Thanks for the suggestions. Ive made some changes in line with what was recommended, but ive kept 2 volcanic geysers just to burn them in the face for lethal damage if it gets to late game. Thanks again and any more ideas are welcome :-)

Standard Event

ckdude, 11 years ago

Played in another Standard event today. Here's how it went:

Round 1 vs Jund Midrange: 2 - 0

Played vs this random Jund deck that seemed very unfocused. It had cards like Legion Loyalist, Ghor-Clan Rampager, Savageborn Hydra, and Stormbreath Dragon. I beat it VERY easily 2 - 0 after killing all the things and slapping down an AEtherling. It was relatively unexciting so I'll spare you the details.

Round 2 vs Red Deck Wins: 2 - 0

I was really nervous about this matchup as I have not yet played it and I know it is very difficult for Esper a lot of the time. I lost the dice roll too so that didn't help. He started a hand with no one drop.... whew.... I dropped down to around 5 or 6 life before i resolved a Sphinx's Revelation to secure the victory and the cards I needed to wipe him out. The game ended up going REALLY long as I had to search through 70% of my deck to find my AEtherling/Elspeth, Sun's Champion. He was relatively new to magic and he also didn't scoop very fast. 2nd game I sided in my two Ashiok, Nightmare Weavers and two Soldier of the Pantheon as he was playing Burning-Tree Emissary and Rakdos Cackler. I ended up playing both of them and survived lethal by 1 damage because of their life gain off of 3 Burning-Tree Emissarys. This game I found my AEtherling much faster and sealed the deal. I was definitely glad to be done with Red Deck Wins!........ or was I

Round 3 vs Red Deck Wins... again: 2 - 0

Played another RDW player... just my luck. I started a two land hand with Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, and Sphinx's Revelation. I had 2 earlyish control cards to hold me over. Managed to play 5 lands in a row with the help of scry lands. Dropped Blood Baron of Vizkopa on turn 5 or 6 which resulted in me not dying for long enough to get Elspeth, Sun's Champion out and ulty her. 2nd game I only sided in my Ashiok, Nightmare Weavers as he did not run Burning-Tree Emissary.... I don't know why not. He started a 1 land hand with two 1 drops. I killed one of them and played Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. He focused it for 3 turns after i milled 5 lands (hue) and finally killed it...... then i played Blood Baron of Vizkopa and he scooped. Serves you right Mr. Red deck wins.

4th Round vs Mono Black Devotion: 2 - 0

Once again I was horrified as I have not played this matchup yet and I know it is my worst matchup ever. The first game was VERY long and really interesting. He had a Whip of Erebos out and I had played a turn 5 Blood Baron of Vizkopa. He was not running Pack Rat. He was using Disciple of Phenax and Thoughtseize though for tons of hand disruption. We both dropped to sub-6 life atleast 7 times in the match, especially after I hit the board with AEtherling. I managed to use two Detention Spheres to hit 3 Underworld Connections, but he had already drawn roughly 20 cards from them. I also Syncopate'd a Gray Merchant of Asphodel which was huge. I ended up having to use Supreme Verdict to keep his devotion down early even though I was only hitting single Lifebane Zombies with them. I ended up outlasting him and finishing him with AEtherling/Blood Baron of Vizkopa after he made me sacrifice my first Blood Baron of Vizkopa. 2nd Game I played another early Blood Baron of Vizkopa. He got stuck at 4 mana but had an Underworld Connections out to give him extra cards. He continued to out card advantage me but he only had 4 mana. He had 2 Gray Merchant of Asphodels in his hand. I was just top decking at this point while beating him down with Blood Baron of Vizkopa. I top decked a Dissolve the turn he drew his 5th land. He knew it too but he was at 4 life and had to go for it. I Dissolve'd it to seal the deal and the 4 - 0!

Reset Comments

Araganor, 11 years ago

I decided to clean up the comments, a lot of them were for an outdated version of the deck. I'm still taking suggestions for improvements to the deck!

rkreutz, 11 years ago

Removed the Gods since my Devotion to a color other than Green is pathetic. Replaced them with the Emotions and altered the mana base again to make it more consistent.

Tenacious D + bubbling cauldron = +4 life per turn for 3 mana Tenacious D + undercity informer = mill whoever for a land for 3 mana Sac outlet + Gary + whip= insta kill for 5 mana? ( might have to swing with Steven or one of his friends for the kill)

Following (some of) the advice of aaronmaxley on here; removal of Chained to the Rocks from the sideboard -1 Door of Destinies -1 Phantom General -1 Sundering Growth (keeping 2 for anti ratchet bomb due to high use at my local FNM) -1 Banisher Priest -1 Fencing Ace

As I'm also including enchantments in this deck, +2 Phalanx Leader and the removal of 1x Fabled Hero to accommodate this... kind of.

