Deck #2: Mono-White

Hey Guys! Dave here. Mono-White EDH; the home of mostly just Equipment-based shenanigans. White has a lot going against it in the realm of Commander. The severe lack of real card draw, limited tutor options, and inability to actually ramp makes tuning an uphill battle that is arguably tougher than building Mono-Red…however, White does have some major advantages that are sometimes overlooked. What it can tutor up, Enchantments and Artifacts, it can abuse with the right commander at the helm. It also excels at stopping other people from trying to get further ahead with Balance-like cards and effective sweepers. Today, we are throwing out the obvious choice Commanders this color provides for a flavorful and underdog tribe, Griffins!

This deck is a tribal deck I build for various reasons, but the main reason being I didn’t want another basic white token/equipment deck. Griffins have always stood out as an interesting creature in both mythology and fantasy settings for me. It also feels like Wizard of the Coast has an inside joke about Griffins. They printed a Griffin Lord in Mirage, a tribal land in Visions, and then laughably unplayable Griffins to back it all up. Most Griffins are four-mana, 2/2 flying creatures. Some have an upside, like First Strike or Vigilance, but most are just what they are. Even when given two planes where Griffins thrive, Ravnica and Theros, they still didn’t print anything very noteworthy.

As with all tribal decks, you can’t solely rely on jamming the tribe and hoping you win. You still need to see what that tribe does better and build a deck that emphasizes that effect. Griffins are all small, evasive creatures that don’t typically lend themselves to normal creature-based value engines. This lead me to work on making the deck push small critters matter and mine need to be the best. I included various Kismet effects and Meekstone effects to lock down large threats and included as many first strike Griffin creatures as I could to maximize the effectiveness of my small creatures versus my opponents. I then looked into adding Vigilance effects to the deck to further make my small, evasive army get offensive and still play defense. Torpor Orb and Grafdigger's Cage are all-star cards for this build as they really don’t affect my board state while hindering popular archetypes within the format.

Overall, this is a very casual deck that I like to play along with Planechase or Archenemy style games where you can further leverage random effects and Planes to increase your options. It also can highlight just how powerful some individual cards are in the format if left unanswered. It isn’t the Griffin beatdown that will win you a game, it’s a protected Elspeth, Sun's Champion doing most of the heavy lifting. As always, Happy Gaming!
