team) control double strike. A core theme of the deck is having the ability to give your creatures Changeling (they are all creature types in addition to their own).

Khorvath gives knights you (and your team) control flying and haste. The most important part of any aggro deck is its ability to deal damage to opponents. Khorvath gives the team evasion and speed. By the time your opponents have put their walls up you're ready to fly right over them.

Changelings Amorphous Axe Runed Stalactite Mutavault Universal Automaton Valiant Changeling

The idea here is these cards have all creature types or can give the equipped creature all creature types. These cards are essential to the strategy and allow you to punch for massive amounts of damage very early in the game. These creatures get huge buffs with type-specific anthems like Crucible of Fire and often get overlooked because there are many different creature types on the board at any given time and rarely do they ALL have changeling.

Descent of the Dragons

One of the reasons I love this deck is because I get to relive the Khans of Tarkir block standard days. Board stalls happen often in Commander. Khorvath usually paves the way to victory, but occasionally you need an alternative win-condition.

The combo is Dragon Tempest, Descent of the Dragons, and a bunch of knights (or really whatever creatures you have on the board). Cast Descent of the Dragons targeting all your creatures, or whichever ones you want to turn into dragons. When Descent of the Dragons resolves you will have X 4/4 flying dragons enter the battlefield, at the same time, giving you X Dragon Tempest triggers. With 5 targets, Dragon Tempest deals 20 damage to any target and each of your 4/4 flying dragons gains haste until end of turn.
