Finally "Modern"-ized.. —Nov. 2, 2013

Since the last rotation, most of friends started playing Modern builds and (more importantly) because the local Legacy-ish event switched to Modern as well, so-- I decided to make a few changes to make this officially Modern legal..

-4 Swords to Plowshares ~~ +4 Path to Exile

-4 Ancient Den > +4 Plains

Good point, and I'll get one of those eventually; they're just a little pricey to get ahold of.. :P

Hey man, sorry for the long overdue reply to the comment you posted on my Knights deck. Here are my comments/suggestions:

1 - How did you get the full art zendikar design for your Plains in this deck?

2 - Format + Lands - I would highly recommend making this deck modern, as everything in here is modern-legal except for your land choices. Get rid of all of your nonbasic lands except for maybe the Sejiri Steppe and add in 1 Cavern of Souls - you now are free of the soul-crushing depths of legacy. If you want you can play around with a few other nonbasic lands like Flagstones of Trokair (most prominent, as it helps a bit with deck thinning and works against boom/bust decks + land sacrifice (i.e. common Smallpox); Emeria, The Sky Ruin (good if you find yourself playing longer games where 7 plains is a possibility); and Darksteel Citadel (no more than 1 or 2 of with so many WW costs).

3 - Creatures - Auriok Steelshaper is a great card for equipment decks but doesn't fit in a 60 card knight-equipment theme. Sub out all 4 of them for 4x Puresteel Paladin. I would also probably take out your 2 Silverblade Paladin; he is too circumstantial for a low-count creature deck. Mirran Crusader is also a house with equipment, and with a knights theme you want 4 Exemplar. I would probably make your creatures look like this:

4x Student of Warfare, 4x Knight of the White Orchid, 4x Puresteel Paladin, 4x Knight Exemplar, 4x Mirran Crusader. This moves your creature count to 20, which I think is more reliable in a tribal theme.

4 - Equipment - Make sure you use no more than 16 equipment and no less than 14. If you have all of your creatures set as humans, you can really benefit from the card Silver-Inlaid Dagger. This will give you ridiculous advantage against opponents with your first-striking knights - however if you feel the 2 equip cost is too high you can always use Bonesplitter instead. Good call on using Basilisk Collar; with first striking creatures you can one-hit KO enemies - something invaluable when battling zoo, bant and even tron. Also good call on a singleton O-Naginata.

As for your other equipment, I would probably get rid of them. If you have to keep one of either Ring of Thune and Bladed Bracers, choose the ring. You already have 7 equipment with 4 dagger/bonesplitter (use 4 of these), 1 Naginata and 2 collars so you can afford 7-9 more. I would personally consider adding the X and Y swords if you can acquire them. There are quite a variety, and they generally are game-ending if you can get them on a creature. There is also Sword of Vengeance and Batterskull for your consideration as well.

Theoretically if you wanted to make this an aggro knights-equipment deck, you could run 4x of each of bonesplitter and the dagger.

5 - Utility / Other Spells - The only cards left undiscussed are Honor of the Pure and Unmake. With such a low creature count I would highly recommend to just take HotP out for something else. This could be something like 4x Aether Vial (beyond broken for tribal in modern, but expensive to attain). Or you could pick from other utility like Phyrexian Metamorph (excellent in your kind of deck, can copy an equipment, become an exemplar, or destroy an enemy legendary), Steelshaper's Gift (best modern equipment tutor) and/or Faith's Shield.

As for your removal, I would go up to at least a 4-count. Try and run Path to Exile or Dispatch instead of Unmake - it's a great card but when running mono-white you have better options. If you run 3-4 of each of Path AND Dispatch you can cause some serious damage. You may want to also include a singleton Wrath of God for scenarios where your board presence (substantiated by a low creature count in the deck) has been compromised and you are going to be overwhelmed.

