went 2-2 last night and won every game in which I started with at least 2 lands and a otherworld atlas. So the only problem I had was being consistent without it. Will be making many changes for next week

Nuking comments. Sadly, I've fallen ill so I didn't go to FNM. No testing done.. :(
Doing too much
blazinazian, 12 years ago
So I took a good look at my deck and did some playtests and I felt that I was trying to do too much with sacrificing for damage and re-animate for lifegain. I decided that I will mainly focus on lifegain and get huge creatures for damage.
Therefore, I took out Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord because he won't fit into my deck's goals and substituted him for Disciple of Bolas.
I feel like I want to fully utilize my deck by hardcasting my creatures and then generate the tokens as a backup. That's why I feel that I should take out Lotleth Troll and put in Armada Wurm and Angel of Serenity. Please let me know if my decision is right or not.
As always, any and all help is appreciated.

Need suggestions!
FTR, 12 years ago
I need some suggestions for creatures to put in this deck to replace the Sewer Shamblers and possibly Skullbriar, the Walking Grave. They're both pretty much there for cannon fodder but if I could get something more useful there it would be nice.
I've also found myself with too much mana and nothing to do with it (due to health not being low enough, bad draws, etc.) so any alternate win-cons or big drops would be nice. I've tried Exsanguinate and I may put it back in but it kills my Death's Shadows and usually doesn't do enough damage to be lethal.

So after playtesting for the last week or so, this has risen to the top as my favorite deck to play. It's absolutely nasty versus everything so far. I can't really find a real weakness. What I end up doing the majority of the time is bouncing my own Talrand, Sky Summoner back to my own hand and creating 2/2 drakes that way just to keep him from getting killed off. Skymark Roc is way more useful than I thought he would be, and Lyev Skyknight allows me a lock down on enchants/artifacts that end up hitting the board. Any suggestions or questions I could field on this deck would be awesome. Thanks for viewing.

Won yet another FNM!!!
Sebastes, 12 years ago
It had been a while since I went to a FNM but I was able to go today and this deck took first no problem. too tired to write about the matchups, but I went undefeated for 3 rounds then drew in the final round, taking first place. It is a very solid build super straight forward so anyone can play it and quickly start winning all the time. Try out a hand or playtest, I'm sure you will like what you see. Please continue to comment and +1. I appreciate it, thanks!

Well I added the 3x Terminus and 2x Supreme Verdict and for a second win condition I added 2x Psychic Spiral. I play tested it last night at FNM and was 3 wins and 1 loss, getting me in the top 5 players that evening. I was wondering if there are any other suggestions that might help make this deck nigh unstoppable. Feel free to critique.

Round 1 vs Azorius Detain (1/0/0) -- Once he ran out of detain I just kept the pressure up with Garruk, Primal Hunter and Desecration Demon both games... and easy 2-0.Round 2 vs. Selesnya Midrange (2/0/0) -- He got mana flooded Game 1, so Garruk, Primal Hunter got there, and Game 2, Desecration Demon got there because he only had one creature to play. Another 2-0.
Round 3 vs. 4-Color Reanimator (3/0/0) -- The guy misplayed Game 1 by playing (then flashing back) Lingering Souls, and I promptly Sever the Bloodline-d the tokens. I proceeded to stomp him. Game 2, I just got there faster than he could deal with, as I had too many dudes, thanks to Garruk, Primal Hunter. A third 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Mono-Black Vampires (4/0/0) -- The guy dropped two Vampire Nocturnus and swung for 14 (there was a black card on top) Game 1, and I had no responses. Game 2, Garruk, Primal Hunter just kept pooping dudes onto the field, and I turned them all sideways before he could find an out. Game 3 was the most stupid of the night, with him dropping me to 4, then me dropping Thragtusk, followed by Disciple of Bolas (so, draw 5, gain 10, get 5 power), him promptly dropping me back to 8, then topdecking the other Thragtusk (I drew my other Disciple of Bolas from the first), and going to 18. Then Vault of the Archangel took me to 42, and he died a miserable death. A 2-1 V.

It's ALIIIIIIIIIVE

Playtested the deck in a big multiplayer game. This deck is super fun! It is strangely powerful, especially in team games, and relies on people not perceiving you as a threat; if you're playing with people who are not your friends including some group hug would be recommended. Reverberate'ing and Chandra, the Firebrand copying someone's nonsense is deeply satisfying. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind is a great choice for a commander in the case of the game dragging on too long. There is enough draw power here to almost always have a full hand regardless of cards played.
Overall: great success, and really fun! I would recommend this style deck to anyone wanting to just have fun playing EDH without worrying too much about winning every time. The deck tends to do well because it has no reliable threat or board state, and so no one targets you!

Round 1: went up against a planeswalkerless junk token deck, went 2-0 with a tamiyo emblem both games.
Round 2: went up against a ramp door/worldfire deck, game 1 answered all his threats and with none left in his deck he scooped. Game 2 countered a Thragtusk then landed a memory adept and milled him out.
Round 3: got pummeled by r/b zombies...
Round 4: used charisma on my opponent and got him to give me the win. Round 5 drew in
Top 8 against junk tokens with planeswalkers and mainboard discard, won game 1 with superior board pressence, game 2 lost by not casting Rest in Peace when I should have... and got blown out game 3 by targeted discard.

