Chancellor of the Annex

Creature — Phyrexian Angel

You may reveal this card from your opening hand. If you do, when each opponent casts his or her first spell of the game, counter that spell unless that player pays 1. Flying Whenever an opponent casts a spell, counter it unless that player pays 1.

Another suggestion is for your sideboard. Angel of Jubilation for any decks that want to use life as a cost like Phyrexian Mana, Archangel of Tithes + Authority of the Consuls for aggressive decks, Chancellor of the Annex offers a free counter spell unless they pay 1 additional mana, Giver of Runes protection for a single creature against colorless or whatever color you choose, Disenchant for artifacts and enchantments and finally, Rest in Peace for decks that want to mess with their graveyard such as reanimator decks.

sergiodelrio on Ways to STOP T0 GRIEF/FURY …

Good day fine people of Tappedout.

Today, without going into a rant because it has all been whispered into the wind 1000 times, I would like to Brainstorm with all of you ways to defend against the aggression in-game, for I believe in an MTG universe where the Johnnies/Jennies can handle any oppressive strategy that chose to infest their meta.

In case your memory is rusted, the SCAM deck uses Grief and Fury alongside multiple Not Dead After All effects for extra value to pick your hand quickly and/or killing your small creatures and PWs but they get to keep their evoked creatures anyway.

What I ask for in this thread are either specific cards and/or combos that can negate their 2for1 lines of play, preferably on our own T0 or T1. Another option could be describing a shell that could have the potential to entirely nullify their strat for one reason or another and does itself need not be reliant on quick execution (T0/T1) by default.

I'll start:

  • The reason I even included T1 and not just T0 is Gemstone Caverns. This card, however inconvenient to work with, opens up 1 mana of any color in case they go first so for example Mana Tithe, Spell Pierce et al could counter their Not Dead After All (and yes, I see how that is absoluely not optimal, we're just putting any idea on the table) or maybe a Stern Scolding can counter at least a Grief.

  • Chancellor of the Annex is like a conditional one-shot leyline Mana Tithe but comes with obvious drawbacks.

  • Leyline of Sanctity prevents them from targeting you alltogether, which is nice, but that card is a really bad topdeck.

  • I guess there are multiple ways to exile their GY with the undying trigger on the stack, but that also just solves half the problem. Leyline of the Void stops the reanimation part.

  • Then there are cards like Loxodon Smiter that just GOTCHA discard strats, but what would the rest of the deck look like? Kinda meh?

  • Disrupting Shoal is pretty interesting imho and has always been a secret weapon of mine. Sure, it is still 2for2 but we're not losing tempo? Hard to judge.

EDIT:

So I'd like to hear your thoughts and ideas on this, please!

If you want, in addition to mentioning cards and shells, it might be interesting to also discuss what the rest of the deck would look like, or a general strat of that deck, since obviously a pile of removal spells and hate cards still need a way to close the game.

I'm a sucker for tribal decks in general and angels are just awesome.

A neat tech option could be Chancellor of the Annex to slow down some hyper aggressive strategies... besides that I feel like Serra the Benevolent needs to be here in some capacity.... mana for a Serra Angel that leaves a planswalker behind to then Glorious Anthem if she survives seems strong in angel tribal... at least the flavor is hard to resist lol (but I have my own personal bias I just love Serra).

Damn XinZhao, how have I missed Blast-Furnace Hellkite?! Excellent suggestion! I’m definitely swapping Chancellor of the Annex for it. You’re right, Chancellor can be overcome easier than Liesa, Shroud of Dusk. Liesa is especially painful against decks depending on life consumption like K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth.

BF Hellkite joins the category of “damage doublers” like Archfiend of Despair and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. Plus it encourages other players to attack each other.

zAzen7977 I've been looking for good replacements for Chancellor of the Annex and Liesa, Shroud of Dusk I found one I think would be a super good addition, Blast-Furnace Hellkite has a pretty crazy effect that really adds pressure to the board and really turns your threats into outright unadulterated violence. I think Chancellor of the Annex is the choice here her effect is nice but I think most storm combos would be able to pay the extra mana as opposed to Liesa's effect which could just outright kill someone trying to combo off as well as whittle away opponents making it easier to close out a game.

Great points XinZhao, I agree that the board state required to set up Bloodthirster is too complex to be consistent, I’d rather run something else.

Thanks for the suggestion Last_Laugh, I hadn’t seen Spirit Mantle before. I wouldn’t run it in this build, but it could be really handy in a more aggro-heavy deck.

I’m experimenting with the current decklist. As compared to the old list, I’m running more creature-based ramp (Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Dockside Extortionist, Professional Face-Breaker, Ancient Copper Dragon), more anti-storm stax (Chancellor of the Annex, Liesa, Shroud of Dusk), and every Rule of Law effect (making it easier to stick the RoL + Possibility Storm combo). I swapped Council's Judgment for Angel of the Ruins, and dropped Damn and Teferi's Protection for a couple extra lands to ensure consistent mana access. I’m going to test this version for a while and see how it goes.

kimosabe, I do know of the combo, but, faceless haven would break tribal. The entire deck is ONLY Angels, with no possibility of other creature types. There’s not even an Angel Warrior or Angel Cleric. When I found out they errated Chancellor of the Annex to be a “Phyrexian” Angel I removed her mid-game. I can’t even run Decree of Justice. Yes it makes angels but if you cycle it, it COULD make soldiers. STRICT tribal lol

And snow-covered lands are too cheap! Plus, the Avon foils are one of the prettiest Plains in the game, and Angels deserve the prettiest.

Mortlocke on New hubs to be added

Hello legendofa,

I propose a new hub to be added: Phyrexian. During Modern Horizons 2, 225 creatures were retconned into having the Phyrexian creature subtype to join Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider . Additionally, there were a smattering of Enchantments, Artifacts and etc that ether have the Phyrexian subtype or create creature tokens that do. Thanks to this retcon I now have a deck that has a Phyrexian tribal theme. For your reference, below is a full list of spells that were affected by WotC's Phyrexian errata.
