After drawing Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful from a Kamigawa booster, I was inspired by the Old Blood/Witted folk of the Realm of the Elderlings series which I'm currently reading to partner him up with another counters-based partner commander and seeing how far I could take up that bonded theme. It's not just an Ikoria thing, turns out!

This is a counters-matter deck, which either builds up counters for wide swings with the help of spells like Cathars' Crusade, or switches to a tron approach with creatures uniquely suited to withstand board wipes (or even instigate them) like Myojin of Cleansing Fire and Massacre Girl, who make use of everyone else's counters thanks to either Reyhan, Last of the Abzan and/or The Ozolith. Sudden heavy swings from sac engines like Yahenni, Undying Partisan are also wincon options under similar conditions, especially when counter-based evasion effects from the likes of Abzan Falconer are in play as well.

Legendary-matters is effectively a subtheme in this deck, as a quick and easy way to accumulate counters for the strategies above via the cheap and therefore dependable Yoshimaru. Now there's a good dog!