First FNM

TL;DR version: went 1-2 and placed 5th at Gamemasters.
Game one I was playing against a blue/white control deck, and was destroyed by Oblivion Ring, Essence Scatter, Unsummon, and a Thought Scour. I did not stand a chance and need to splash in some denial for the Orings. Also flying angels like Restoration Angel destroyed me.
Game two my deck destroyed a green/white deck. The guy was running a spell deck with only two or so creatures. He could not get around Lotleth Troll's regenerate, or my Predator Ooze. They won me four games against him (two tourney, two for fun after my win cause he wanted to beat my deck).
Game three I couldn't get any creatures out long enough to build up, thanks to Orings and Silverblade Paladin. The second match I was mana screwed and should of shuffled my opening hand back in. I never got enough going before a silverblade paladin and a 5/5 angel soulbonded and destroyed me.

Got 2nd place!
Round 1: Went up against a Thragtusk and Craterhoof Behemoth deck. First game I did alright, but he got 4 1/1 flyers out from Lingering Souls and then got Craterhoof Behemoth out and swung over me. Second game I sideboarded in Nevermore instead of Sphere of Safety. In hindsight, I would have done much better with Sphere of Safety. Might have actually won this round with it.
Round 2: Played a Innistrad only werewolf deck. I went 2-0 very quickly.
Round 3: Played a Selesnya deck, first game was won pretty quickly with a Precinct Captain that ended up getting Bonds of Faith, Ethereal Armor, and a Rancor. Swinging over the top for 18 each round ended it quickly. Game 2 was a bit closer, didn't get any 1-2 drop creatures until turn 3, but then had the mana to put out multiple champions of the perish and 2 precinct captains. I started generating tokens and had Ajani, Caller of the Pride on the table the game only lasted a couple more turns than the first game.
Overall, was a good play test of the deck. It's quick, and has plenty of conditions to win. The only issue I have for now is high-power decks like the first round I played tonight. More testing and playing with this deck is needed for me to get the full hang of it. But I'm loving it still!

Oddities

The mana curve in this deck is *fucked up*. It looks like it needs lots of green but it doesn't. I've found myself more starved for black than anything else. Thinking of changing out the Hallowed Fountains with Glacial Fortress, and maybe adding some basics instead of the Sunpetal Groves, but other than that I'm going to leave it alone for the time being. Went 2 and 3 tonight at FNM. Disappointed, but the deck wasn't quite finished and I was using a few filler cards that were slowing me down.
FNM Report - 4th
Toddington, 12 years ago
Ok, so this is the second FNM I've taken the deck too, and I went 4-1. The field was pretty strong, with two out of my four matches being Thragtusk, I also had a bye. Thragtusk is barely a problem, Pyreheart Wolf and Zealous Conscripts deal with it handily. I found Huntmaster of the Fells Flip to be more of an issue.
Round 1 / Grixis Control / 2-0
He had some Pillar of Flames, Izzet Charms, and Vampire Nighthawks, but it didn't really matter. People tend to use all the removal before Hellrider hits play. There's a lack of good instant speed removal in the format, or so it seems. Haste is a good place to be right now. He resolved Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker one game, but Hellrider and Devil's Play are sooooo good against planeswalkers. One thing I did notice, that Hound of Griselbrand is very unexciting as long as Pillar is popular. This may warrant some changes.
Round 2 / UG... / 0-2
I don't have a clue what this deck was. Augur of Bolas, Master of the Pearl Trident Thragtusk, all the counterspells, and Search the City. I had a window to win game 1, but incorrectly played around countermagic on a Devil's Play, and he resolved a Tusk. Second game I got fished completely, merfolk beatdown with counter support. Not even close. A sweet brew.
Round 3 / Bye
Round 4 / Jund sans Tusk / 2-0
All the spot removal, but my threat density was too high. This is another place where all the removal was sorcery. Archwing Dragon did some work. Devil's Play was good too.
Round 5 / Junk Tokens / 2-1
I thought this was it after game 1, but in the later games he failed to have more than one threat. I curved Wolf, into Hellrider, into Conscripts both games. That's the best curve ever by the way. Intangible Virtue can really do work.
So, what am I thinking? Games I lost were games I flooded out. Drawing more than 8 lands is pretty much it, and that is the upper limit. Hellion Crucible helps. I don't think I'm running too much land, it was just bad beats. Hound isn't as good when everyone is playing Pillar. I think the deck is pretty solid, but I'm a sloppy player, especially when it comes to sideboarding. I find myself boarding out Rakdos Cacklers a lot. They can be useless, but it sacrifices a lot of early game. As you can see in my card and sideboard choices, I'm trying to go over the top and be the control. One of the reasons why red is so good right now, is that it goes under so well. I need to acknowledge this more often. HELLRIDER STEALS GAMES.
Oh yeah, I played against Naya casually. The Tusk, Huntmaster, Bonfire of the Damned, Restoration Angel, Loxodon Smiter version. Guess who won every single game?

This deck in testing has been pretty ridiculous, people dont expect it and you go through there cards like crazy. put tamiyo in as a 2 of because she helps hold there strongest guy back and infi- fog is pretty funny. jace is your main win con but it can fall back on the atlas . This deck is a little tricky to play and ill admit you need good timing and know when to play the cards

A Great deck been play testing with it and think its fantastic! gonna make changes though. ill link it when i do.
i want to add more Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius but not sure what to take out...

Aturos, 12 years ago
I made a few changes today. I added 3 Vexing Devils because burn spells should always work well. also mainboarded 3 Volcanic Strength because most of my opponents are playing red so it should do very well. I'm not sure how I can handle those annoying Thragtusks ...
1st day of testing.

Tested at FNM and proved a fairly fun decks and somewhat powerful, especially with wild beastmaster paired with wolfir silverheart :D. Unsure on the spiders, nice but unsure, vigilance was the most useful part of them rather than reach..... Will have to have another look.
