Always room for improvement

Tok this deck to FNM and did fairly well, even though I had terrible luck with my hands :P I played against a green/black aggro deck, a red/white human deck, and a balck red rakdos deck. I am probably going to: remove one of the nivmagus elementals, add another hover barrier, remove 2 lands, and add 2 more draw spells like divination or wild guess...

FNM
Forsaken1372, 12 years ago
I went to my local FNM and went 2-2 and then I dropped because it was no use when most of the time it takes at least a 4-1 record to top 8.
Round 1: went up against Esper Spirits, record 2-1
Game 1: I lost horribly. Too many tokens to take care of.
Game 2: He was at 6 life and I was at 2 after he attacked with a 4/4 captain and a doomed traveler witch I blocked with my guttersnipe. At the end of his turn he has 2 captains 5 spirit tokens and the enchantment that gives +1/+1 to flying creatures, I play ranger's guile targeting my guttersnipe and deals two damage to him. He is now at 4 life. My turn I untap my 3 lands and devil's play him for 2 and guttersnipe for the win.
Game 3: I win after 3 board wipes and a nevermore naming guttersnipe, but I still manage the win.
Results: All the games were fun and close.
Round 2: RDW, record 1-2
I didn't get the right spells at the right time to take down the fast nature of the deck.
Round 3: Grixis Control, record 2-1
Very close matches, the only reason I lost was to a Tamiyo alt.
Round 4: Home brew of I don't know what. Record 1-2
It was a weird deck the ran the 2 mana token producing cards, Battle Hymn to produce mana for Past in Flames and Burn at the Stake for the win.
Final Results: I need to find a way to take care of aggro based decks and I had fun.

Cards
Slycne, 12 years ago
A few days ago I saw Drunken Selesnya built by DePeluche and then at FNM I hit a deck with a similar premise, though it was a junk build that just happened to have some of the elements. I play against a wide variety of people and I like to have a few fun decks on me so I'm not just crushing with hyper aggressive T4 kills decks against newer players.
While building the deck I gravitated additionally towards Gnaw to the Bone for the sheer potential it has over any other life gain card, and a few other cards become apparent as supporting that or providing win-cons.
Mainboard
Arbor Elf/Avacyn's Pilgrim are for acceleration. This deck doesn't really spin up until at least 3 CMC, and it really wants to get a Rhox Faithmender in play as soon as possible.
Centaur Healer starts the lifegain and comes down on a nice 3/3 body.
Kessig Cagebreakers this one of is a win condition with a full graveyard.
Nearheath Pilgrim binds with Centaur Healer and Splinterfright for more life.
Rhox Faithmender one of the decks core pieces, I might try to find something to drop to 4-of here. The silly win con is to have around 2 of these on the board and then Gnaw to the Bone flashback Gnaw to the Bone on a yard with 10 creature or so in it. (((10 x 2) x 2) x 2) = 80 then flashback for another 80.
Splinterfright gets big by feeding the yard which in turn feed Gnaw to the Bone.
Mulch gets more creatures in the graveyard.
Gnaw to the Bone see Rhox Faithmender entry.
Heroes' Reunion not quite as oppressive as Gnaw to the Bone. but it doesn't have any conditions. 14 off a Rhox Faithmender isn't too bad either.
Chalice of Life Flip the goal is to try and flip these.
Sideboard
I haven't decided yet, though I'll likely never run this deck somewhere that needs it. I should probably at least stuff a few responses to graveyard hate in.
Maybeboard
Creeping Renaissance let's me fetch back a bunch of cards, making my graveyard into psuedo card advantage. As an added bonus it can still be cast if it get's pitched in the yard.
Elixer of Immortality another likely sideboard option. This deck seems weak to milling and might very well mill itself in a long game.

Replaced 1x Deviant Glee in the Sideboard with Slaughter Games. Will rethink it again when I get another copy of that and/or Grafdigger's Cage. Or when Gatecrash comes out. Whichever comes first.

