My Grimoire Likes Babbling Spells

Commander / EDH*

Ravenrose

My babbling grimoire, Codie, is a hit or miss with the Hogwarts staff, my fellow Slytherins and of course, the people who sit at a table with my adorable grimoire who uses his stand as legs. I jest of course, but I genuinely wanted to make a deck based entirely on Harry Potter universe spells and Codie was the perfect Commander for it; how could someone not pick this adorable sentient grimoire for it?!

Of course, I put in a few permanent spells such as mana stones for some extra mana, more out of habit than anything else. Cursed Mirror felt like the Mirror of Erised in a way - especially since the Mirror had the ability to make someone lose themselves and possibly forget to live. Letter of Acceptance is an obvious one; everyone remembers the moment Harry got his letter from Hogwarts. I felt that Falthis and Vega represented Hedwig and Crookshanks, as well as stereotypical witch's familiars in general and I could not really resist putting them in. If I find another instant or sorcery that fits into my theme very well, it is likely they will be taken out. Adrix and Nev reminded me of Fred and George Weasley, thus I felt they should be put in for now. Elixir of Immortality needs no explanation I think - based on the solution that comes from the Philosopher's Stone, created by Nicholas Flamel.

School related spells have also been put in for obvious reasons: First Day of Class, Perplexing Test, Brainstorm, Body of Research, Pop Quiz, and Compulsive Research - especially in the case of Hermione Granger.

The spells were rather fun to match. Memory Deluge reminds me of Legilimency and its effects - seeing other people's memories, feeling their emotions and using that to one's advantage. It also fits rather well with memories put into a Pensieve. Mortality Spear may be the most obvious choice for Avada Kedavra, the Unforgiveable Killing Curse. Speaking of Unforgiveables, I thought Rip Apart was fitting for the Cruciatus Curse, the torture curse - in both art and name. Because the effects of the curse are so bad they make the victim feel like they are being ripped apart. Inkshield is a form of Protego, specifically Protego horribilis. Wrong Turn is in my mind a perfect example of the Confundus Charm, the charm that causes disorientation and confusion - if you watched the motives, the charm Hermione verbally used on Cormac so he would miss a crucial shot during Quidditch try outs. Swords to Plowshares, Vanishing Verse, Oversimplify and Rite of Oblivion are all examples of Depulso, the Banishing Charm. Worst Fears refer to the effects of the potion Dumbledore had to drink in order to get to the fake Horcrux in the sixth book and movie and the effect of the Boggart. Deflecting Palm is my example of a severe Weakening Hex, and Stupefy. Tendrils of Agony reminds me of Victor Rookwood's curse in Hogwarts Legacy; the one that causes never ending pain and anguish on the person. Mystic Retrieval is another Pensieve reference. Wizard's Retort is a clear reference to the Dark side's invasion of Hogwarts and trying to take down the protective dome around the school. Serpentive Curve reminds me of Voldemort's Fiendfyre snake; Soulfire reminds me of Fiendfyre in general. Fated Infatuation - Merope falling for Riddle Senior, Snape falling for Lily; take your pick. Magma Opus looks like something Fred and George conjured before they left Hogwarts. Summon the School - merfolk reference. Death by Dragon is the first task of the Triwziard Tournament. Fractured Identity and Thought Distortion refers to the Horcrux Creation Rite. Crushing Disappointment - Draco Malfoy's relationship with his father. Temporal Trespass refers to Time Magic and Time Turners.

Explosive Vegetation is surprisingly fitting considering Herbology covers some very dangerous plants. Pongify, Release the Dogs, White Sun's Zenith, Storm Herd, Polymorphist's Jest, Chatterstorm, and Exotic Pets are all in reference to animal Conjuration spells and human transformation spells. Preordain, Silundi Vision, Foresee, Divination and Peek are references to the art of Divination as a whole, since the art has no one concrete spell in the books and movies.

If any of you know any more references, please let me know! I hope you have enjoyed this deck and I am always open to suggestions.
