Replaced some more cards: Gitaxian Probe for Stormtide Leviathan and Reach Through Mists for Windreader Sphinx
jaskamakkara, 11 years ago
Switched out Ranger's Guile for Gods Willing as I think it will offer more utility. Also swapped the Nyxborn Shieldmate for Hopeful Eidolon to get some early-game lifelink in. Also added some suggested cards to sideboard for testing.
Switching from Modern to Standard
knight1, 11 years ago
This deck was previously modern, but I decided to try to make it standard. So I made many changes.
-4 Condemn for +4 Celestial Flare
-2 Gitaxian Probe for +1 Azorius Charm and +1 Swan Song
-2 Mana Leak for +2 Render Silent
-2 Runechanter's Pike for +2 Anger of the Gods
-4 Surrakar Spellblade for +4 Young Pyromancer
-4 Serra Avenger for +1 Guttersnipe and +3 Banisher Priest
I'm also going to try to make this deck competitive, so I'll be making more changes.
Suggestions are appreciated

Adjustment prior to Standard Night

Hey all, made a few changes based on recent metagame at my shop.
Vraska the Unseen was traded, so she's gonna be benched tonight. Have a new shiny duel decks version in the mail.
Gonna see how it plays out.

Completely Changed the deck to a Voltron deck. using Zedruu as my commander i can donate the auras on her to other players, gaining her ability, and still having the aura's affect on her.

Only 16 cards over 100! Thanks for all the help so far guys.

I made one slight change to the sideboard, taking out two Brave the Elements for two Thalia, Guardian of Thrabens. I found that Blue Red or Blue White Red Control decks are the main source of worry this deck - hence Thalia.

he first list didn't seem to perform so well for the price of it all, I saw DailyMTG's Monogreen Budget Devotion Deck and thus I tailored this to be more budget, I am not sure which is better the DailyMTG's Experiment One or the Badgers I run in here there have been times I've been playing on MTGO where I had kinda wished the Badger was an Experiment One, but there have been time when I won the game because it was the badger. The Savage Summoning has worked out great flashing in Reverent Hunter at the end of my opponents turn as well as against Control Decks.
Do I dump the build and go a while new way?
Apoptosis, 11 years ago
I'm considering dumping this build in favor of a W/G lifegain build. Remember the goal of the build was on the white core of Brimaz, Archangel of thune, Elspeth, and Angel of Serenity. Green gives me access to Voice (synergizes with tokens), ramp, Courser, and a lot of appealing possibilities. What do you think? Chime in and let me know. Clearly something needs to change and the question is whether the B/W/r is forcing a square peg into a round hole.
A Bad Night of Magic is still better then

