Want to join in on a fun game of commander but don’t have the time or money to really dedicate to a new deck? Well, let me help you out.

First, let’s discuss the budget. A movie ticket these days ranges from 15 to 20 dollars for approximately 2.5 hours of entertainment. If you grabbed popcorn and drink with that we can reasonably say it’s a 40 to 50 dollar venture. Playing a few games of commander can easily be a 2-4 hour ordeal. So we want to be competitive with movie night here. Our grand total is $50.00.

At the time of creation the full deck list comes in at $40-$45 dollars.

First, we need a budget friendly win condition.

Blue does a few things very well, it draws cards and it interrupts our opponent. The deck focuses on draw card spells, creatures, and enchantments. This helps get our game plan together, but also gives us fodder to fill the graveyard for some early game larger creatures like Cryptic Serpent who can give us a defenders chance. The draw card ability also loads our hand with desired instant and sorcery cards to activate our commander, Talrand, Sky Summoner. This is one of our win conditions, create an army of 2/2 flying drakes to swing above our opponents.

We also have access to removal, counter spells, and unsummon spells to keep the board clear of threats that may challenge our win condition with the commander.

The second win condition leans heavily into our ability to draw cards. Triskaidekaphile gives us the win condition of having exactly 13 cards in hand. With the amount of precision built into the card draw this can be done pretty effectively.

Our last win condition involves filling the hand and swinging out with large creatures that have power and toughness equal to the number of cards in our hand.

The deck composition includes mana rocks, ramp, acceleration, and removal at the standard composition rate.
