FolkOccult on Cathars of Innistrad

You're not wrong, though with cards like Hanweir Militia Captain  Flip blending in to the Cathar churches to recruit cultists, Eldritch Evolution depicting the horror of Emrakul's arrival, I kept Growth Spasm which is a Zendikar set card, only because of its eldrazi involvement, and that it looks eerily similar to Deathbonnet Sprout  Flip in the center of the artwork. I've made this deck entirely, foils, pre releases, alt arts; and found for the sake of functioning, with the necessity of ramp and draw for the table's I play at, I permitted Tarkir cards like Shamanic Revelation and Inspiring Call because they happened to be printed in the pre-con, but serve little to no use lore wise, sadly. I wish every set was treated like the warhammer commanders, with every card sporting a specific art to the theme of the plane.

I took out Entreat the Angels for Increasing Devotion in favor of humans; wanting the deck to very much be human focused, that being that rise and downfall of most of Innistrad. Cults within churches, Mikaeus, the Lunarch being one of the first humans to turn corrupt for the likes of evil.

I find Cryptolith Rite a suitable spell as it shows what fear drove humans to do, due to Nahiri, the Harbinger and her personal grudge. The cards I really want to get rid of, if I had Innistrad arts and watermarks to just swap with that'd be even better, but due to lore-specific conflicts; Shamanic Revelation (shaman of Tarkir), Unbreakable Formation (Azorius Guildmates from Ravnica) , Inspiring Call (Khans of Tarkir), Worldly Tutor (Yisan of Shandalar, but as a wandering bard... he might have made it Innistrad, the centipede in his card looks the same as what's been printed in Innistrad for sure), Wild Beastmaster (depicting a Selesnya guild member), Growth Spasm feels more akin to this deck's lore and flavor, seeing as Nahiri brought Eldrazi to the plane, and it getting an Innistrad watermark makes it feel a bit more at home, but were I to intentionally make this a Sigardian (good) humans only deck, I'd switch Cryptolith with Fork in the Road, and Growth Spasm with Reclusive Taxidermist or Avacyn's Pilgrim, Descend upon the Sinful with Terminus, Mikaeus, the Lunarch with Hamlet Captain, Wild Beastmaster with Mentor of the Meek; and several other cards, but the power just isn't there. I had this deck kitted out similarly and against my table, without some leeway for proper play, it bricks if I don't hit any ramp.

Sorry if that sounded preachy, your suggestion is 1000% solid, though I'd slot it in with a different card for the CMC to not vary too much, then replace Cryptolith Rite with another ramp spell so that I'm not missing any slots that could otherwise be used, hell, it still bugs me that I have Moonsilver Key and Avacyn, Angel of Hope who is canonically dead and then some, in the same deck. If you look at my Halana and Alena, Totally Just Roommates and In memory of the Weatherlight. these conflicts in lore occur quite a bit, similarly with my Sacrificial Splicer deck, much to my chagrin; but due to these constraints I find myself having quite a lot of fun building around this challenge when conceptualizing the deck itself.

I just wish some cards that would otherwise be integral to certain strategies had artworks to compliment the commander's they're most often used for, Thornbite Staff & Atla Palani, Nest Tender is a big one for myself, if it had a reprint, it'd be fairly harmless with Sun Empire-specific artwork. Or Impact Tremors that actually has Krenko, Mob Boss's goblins on it. Ashnod's Altar given alternate art that changes its name and makes the art specific to certain lore would be a dream of mine. But that's why we have alts I suppose, and commissioning one isn't the worst, but the wait sure can be murder on your sanity.

There aren't really that many Human-Zombie positive interactions. Angels and Spirits might be better, with cards like Dearly Departed, Angelic Overseer, and Herald of War. Adding green gives you a couple different options for Sigarda, as well as Hamlet Captain and Survivors' Bond, among others.

If you want to stick with Humans and Zombies, I would suggest going or for additional options.

I'll partially agree with DeinoStinkus that this keyword doesn't seem necessary as a keyword. I mean down the line it's a net gain to refer to combat-specific triggers as a keyword, but unless it gets evergreen or evergreen-like, I don't see the point. It needs to be on the level of Landfall to make much sense.