Replaced 3x Raging Goblin with 3x Legion Loyalist.

changes

i originally had it at 20 lands but i wanted to make it more consistent to get to the 3 lands, so i added another island. not sure if that was the right call yet as the heavy red for the burn might call for a mountain . I'll play test it a little more and see. Also was thinking of adding curiosity as a little redundancy for the combo as the guttersnipe already has some in the form of gelectrode but tandem lookout does not. it might make it easier to cast more spells on turn 4 instead too. any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well :)

I did some more playtesting and I feel like adding two more Desecration Demon and removing 2x Opportunity from the main are ways to go. I have played against mono blue and mono black much these last days and think that I'm not able to cast Opportunity anyway unless I'm already winning. Also I realised that Nightveil Specter is quite important in both of those match ups and therefor I sided more of them.

Now held by: Wodar - Sorrow and Courser would both be good choices. 2 - DB345 Bow of Nylea - Pick 2 by Wodar Artisan's Sorrow Fanatic of Mogis - Pick 1 by Deckbuilder345 Karametra Acolyte - Pick 7 by Actiontech Vanquish the Foul - Pick 3 by Deco_y Agent of Horizons - Pick 8 by GureiSeion Battlewise Valor Defend the Hearth Fleetfeather Sandals Guardians of Meletis Ill-Tempered Cyclops - Pick 4 by Absinthman Prescient Chimera Ray of Dissolution - Pick 6 by Goody Vaporkin - Pick 5 by Euphonatron Mountain Not sure they're going to make good use of that card. Would have preferred Artisan. Now held by: Deckbuilder345 - Battlewise Valor, probably. 3 - Gurei Reaper of the Wilds - Pick 1 by GureiSeion Battlewise Hoplite Evangel of Heliod - Pick 7 by Goody Sealock Monster - Pick 6 by Euphonatron Breaching Hippocamp Fellhide Minotaur Fleetfeather Sandals Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 3 by Wodar Ill-Tempered Cyclops - Pick 5 by Absinthman Prescient Chimera - Pick 8 by Actiontech Scholar of Athreos - Pick 4 by Deco_y Silent Artisan Titan's Strength Traveling Philosopher - Pick 2 by Deckbuilder345 Swamp Yes, good call. Really? This over the wonderful Chimera? Now held by: Goody - Priest is in-color, but I'd hate the annoying Cure, which is strong against the deck they have. 6 - Euphonatron Abhorrent Overlord - Pick 4 by GureiSeion Dissolve - Pick 1 by Euphonatron Peak Eruption Witches' Eye Agent of Horizons - Pick 3 by Actiontech Akroan Crusader - Pick 8 by Absinthman Cavalry Pegasus - Pick 5 by Deckbuilder345 Crackling Triton Defend the Hearth Messenger's Speed Mnemonic Wall Observant Alseid - Pick 2 by Goody Portent of Betrayal - Pick 7 by Deco_y Traveler's Amulet - Pick 6 by Wodar Forest Ok. I would rather have March than hate that card. Maybe they're thinking about that green splash. Now held by: Absinthman - Nothing here is good. I'd hate March of the Returned. 8 - Deco_y Abhorrent Overlord - Pick 1 by Deco_y Hunt the Hunter Purphoros's Emissary - Pick 2 by Absinthman Satyr Piper - Pick 8 by Wodar Agent of Horizons - Pick 5 by Actiontech Akroan Crusader - Pick 4 by Goody Crackling Triton Defend the Hearth Gods Willing - Pick 7 by Deckbuilder345 Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 6 by GureiSeion Last Breath Messenger's Speed Prescient Chimera (foil) - Pick 3 by Euphonatron Spark Jolt Mountain Hm. I think I'd rather have the Hunt the Hunter; probably not going to run the Piper, I think. But we'll see. Now held by: Deco_y - Last Breath seems clearly best.

Changes

GeoKinetic, 11 years ago

Made a couple of changes to the deck, i dropped the number of Mistcutter Hydra, and completely dropped Arbor Colossus and Ruric Thar, the Unbowed. Added 2 Voyaging Satyr, 4 Deadbridge Goliath and a 2nd Polukranos, World Eater. Also cleaning up the comments.
