Prying Blade Discussion

Revedeka on The Unblockables

Hey Struyk, what an awesome deck! I didn't realise that there were so many unblockable creatures in standard at the moment, it really opens the way for all these fun decks.

I immediately thought of buffing those unblockable creatures to deal massive damage while spells like Dive Down, Curator's Ward or Shalai, Voice of Plenty together with Siren Stormtamer would most likely offer you a lot of protection and a way to close out the game quickly. Standard doesn't give great access to hexproof creatures at the moment which is the other way this might work, just like the modern bogles deck, the best one being Slippery Scoundrel which is very unreliable.

The one enchantment I really love in this deck, and doesn't even require any protection since it doesn't put that big a target on itself is Curious Obsession, in my opinion the strongest aura in standard at the moment. Put it on a one drop unblockable turn 2, and get a card out of it immediately. The on disadvantage of aura's is that they tend to be 2 for 1's if your opponent can just kill the creature, but with Curious Obsession drawing you cards, that downside is minimalized. Prodigious Growth is a rather funny one, but probably not good in this deck since you have to heavily splash for it since it costs double green.

Other than aura's that have their disadvantages, you can also look at equipements in order to increase the power of your unblockable creatures. Torch Gauntlet, Marauder's Axe and Forebear's Blade are very basic equipment that just increase the damage a lot. Rogue's Gloves just gives some some nice value, but is inferior to Curious Obsession in my opinion. Some equipment that do both are Prying Blade and Dowsing Dagger  Flip, especially the Dowsing Dagger  Flip is great since your opponent can't do anything with the creatures since yours are unblockable.

So in conclusion, I would cut the creature count down to around 20, and keep the ones that don't need other ones to be unblockable. This would probably mean that I would cut Combat Celebrant, Warkite Marauder and probably Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive. I would also cut Ovalchase Dragster. Then I would add around 8 Buff cards, 4 Curious Obsession and then some equipments, and fill all leftover spots with cheap anti-removal like Negate. This way your deck can definitely race other decks, while not giving your opponent a lot of room to interact. You can also consider Trumpet Blast or some other mass team buff spell. However, this changes the deck a lot, and doesn't have to be better. If you would like to stick to the current iteration of this deck, I would still advise Curious Obsession as well as perhaps some team buff spells and/or some more counter spells, probably not anti-creature counters, but anti-spell like Negate. The burn spells in the sideboard are a good idea, I would add some extra creature removal there.

Hey ROUROU!

Thanks for checking it out! I wasn't really sure what "low budget" range was, and by checking the other "budget" decks I was well around half the cost of those I checked. A simple solution to the cost is taking out History of Benalia which is $15 a piece if I'm not mistaken.

For a twenty dollar version:

Remove: x2 History of Benalia and x1 Prying Blade

Add: x3 Dauntless Bodyguard

Thanks again for checking it out! Hope your friend enjoys it!

Yeah, I picked up another Jaya's Immolating Inferno. I'll definitely try it this Friday. I think the Gilded Lotus works well with the Artifact discounts and draws a card from Jhoira, but it makes sense that something else could be put in their place to make the deck more consistent, and lower the curve. I'm having trouble figuring out the 1-2 CMC part of the curve, so it's packed with mana rocks and discounts. Between Orazca relic and Powerstone, for now, I definitely want to keep three copies of one of them, not sure which. Definitely taking Treasure map out with this build, but I also tested it with Storm the Vault, and Prying Blade , specially equipped with Traxos, Scourge of Kroog. The Howling Golems have been removed, and I think I'm going to picking up some Pedeems, Locust Gods, and Foundry Inspectors this Friday to test it out.

Thank you all for the comments!

RazortoothMtg thanks for the kind words! I think Bludgeon Brawl is definitely worth a try in Valduk... seems like great value! I considered doing just him but wanted that White artifact synergy.

TheACTR thank you! I considered Sword of the Animist but decided that Prying Blade was the treasure token equivalent. Might find its way in! I will check your list out!

beninator thank you! I have Armory Automaton for that role and I don't think I need another.

I like Golem-Skin Gauntlets SecretEgret! And Smuggler's Copter might go in if I need more draw! Thanks!

TheRedGoat just trying to find room for Daretti and lattice hahah been very busy! I am absolutely trying to play it aggro tokens and value engine all at once haha! We'll see how it goes! Slate of Ancestry is either just okay or straight up game winning, Boros burns through it's hand fast so even paying 4 to draw 3 when topdecking is great, or when i have tokens out it's draw 20. Skullclamp is just a really good equipment but we'll see how it plays if I ever get the chance to test the deck! Thank you!

Don't forget to upvote everyone! Helps more people see the deck and builds momentum! Thank you all!

Deck looks sweet, from what Ive seen of the format so far I would cut the Fanatical Firebrand, it doesnt do a whole lot. Metallic Mimic seems out of place as does Inventor's Goggles. Squee, the Immortal could probably be cut as well. Prying Blade also isnt very good.

You could also cut a lot of the random creatures that arent historic like Warkite Marauder, Timestream Navigator, and Combat Celebrant. If you wanna timewalk effect I would look at Karn's Temporal Sundering though I dont think the deck needs it.

I also had cards like Shock and Magma Spray but cut them for stuff that can hit bigger creatures. Fight with Fire is a good one from Dominaria.

The only card I think you need to add is Walking Ballista. Possibly look more towards artifacts over legendary creatures. Also there are some nice utility lands around you could fit in like Scavenger Grounds and Arch of Orazca.

Thats all I could come up with, and it may or may not be correct just thoughts! Awesome deck and Glory to the Firemind!

The main strategy I'd go with is generating large amounts of artifact tokens/creatures to win with either riches or crazy recursion loops with giant beaters, sacking a few myr or thopters with something like Champion of Stray Souls to bring back all your giant beasties. This is just a bunch of possible options that would help with that strategy.