Official Record to date: Matches: 3-4-1 W/L: 8-9
A bad night of Magic is still better then a good day of... well, you tell me. It was a disappointing outing last night going 1-2-1 in Matches and 4-6 in games. The adjustments I made clearly didn't work the way I had hoped. In short, I believe the deck is well suited against a control matchup, but still suffers against aggro. Another overhaul is in order while I find the right build, but for now here's last night's breakdown:
Match 1 draw versus budget esper (1-1-1)
This was a budget deck that features Eslpeth and Ashiok. I won a long drawn out game one (almost 35 minutes). Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver was a real scare, exiling a number of fatties, but I resolved Underworld Connections, which allowed solid card draw. whip of erebors gained me crazy life. The only card he stole was an Archangel of Thune, but he only attacked with her when he had tokens on the board. I timely Celestial Flare really broke the stalemate. I was able to swing the board for good after whipping back Angel of Serenity and resolving my own Archangel of Thune/elsepth, sun's champion. I won with 8 cards left in my library, but at 48 life. Game 2 I sided out some of my fatties and brought in my anti-control sideboard, but an early Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver was able to steal a Blood Baron of Vizkopa before I could Slaughter Games Ashiok away. Game 3 went to turns with me in control. Oh well.
Match 2 versus Win-a-taurs 2-1
Game one he drops 4 minotaurs in one turn, but I have Boros Reckoner in play, another in hand, and a Hero's Downfall. I lost because I mistook the one in play for the one that give +2 to attack but it was the one that gives all of his minotaurs +1/+1, so I misplayed the 2nd Boros Reckoner instead of the kill spell. Games 2 and 3 blur a bit, in one game he mulls to 5 and runs into Thoughtseize T1, T2, T3. The other game he's mana screwed but I'm land flooded. Eventually, I get Archangel of Thune/Elspeth, Sun's Champion/Blind Obedience going and the +1/+1 counters onto tokens gets ridiculous quickly.
Match 3 versus B/w Devotion 0-2
Worst match of the night, I get blown out game 1. Game two I get stuck on 2 lands until T4 (but did hang in with 2 Devour Flesh), forcing me to put a 2nd Boros Reckoner onto the field (despite holding Wear / Tear that was meant for his bident. A Detention Sphere ends it. Very disappointing. Fliers are a problem.
Match 3 versus Red devotion/RDW/aggro 1-2
I win game 1 after she's stuck on two land and I stabilize. I bring in removal, lower my curve, and it's not enough in either game. Almost stabilized Game 3, but my anti-aggro package isn't enough. She sided in 4x Mizzium Mortars, which won her both games by nailing the guys I needed to stabilize.
Thoughts on the night. The deck needs retooling. I think matchups against control are fair, but I struggle against fast aggro and decks that can swarm out a lot of creatures.
Cards that don't work consistently enough
1. Banisher Priest: a 2/2 eat a kill spell and not save me from aggro isn't working. He gets the axe for sure. Fiendslayer Paladin is a logical choice: lifegain and avoids removal.
2. Thoughtseize Ok, it's great against control or for removing a kill spell, but I need to protect my creatures better. I'm thinking since I have bombs, I would rather have Brave the Elements or Boros Charm. I need to keep my guys alive. Thoughtseize just isn't very good against decks that don't care, like blue devotion or aggro decks.
3. Kill spells. Mizzium Mortars in the mainboard is worthwhile over some of my removal. More Hero's Downfall or perhaps Dreadbore (since my 3 CMC slot is jammed).
4. Blind Obedience in the mainboard at 1x. I lowered it to 1x in the sideboard, but that's a mistake. One mainboard, one sideboard.
5. Wraths. I want to try to work both down in sorrow and Anger of the Gods into the deck.
6. Lower CMC creatures. I feel like I need something that I can drop T1/T2 Soldier of the Pantheon is the obvious choice: it dodges some removal and can trigger lifegain via Archangel of Thune. But there is crappy looking card called Dutiful Thrull that appeals to me: it's an annoying little tempo card that can stand in the way of early aggro and can survive the more common wraths. Will it make the cut? I doubt it, but he's on my radar screen.

Replacement

The sideboard are cards that I'm looking to add (need to acquire) and the maybe-board are cards that I'll pull for the new ones.

Maindeck: -4x frontline medic +3x fiendslayer paladin +1x brimaz, king of oreskos -2x precinct captain +2x soldier of the pantheon Sideboard: -3x fiendslayer paladin +3x banisher priest Finally got a third Brimaz! Also decided that I sideboard in Fiendslayer Paladin enough for it to earn a spot in the maindeck. It works with archangel of thune, is a 2/2 first strike lifelink, and gives two devotion. That gives one more devotion than Frontline Medic, which was not nearly as effective as I thought it would be. As a result, the frontline medics were removed and Brimaz and Fiendslayers were added. As much as I love precinct captain, it is not super versatile and often just gets blocked. Great aggro against a control deck though. I think going half and half with soldier of the pantheon is a better option. It gets in as a one drop to be aggresive against control, and better yet cannot be detention sphered. If I get any more soldier of the pantheons, it is likely they will replace all of the precinct captains. Moving fiendslayer left open three slots. Banisher priest was a solid option that I had available. Pithing needle or judges familiar also solid options, but currently not available to me.

Mainboard: -4 Plains +4 Temple of Triumph Sideboard: -3 Renounce the guilds +3 Boros Charm 1-2. Lost horribly to esper control in many situations. Removed renounced the guilds from sideboard and added boros charms to give greater consistency to drawing insurance against supreme verdict. Added temple of triumphs to cast them. Also I have no one drops and scrying is great.

More Threats!
Hootiequack, 11 years ago
So my playtesting to date has shown me some fun things this deck can do, but unfortunately, I couldn't consistently pull enough threats to keep the pressure on in enough games. So, I pulled Boon Satyr and Kiora's Follower, added another Polukranos, World Eater and mainboarded the two Arbor Colossus and a Clan Defiance. I found the followers weren't often needed for ramp and just weren't enough of a threat. To fill the space in the sideboard, Anger of the Gods. Especially against aggro decks.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I really hope i do okay at the first Modern event which is in a week or two.

Swapped out brass herald for platinum emperion, emperion is just a bigger threat and better at giving me a chance to win the game either by recklessly swinging or making my life total fixed allowing me all the time i need to find my colossus and as my group meta runs alot of spot removal giving emperion the greaves just means mill or infect to win.
