Deathbringer Thoctar

Creature — Zombie Beast

Whenever another creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may put a +1/+1 counter on Deathbringer Thoctar.

Remove a +1/+1 counter from Deathbringer Thoctar: Deathbringer Thoctar deals 1 damage to target creature or player.

You could add the following to make this deck a bit faster, and they're all quite cheap:

Sol Talisman Rakdos Signet Fire Diamond Charcoal Diamond Prismatic Lens Worn Powerstone

cards to remove: Blackblade Reforged, The Eldest Reborn, Smoldering Egg, Volcanic Dragon, Ring of Xathrid, Rune of Mortality

aslo i'd swap Victim of Night for Grim Bounty

i think you want to consider Swiftfoot Boots replacing Ring of Valkas

you should also really consider taking out the dragons for: Blood Cultist Dagger Caster Blood Cultist Prodigal Pyromancer Morbid Opportunist Deathbringer Thoctar Fireslinger Cunning Sparkmage

when those get deathtouch, you can ice any creature that poses a threat to zagras

I would optimize the buffs you give zagras to +3 power so you can kill people in 3 attacks Grafted Wargear Heirloom Blade

double strike is actually way better since the deathtouch will kill the creature on first strike damage: Fireshrieker Lizard Blades Embercleave Assault Strobe Berserkers' Onslaught Blood Mist

Markov Blademaster Temur Battle Rage

BertilFalukorv on Need a home for my …

My favorite card is a black enchantment on the Reserved list that I got two copies of a while back before the prices skyrocketed. But I never found a proper home for it.

The card in question is Tombstone Stairwell

As long as my yard always have more creatures than my opponents it will never be worth attacking me since then I can always outblock their tombspawn tokens.

Below I've listed what some of the colors can do to bring this card to life. (hehe) I know there are a lot more and please don't hestitate to type in your suggestions so that I can add to the list. The reason I list them is to make it easier to think of what kind of deck I could run this in as a "win-more-card" without ruining the deck so it fails of my yard gets emptied. It's also worth noting that the tokens gets Destroyed so if you make your creatures indestructible with something like Eldrazi Monument you get to keep your tokens where your opponents have to destroy theirs.

RED • ETB triggers like Purphoros, God of the Forge

• Cool Synnergy with Deathbringer Thoctar which is extra nice since it's also a Zombie

BLACK • Various Deathtriggers like Blood Artist

• Sac outlets

WHITE • Great Synnergy with Cathars' Crusade

• Some Deathtriggers

• Has some nice player protection (To avoiod effects like Bojuka Bog and also nice recursion of enchantments and/or protection for enchantments.

GREEN • Good recursion cards, even on bodies like Eternal Witness to mention one of many.

• Death Presence

BLUE • Draws a lot of cards

• Protects gameplan and has some good Counter Triggered a bility cards like Stifle and Nimble Obstructionist which is extra nice to have on a body that also draws a card.

Basically I've made decks around this a hundred times but when I'm about to finish I feel like I'm lacking something in the colors I'm in or something else, I'm lost in what direction I should go to make the best out of this without having a poop deck till all the stars align.

Best Commanders I can think of as of yet:

Alesha, Who Smiles at Death Aristocrats

Kresh the Bloodbraided works well with this too, currently I'm building him in a more traditional direction since I fell in love with this commander for some reason. :)

Teysa, Orzhov Scion Aristocrat Tokens

Teysa Karlov Aristocrat Deathtriggers

Ghave, Guru of Spores w/o going for inf combo wincon

Grismold, the Dreadsower

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord

Varina, Lich Queen Seems perfect in many ways for this too.

I currently run it in a Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver but I never gotten to cast it yet. The boring thing about Zombie tribal is that it's boring to build and somewhat fun to play (Play zombies, play lords, swing) and it leaves for a less interactive gameplay. It's a solid deck but it doesnt feel very spicy.

I don't necessarly need to run the most optimized deck to have fun or run the most expensive cards. I'm helpful for all the Ideas you can bring me as I seem to have hit a wall where I don't know what to do anymore.

