30 Card Decks For New Players

Casual* Budget Casual Five Color Theme/Gimmick

Sideboard

These are basic 30 card decks meant to give new magic players a taste of each of the five colors. Each deck includes 11 lands, an artifact, and an enchantment. I am still working on the blue list as the computer I had it saved on died on me. All decks can be played against each-other and then the player can pick his or her two favorites and combine them smashup style for a complete deck experience. Other than that I just tried to include a variety of cards and abilities that I felt encapsulated the feel of the color and that would provide a fair and fun experience.

The Rules

  1. Cards must be splashable. (a.k.a. 50% or more of any cards mana cost must be basic colorless mana, unless it is a 1 drop.)

  2. No rares, cards must have been printed at common or uncommon at some point to qualify (this is my least stringent rule and may change if I find suitable cards, or may add 1 to each deck)

  3. Each card must be $1 or less and preferably the bulk of them under a quarter (.25 U.S) There are a few cards I preferred slightly but no point in breaking the bank for a teaching tool.

This is a work in progress and many things may change but for now this is what I have come up with. I may add a description of why included each card eventually but for now it is too much work haha. If you have any suggestions or like the lists be sure to let me know thanks!

Updates Add

Two quick things and then onto some possible card swaps for my lists. I forgot to mention it above but Juggernaut goes in the green deck and Perilous Myr goes in the red deck. Just ran the 4 decks through TCGPLAYERS optimizer and it was ~$20. That is $5 a deck (10 if you mix 2) or about 25 cents per non-land card.

Optional Inclusions:

  1. Ultimate Price instead of Doom Blade, I was originally going to include Go for the Throat so that artifacts couldn't be targeted (to illustrate cards that can't target everything) but saw the price. U P will act as a pseudo in these mono colored decks. Also if you have multiple decks and both players choose black they can both still use it, whereas doomblade would be a dead card.

  2. Grim Roustabout instead of Zombie Scavengers. I kind of like Scavengers better but Roustabout has it's advantages.First it isn't archaic and the wording/card design is much updated, also much easier to find a copy because of this. Second it has you make choices, are you on the offensive or defensive? Third it doesn't rely on situational gamestates to use its ability and teaches you to leave mana open for abilities and since it costs 1 less this will be a little easier.

  3. Fog instead of Elvish Mystic. I just feel like it deserves a green spot and the elf is kindof redundant, which was the point but doesn't add much of a different lesson than the other ramp cards, and is not as good as the others in this deck due to land enchantments.

  4. Quilled Wolf over Kraul Warrior. Quilled is basically a strictly better card from shadows over innistrad. It gets +4/+4 instead of +3/+3

  5. Disenchant instead of Solemn Offering. 1 mana cheaper is the main benefit. I think gaining 4 life on top of the other white cards might make games too long or end by running out of cards in your library. Solemn is a more modern card though and does reinforce the lifegain is white idea so either is probably fine.

  6. Arc Trail instead of Lightning Strike or Searing Spear. Already have two other 2 mana 3 damage instants, this one mixes things up a bit sorcery speed but a lot more options and decisions to make.

  7. Keldon Marauders instead of ????. Not sure what to switch this with but it is a decent card that fits well with the deck.

  8. Cudgel Troll instead of ????. A green regenerate effect would be a nice inclusion and this would make a great target for Incinerate. Plus green could use more things to pump into. Probably trade out for Kraul Warrior or some other 2-3 drop.

  9. Suture Priest instead of Soul Warden. Does mostly the same thing as soul warden but is cheaper money-wise. Can add a win con to the white deck (not sure if this is bad or good might be too powerful). My main issue with it is that it isn't the most white feeling card. Am a little worried that the white deck will become pauper white weenies or a weaker soul sisters/tokens deck both of which might be too much for the other decks to handle. which leads me to...

  10. Ajani's Pridemade instead of ???. Again might just be too good in this situation but does help to show off how a defensive white deck can win. And to...

  11. Nyx-Fleece Ram, Yoked Ox or a wall for ???. Both show off whites defensive prowess, Nyx Fleece is especially cool because most people don't expect attacks with it but you definitely could. And walls because same defense reasons as nyx fleece but also to show off wall mechanics.

Let me know what you think of these swaps or if you have any ideas for cards to add thanks!