I had a section about the dangers of a mechanic that shares a generic trigger but is bound to a certain function - like Duelist seems to be for the benefit of the Duelist creature or its controller, but there are creatures like Hamlet Captain and Savvy Hunter which doesn't seem to flavorfully fit the duelist function despite sharing its trigger.

Omnath, Locus of the Roil doesn't have landfall printed on it, but most will call it landfall when explaining it.

Another thing is; I absolutely have to disagree about the name. A duel emphasizes the combat between two individuals. Actually it goes as far as being an arranged fight between two individuals with matched weapons. If you include more people it is a skirmish or on a larger scale a battle. Additionally you want to reward attacks that doesn't necessarily have to be blocked, which doesn't result in a duel (or skirmish). This doesn't seem like a duelist perspective, unless you're figuring the attacking creature duels the player/planeswalker it attacks, who are helpless to actually defend themselves.

If it was me, I would focus on the act of taking action, because that is what this mechanic checks for. If your creature is engaged in combat, they are either attacking or blocking. If not, they are passive. From that place of logic, you could call it Initiative or Take Action. You could derive the name from a mindset or characteristic that thrives in combat/conflict, like Battlelust, Combatant, Fighter, Aggression (aggression seems more like an attacker but a defender can just as well be aggressive and seek out a fight).

I would change out Heron's Grace Champion and Banisher Priest as they don't search or seem as critical as some of the others. Mikaeus, the Lunarch is kinda slow I would consider Ulvenwald Tracker as for its cost its kinda mean. You seems to have alot of + power/Toughness effects and without a reliable sacrifice outlet you may not get much use out of Mirror Entity , although Saffi Eriksdotter I think is still a VERY good add with Angel of Glory's Rise or Sun Titan and more so if you add Altar of Dementia for unlimited mill. Don't know how I missed this but Serra Ascendant , its on theme with the angels and is a scary one drop I would replace Hamlet Captain for it.

I do not know your meta but I think a better swap for Spear of Heliod is Lifecrafter's Bestiary as it helps you power through rough games by helping to keep your hand full and filtering your draws.

So, I've spent the last few days tweaking the deck to lover the mana curve a little, add more utility spells and a few board clears that don't totally wreck my own board state. The last few changes I'm considering before sleaving this up and playing are to add in Yisan, the Wanderer Bard in place of Banisher Priest of Hamlet Captain and bringing in Ulvenwald Tracker in place of Avacyn's Pilgrim or Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip.

I like Aether Vial as a card and think it is worth a slot, however, in the latest modern protour if you look at the results the Collected Company variants actually placed overall better than the Vial lists for 5c Humans. I'm not saying you need to run a list similar to that, however, it does make sense. Drawing a CoCo on turn 4 or 5 is amazing, where as a Vial is just plain depressing... something to keep in mind.

One card that I do think you need somewhere in the deck is Dryad Militant. I get that she isn't a human, but she looks like on and she is very anti-control/Snapcaster Mage decks.

I understand the price barrier, but Noble Hierarch would help the aggressive nature of this deck. If you goldfish with her for a while, you should feel the power she holds as that one point of damage every turn adds up quick.

I see it is in your sideboard, so I won't say too much but Tireless Tracker also holds a ton of power. Drawing is a fun thing in magic.

All in all, I'd probably flip out the Gather the Townsfolk for CoCo, Hamlet Captain for Tireless Tracker, take out the Warden of the First Tree for one extra Thali and lastly add in a few copies of Dryad Militant in place of maybe... Mardu Woe-Reaper since that cards seems the weakest fo all the cards in the deck.

I like the build and the idea, but that is just my suggestions for it.

Also, Riders of Gavony is a cute card to consider. Best of luck!

More Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, less Hamlet Captain. That slows down deaths shadow decks quite well, as they run very little land, and many cheap spells. Also, consider either Aether Vial or Collected Company. Both are good at putting your guys into play, without paying fair amounts of mana. Could also consider exchanging Mardu Woe-Reaper for Thraben Inspector - that card draw can be important.

Soldier of the Pantheon seems like a sideboard card - not every day you need that kind of lifegain.

Squirrelbacon I like the suggestions. I may do a little experimenting with the Abzan humans using your recommendations. It seems easy enough to just alter the creature base to accommodate the tribe. Hopefully, they synergize and anthem as well. I like cards like Doomed Traveler and Hamlet Captain. Thanks!