Might be taking the Guildgates out in lieu of just basic Swamps, unless I can find another non-basic Land to replace them with. So far they haven't slowed me down, but eventually the deck will be reliant on speed enough that I know they will.

Dry Run
ph1sh, 12 years ago
I did some dry runs with this deck against my friend's spirit and vampire decks. I lost consistently to both. The main reason seems to be that I have no defense for flying creatures. To combat the flying weakness of my deck, I am swapping out 2x Blood Reckoning and Curse of Exhaustion for a Lingering Souls, a Doomed Traveler, and a Griffin Protector. The protector will be removed and replaced when I get more cards to add to this deck.
Some Changes

Switched out some stuff. One thing I made sure to add was Moltensteel Dragon as well as a few other cards. The deck moves faster now which is one thing I was trying to do.

Round 1: R/B zombies 0-2 couldn't keep up, this is a very difficult deck to deal with if you don't get off to a good start. Round 2: R/B/U Bolas 2-0 I ramped, thragtusk, sphinx's and called it a match. Round 3: B/G Rats 2-0 really didn't have a chance the rats were easy to take care of and I was able to draw and win. Round 4: Naya midrange 2-0 I thought I was going down but I was able to get the drams and board wipe/sphere his big guns and gain enough life for him to overcome . Top 4 decided to split so I got 3rd and ended up with 10 packs!

dont mind the extra 3 acidic slime's there in there for a Alt win con trust me it saved my ass alot and your constently drawing cards each turn

Minor Change
ResurrectedSage, 12 years ago
Pulled Void Stalker for Chromatic Lantern.
Figured the former was good for control decks, while the latter will help with mana balancing, in case Griselbrand or something doesn't have enough of their color mana.

FNM 2-2
Codeboy3423, 12 years ago
Went 2-2
It all came down to luck on my opponents on FNM.
I had a double Hellrider with Thundermaw Hellkite with Vexing Devil Just coming in. He let the Devil stay and I attack for Killing blow with all I got, then he played Faith's Shield Faithful Hour on Prot Red. barely having him win the 3rd round.
My other loss was because my opponents deck actually worked as its supposed to because afterword I Looked at his deck he had a 1 in 10 chance of it working right..It was Mono green Aggro and what helped was double Miracle of the +6 /+6. for 2 turns with a Rancor powered Strangleroot Geist. First game with him was pathetic literally. next two was good him pulling a win out of his ass and the last one was the one with the double miracle explained above. I almost wanted to say he was cheating but its Magic...things happens : /
Other 2 matches were just...yeah lets say I ended it quickly before I started to feel bad for them and would give them a game win.

So I tried playing Ulvenwald Tracker. Didn't like it. Most of the time I was just wishing it was an Avacyn's Pilgrim. So I took the Trackers out and put some Pilgrims back in. I feel this is a deck that can more resiliently stand against the Rakdos Hyper-Aggro deck. Being able to hit a T2 Centaur Healer, T3 Huntmaster, and T5 Thragtusk seems like a good way to last into the later game when you can start doing better. Right now, though, the issues lay in the fact that the Naya color combinations don't have as much support. Gatecrash can/will certainly fix that, but I like the idea that this is still a deck that works.

Played several games against a friend's janky WB Human aggro. With all the burn and countermagic here, I was able to do incredibly well, especially if he didn't have Thalia out. The games he was able to break through was when he managed to T2 a Thalia and use Faith's Shield to prevent me from burning her/something else. Still Bonfire was often a game-winner. Thoughtflare was the dead card of the day. I'd much rather be playing something else, so I threw in a Chromatic Lantern in its spot to help with the difficult mana base.

Added Darkest Hour to facilitate infinite sacrifice loops using my sac outlets. Considering replacing Dread with Avacyn, Angel of Hope, good idea or bad? Added more draw cards Phyrexian Arena, Staff of Nin, and Bloodgift Demon