6 - Sideboard - Ditch all of the circle of protection spells and run 2-3x Story Circle. I would then personally ensure that you run at least 3x Rest in Peace, 2-4x Faith's Shield (depending whether you ran some in your mainboard; with a low creature count it's a better choice here than Brave the Elements) and likely 4x Leyline of Sanctity. For the rest of the slots you should fill up with your choice of Pithing Needle, Oblivion Ring and/or Wrath of God. None of this is required but it is strongly recommended; you can make very precise SB options in round 2 to hose the other player; for example, Rest in Peace, Leyline of Sanctity and Story Circle all work extremely well to hose combo (which can break the mid-range strategy of your deck).

Wow, this reply ended up being really long. I hope that my suggestions help!

Hi. I'm currently tweaking a similar deck. I got some great ideas as far as equipment from your deck. Thank you. Also have you considered Kinsbaile Cavalier since you mostly have knights it could possibly replace Silverblade Paladin .

Wow--thanks MetaphysicalxProdigy.. That's what I call a detailed suggestion & analysis! :D

First off I noticed you discovered how get the Zendikar lands.. ;) However, more importantly on the next subject of format; Outside of "Standard," my only other option for entering a mtg deck into a public tournament setting is the "soul-crushing depths of 'Legacy".. Therefore, to make this technically "Modern" legal is a completely moot point.. lol.. However I have been planning on getting x1-2 Cavern of Souls , and having a Flagstones of Trokair wouldn't be a bad idea either.. I've also been thinking that acquiring a single Kor Haven would be a good idea in the future..

And you're right about the odd soldier out; Auriok Steelshaper , he's there because of the equipment, but draws no benefit from Knight Exemplar .. And it seems that the only thing (besides Knight of the Holy Nimbus ?) that would be able to fill that slot would be Student of Warfare , but only if I were to run 2-3x AEther Vial s.. See I passed over this card a few times because I don't like the idea of spending all my mana leveling-up a creature that could rather easily just be wiped from the board, rather than dropping more Knights & Equipment out, but the utility of the AEther Vial would be just the thing to make it work..

The stuff about the equipment makes sense, however I disagree over the Ring of Thune < Bladed Bracers isn't going anywhere, mainly because it's a 1-drop, that as a result, actually provides better synergy for exploiting Puresteel Paladin 's abilities..

The utility section is great; I'll certainly take all of that into account.. As for creature removal, I may very well go with (at least) Dispatch considering the underlying 'Metalcraft' theme..

As for the sidebar.. I knew it looks like a joke; I just so happen to get several of these from a repack box, and I've been patently waiting for someone such as yourself to come along and enlighten me on what an effective sidebar (for this kind of deck) would look like.. :P I really wish I knew about Leyline of Sanctity earlier.. :P

All great suggestions; thank you!. :) Though what you suggest in light of a technically "Legacy" format? Oh--and to make things scarier, it's the kind of unsanctioned tournament that allows proxy cards.! So I'll proxy a ridiculously expensive card for the sake of these particular events if it comes right down to it.. But as of this post I own all of the cards in the actual decklist & sidebar..

Kinsbaile cavalier=not the best choice since it's a non human. Sorry, I am new. I subbed out 2 Knight of the White Orchid and put in 2 Sigiled Paladin figuring the extra exalted might help out. Just a thought.

Drop New Benalia, Kabira Crossroads, and maybe Sejiri Steppe. In a fast Knight deck, you don't really want any lands that will slow you down.

It's somewhat surprising to see a Knight deck without Student of Warfare or Knight of Meadowgrain, but I suppose some things had to be cut to make the equipment fit.

Speaking of, some of your equipment seems kind of slow. I only use a single Basilisk Collar in my own Knight deck. If you're going for equipment, you should stick to cards that are cheap to cast and equip. Cards like Loxodon Warhammer and O-Naginata are pushing the limit as far as cost is concerned. Even with Puresteel Paladin, there will be times when you need to pay the equip cost.
