This budget deck needs a little work but does alright for itself in its current form. Nobody can tell what the hell Norin is doing until it's too late. It would be nice to mix up the shenanigans a little more so Norin isn't so reliant on the same couple of cards, but it might also be that my plays so far have simply drawn me into the same game plan each time.

With an impending face-to-face session for the first time in over three years (!) and the ascent of Commander as our go-to format, I've been dusting off my budget decks to get them ready for play. Norin is probably the oddest of the bunch, and I've got a number of swaps to streamline the deck and align it with how I build Commander decks these days.

First of all, recent releases allow me to replace generic selections with cards more specific to Norin:

  • Hedron Archive --> Rose Room Treasurer
  • Jayemdae Tome --> Symmetry Matrix
  • Thrill of Possibility --> Dark-Dweller Oracle

I noticed that quite a few of the cards in the "ETB Effects" suite provided removal. Meanwhile, several of the removal cards were not all that helpful in the "meta" of my own budget decks or were wanted elsewhere in my collection. I therefore merged the removal half of the "ETB Effects" suite into the removal suite. This opened up room for some new cards with ETB Effects that aren't related to removal.

  • Red Elemental Blast --> Devilish Valet
  • Tuktuk Scrapper --> Kruin Striker
  • By Force --> Bloodline Pretender
  • Goblin Chainwhirler --> Witty Roastmaster

The most significant changes are to remove the support suite I'd imported from my disbanded Etali deck, which was not very helpful unless Etali happened to be in hand. In its place, I'm doubling down on the token producers to maximize the many ETB triggers elsewhere in the deck:

  • Widespread Panic --> Goblin Instigator
  • Crashing Drawbridge --> Mogg War Marshal
  • Hour of Devastation --> Tuktuk Rubblefort
  • Word of Seizing --> Goblin Rally
  • Paragon of Fierce Defiance --> Daring Piracy
  • Destructive Force --> Chandra, Acolyte of Flame
  • Magmatic Force --> Beetleback Chief

In addition, some of the token producers I had in here were pretty inefficient or did not work at all with the deck:

  • Molten Echoes --> Weaponize the Monsters
  • Warbreak Trumpeter --> Goblin War Party

Finally, I made a couple budget swaps:

  • Insurrection --> Apex of Power
  • Relentless Assault --> Change of Fortune
