Umbral Juke

Choose one —

  • Target player sacrifices a creature or planeswalker.
  • Create a 2/1 white and black Inkling creature token with flying.

Umbral Juke isn't great in here. The Inkling token has no special utility or synergy, and paying three mana so the opponent can toss their worst creature is a pretty bad deal. The dream is to cast a Crippling Fear or other boardwipe, then pick off a supercharged planeswalker, but I expect that more often than not you'll be paying three mana to kill a Goblin token or something.

question, should I replace Umbral Juke?

Hello again! You'll probably hear from me fairly frequently, if you don't mind, since you and I are doing the same thing in the same colors, and I'll always be interested in the direction you take your deck. I put my list up here Arena Grixis Control if you'd like to take a look. I've been running it on arena since MID came out and while I miss Kroxa and Sharknado and such, it's still been pretty fun. We've certainly both zeroed in on some of the same new toys; Gisa fits in very nicely, considering how many of our opponents' creatures we'll be zapping every game. Yes, Smoldering Egg  Flip definitely deserves at least 2 slots! In principal, I want to be really minimal with creatures in this scheme and only really want big splashy ones, but the egg just accomplishes so much. Like you said, a 0/4 blocker early game is great to have, especially with all the aggro in the meta right now. It doesn't take too long to spend 7 mana on instants and sorceries and once the egg hatches and each one sends 2 damage anywhere (not to mention it's now a 4/4 flyer) it gets really fun. I'm running a couple copies of Tergrid  Flip because not only do I love how sacrifice removal like Soul Shatter and Umbral Juke (plus Totally not Liliana's -3) gets around both hexproof and indestructible (screw you, Toski), but I've had other folks drain me out with Tergrid's Lantern and thought "Hey, that's just mean enough to want to do myself". I hadn't really considered Lier; getting access to all the instants and sorceries in the graveyard is definitely great, but a lot of games have hinged on countering the right spell at the right time and I wouldn't want her taking that chance away. I still definitely recommend Xanathar, and would also encourage throwing at least 1 copy of Hall of Storm Giants in (it's proven really invaluable as both a threat when the battlefield is clear but I'm top decking for a closeout bomb, and as a nice fat blocker if the opponent has managed to keep some stuff). If there was one card I'd strongly recommend that perhaps you hadn't considered though, it's Geistflame Reservoir. Getting it out on turn 3, it doesn't take many turns before it's capable of doing a considerable amount of damage to any target for just 2 mana. Plus it can help dig through the library if necessary. I've loved it and will likely slot in a second one at some point. Anyway, that's probably enough for now. Enjoy your Grixising!

Hello again,

Looks like you already got some fine suggestions from razelfark, but I might have a few other ideas.

I think Elite Spellbinder should go straight in the main deck. It's never a dead card and fits with your flying theme. It has a nice ETB that's still underrated and it would pair well with Nightmare Shepherd too.

Killian, Ink Duelist Seems like a good 2 drops but it's a bit annoying that he's legendary. If you decide to run Elite Spellbinder (or if you're used to the meta) you could consider mixing in a few Silverquill Silencer . It's always good to make your opponent not want to cast the 1 spell that you expect them to play to ruin your day, and even if Silverquill Silencer only trigger onces, it's still a 3/2 for 2 that drew a card and gained 3 life.

You could probably add maybe like 2 Plumb the Forbidden . You do have some creatures you don't mind sacrificing like Eyetwitch , Inkling Summoning , extra Killian, Ink Duelist , and it's always great to use in response to removal, especially board wipes. Could also be used to trigger Nightmare Shepherd when you see fit, or to get a surprise lethal attack on something that went unblocked with Shadewing Laureate .

One of the big upside of the Lesson cards is that they give you a bunch of options to chose from. If I was you I would remove an Umbral Juke and add a Pest Summoning because you never know when you'll want 2 blockers or creatures to sacrifice, that gains life.

End finally, Dramatic Finale could be a interesting fit since it creates flying tokens on top of boosting them, and that would include the ones from Nightmare Shepherd too.

Cheers!

Like the simple concept you are trying to run. Some ideas for replacing the Shadewing Laureate since you are not sure how well it is working out for you.

Eyetwitch is a small early flier that can get you some spells from your side deck like Inkling Summoning to replace the body, Expanded Anatomy for some pump aggression that gets cheaper if you have Killian, Ink Duelist on the board, or Mascot Exhibition if the game got dragged out and you have a lot of mana. You are allowed up to seven slots in a side deck for best of one situations for lessons if you are interested.

Order of Midnight is a nice cheap flier for aggro with a downside of not being able to block, but can be used to bring back some of your creatures you may have lost earlier in the fight to give you extra momentum back into some games.

Nighthawk Scavenger would work well if you are looking for something in the same 3 drop slot for an option. This card can sometimes run away with games because of its flying lifelink body that can get larger as the game goes.

Umbral Juke is a spell option that you can consider if you are looking for an instant speed flier option that can be used as non-targeted removal. This can be good in the matchups against red/blue control decks that rely on dragons or giants. This is more a side deck option then a main board.

A spell you may want to consider for the deck (sideboard at least) is Humiliate . This card can be used to rip the sweepers or troublesome cards from your opponents hand while offering a permanent boost to a creature you might have in play.

Tried to suggest flying options to go with the theme you seem to have. Hope these suggestions proved helpful. Best of luck with your deck.
