Sideboard

Maybeboard

Tezz Gifts deck inspired by Caleb Durward.

Update: Removed the Thopter-Sword combo and left it in the maybe board. Too often found the pieces to be clunky by themselves.

This deck is really fun to play and has several ways to win. The deck can transition between control and aggro very quickly and is quite flexible in the Modern format.

Key cards and combos:

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas + Inkmoth Nexus can kill in 2 turns with poison.

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas + all the Artifacts in the deck can also kill or come close to it with a Tezz Ultimate. This can happen quite easily with all the control elements in the deck.

Gifts Ungiven + many cards in the deck. Gifts is the main search engine of the deck allowing you to grab board wipes or spot removal when needed. Just keep in mind that you don't have to grab all 4 cards. You can grab 2 and have them hit the graveyard, which is one of the main uses for Gifts as shown in the next two examples.

Gifts Ungiven fetching Iona, Shield of Emeria + Unburial Rites doesn't exactly kill, but often cripples the opponent enough to make winning much easier.

Gifts Ungiven fetching Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite + Unburial Rites also doesn't kill outright, but can just ruin fast aggro decks like Infect. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite 's buff does help bring down your opponents rather quickly once online.

Not in the Deck now, but can easily be added: Gifts Ungiven fetching Sword of the Meek + Thopter Foundry + Crucible of Worlds + Academy Ruins allows us to set up the Thopter-Sword combo no matter what pile we're given. Once online, this combo can generate a lot of life and 1/1 flyers, which can often put the game out of reach.

Other key cards:

Wurmcoil Engine is just a great card all around. It Provides both offense and defense when needed and just happens to be an artifact for old Tezz to work with as well.

Spellskite provides plenty of defense for your planeswalkers and your larger creatures once on board. It also helps break up your opponent's combos and other targeting cards. Also an artifact :)

Talisman of Progress & Azorius Signet help to provide quick and early artifact based ramp, which allows you to hit Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas , Gifts Ungiven , or a board wipe on turn 3.

Thirst for Knowledge provides card draw that is great for this deck. It allows you to pitch some of your Unburial Rites targets if drawn early or in the late game you can just pitch some of the cheap artifacts in the deck. This card is very flexible and provides great value.

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy   is similar to Thirst for Knowledge by giving the ability to dig for key cards while also allowing you to put Unburial Rites targets into the grave. Basically does what Jace does best!

Sideboard

The sideboard still needs some work. Enchantments seems to be giving me more problems as of late, which is why I'm running Detention Sphere as a kind of catch all, flexible removal spell.

Narset Transcendent so far has proven to be quite valuable out of the board against other slow grindy type decks. Her high starting loyalty really helps pad your life total, especially considering how hard it becomes to kill her given all of the removal in the deck. Her +1 doesn't always hit, but adds value when you do and takes her up to 7 immediately, which is incredible when you are in control mode.

. . .

I would love to hear suggestions, especially for better sideboard options.

Thanks!!!
