EDH Booster pack deck

Deck Help forum

After playing a bit of limited and being underwhelmed with Commander Legends, I was inspired to return to Magic for a commander deck.

The idea of the deck is the following:

  1. The main deck consists 39 mana sources and the commander.
  2. Make 9 or more different thematic packs for the deck, each with 12 cards, 3.Create a pile of 48 utility cards, consisting of removal, mass removal, enchantment/artifact/graveyard hate, etc.
  3. Add 4 thematic packs of 12 cards each at random before each game to the original 40, plus 12 cards selected at random from the utility pile. to make it a legal deck.

I want your help to design this deck monstrosity.

I have thought about a suitable commander that can fit a variety of play styles and have come up with Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, mainly for the colors and his versatile play style.

The desired power level of the deck is like 5.5/10.

Booster Pack Commander

Please comment below or in the deck itself a booster pack you would like to see for this deck project.

how would you deal with boardwipes or manarocks? bc a manarock pack would auto-include 15 mana rocks (and someone who doesn't get this at the start of the game is at a great disadvantage)... and someone who gets the 15-boardwipes is also at a great advantage.

This seems that the random aspect of it could backfire to many unfun games.

BEDECK: I think you can somewhat solve that issue by having each pack include a minimum of two sources of ramp, and at least one single target removal. Then you can have half of the packs (4/9) contain one boardwipe.

This way you are guaranteed four single target removal and 8 sources of ramp. And will typically get at least one boardwipe. But unlikely to get all four and have them be dead cards.

Otherwise if you want pure randomness and are just doing it for laughs then no need for any of that.

BEDECK, this idea can be balanced with the power level of each pack. Sure, there will be discrepancies, but the idea is to have a lot of different games with the same game. If you have another idea on how to make a modular EDH deck, I am all ears.

plakjekaas, this is exactly it! Thank you!

So kinda like jumpstart edh? Might I suggest that you make temp packs removal packs ect. Then everyone gets one of each or however many to make their decks with. That way you can keep a really good balance

Boza I'm thinking my issue is with the premade themed packs idea... I thought of something a bit different:

  • Make "piles" instead of packs - because piles you can shuffle
  • Roll a die to determine how many cards from a pile wou get (after they have been shuffled)

This way you would get different cards each game and different ratio of mana rocks/sorceries/creatures, etc...

Using this base idea you could customize the piles more freely and add/remove synergies.

You could also determine your own rules such as:

  • "the number of cards I grab from this pile is 5 + the dice number"; or
  • "if after I roll for each pile the deck still doesn't have 99 cards, I can grab cards at random from whichever piles I feel like"

Idk, what do you think about this idea? I could be misunderstanding, but I felt like the packs idea was maybe a bit too rigid

What is this, Jumpstart: Commander Ed.? lol Would be fantastic

Perhaps that is the way to go... have packs with themes with dedicated slots. SO 4 packs to make 100 total, if you use the 8x8 strat then for each category such as removal, card advantage, etc you include 2 cards. 2x4 = 8

Your ramp category is already in the 40 cards so you can exclude that. so pack's could look like this:

Single Target removal, of any kind occupies this slot. x2

Mass removal ( this can be reduce to 1 per pack tbh) x1

Card advantage , draw, recurrence, etc,ect, x2

Category of choice #1 (tokens?) x2

Category of choice #2 (sacrifice?) x2

and x6 on theme cards? Maximize crossover where you can between categories. idk, seems legit. The separating everything afterwards, now there's the real fun XD. Going to have to make list cards once packs are decided. If I mean.

So are we making 15-card booster packs? If so, that means we get 1 rare or mythic, I think like 5 uncommons and 9 commons, right?

Actually isn't it more like 9 commons, 4 uncommons, 1 rare or mythic and a token / reminder card unless that card is replaced with a foil?

Thank you all for your feedback! I have not had the opportunity to check back on the thread, but the project is very much in progress!

I can now see the flaws of the approach and will clarify how the updated approach will work.

TypicalTimmy, not actual booster packs, I want this deck to do something :) Just 15 card packets, similar to what you would see in cube.

shadow63, I can see the jumpstart similarities now.

JANKYARD_DOG, yes similarly to jumpstart, but a bit more curated. This approach will lead to quite more consistent games, I think the idea is to be bit more chaotic.

plakjekaas, thank you, I will these (probably minus the super expensive cards).

BEDECK, I will meet you halfway and dedicate 3-4 slots of utility cards like removal, graveyard hate in each pack in order to mitigate consistency.

All, thank you very much for the inputs! Based on those, I will edit the post and decklist to rectify the consistency issue.