Currently I'm leaning towards either of Teysa's or Alesha.

TL:DR What deck or what colors do you think Tombstone Stairwell would do best in?

Much appreciated. :)

Hmm that's not a bad idea VensersJournalist! Fittingly he's a zombie also, so I could run a zombie theme. :)

I like rakdos with zombies and Tombstone for the absurd combo with Deathbringer Thoctar as well. Originally I ran a list with another reserved list card as commander Lord of Tresserhorn but it resolved more about zombies and having the commander burst out the door unblockable and people just shot me down instantly all the time.

DemonDragonJ on Forcemage Cycle

Some time ago, I expanded Deathgrip and Lifeforce into a cycle of five allied-colored creatures, so I now am doing the same for Freyalise's Charm and Leshrac's Sigil , which are two more cards that I find to be very interesting, so here are the results of my work:

I removed the “return to hand” ability of each card in exchange for much greater versatility; each creature has protection from the shared enemy color of the creature’s colors, as well as an ability that both colors share that triggers when an opponent casts a spell of the enemy color.

Assertive Forcemage Show

Originally, I planned to have this creature’s ability counter the red spell that the opponent cast, but I decided that that was too powerful (and I have already created a white/blue creature than can counter red spells in the previous cycle that I mentioned), so I instead chose another ability that blue and white share.

Ferocious Forcemage Show

The ability of this creature is worded so that it can target either itself, if its controller controls no other creatures, or creatures that are controlled by other players, in the case that an opponent casts a blue spell during another player’s turn, which will make it useful for games with more than two players.

Holistic Forcemage Show

For this card, I wanted to keep the ability of Freyalise's Charm , but drawing cards is not an ability that green and white share, so I instead chose an ability that they do share, and it gains more life than the damage that sadistic forcemage deals because gaining life is usually not as powerful as is losing life.

Mindwrack Forcemage Show

Because this card is much more versatile than is Leshrac's Sigil , I made its ability less powerful, so that the controller of the mage cannot see the other player’s hand, and the other player may choose which card that they discard. Also, given that Balefire Dragon has no relation to Balefire Liege and that Deathbringer Thoctar has no relation to Deathbringer Liege , I feel that I can use the term “mindwrack” on a creature that has no relation to Mindwrack Liege .

Sadistic Forcemage Show

This card is very simple and straightforward, and I originally had planned for it to deal the damage only to the caster of the white spell, but I made the ability more flexible to allow for political ploys in multiplayer games.

Also, I decided to create a legendary card to accompany this cycle, as well:

Felicia, Forcemage Adept Show

I could not allow the ability of Freyalise's Charm to not be used on a creature, so I put it on a legendary creature, so that it could be used as the general of an EDH deck; I gave the player the option of choosing a color, so that the creature would have greater versatility; and I retained the "return to hand" ability, so that the player could choose a different color for the first ability, if they needed to do so.

What does everyone think of these cards? Do you like them?

seshiro_of_the_orochi Thank you for the complement. I am still in the planning stages of the deck. I have yet to go out and buy any of the cards (mostly because I just bought a house). Assault Suit was considered, however I would have to suit up one of my creatures and give it away. If I could suit up an opponents' creature like I can with Bloodthirsty Blade , than it would be an auto include, but sadly Wizards won't let me equip cards to my opponents' creatures. I really considered Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire for the deck as I could use Varragoth to attack open opponents and tutor up with I need or have someone else do search for answers we need, but I feel I would never get to use Varragoth for people would remove Varragoth instantly. Single target removal has been increasing lately and Varragoth is a prime target.

YourNeighborhoodGhost Thank you for the suggestions. I couldn't remember or find the Tempt with Vengeance or Rite of the Raging Storm cards, but I knew they existed. I want to add Massacre Wurm to the deck. Tombstone Stairwell would be a nice gift card, but the cumulative upkeep is turning me off of it. Awaken the Erstwhile would make me discard, and I hate to lose my resources. I could play it when I have no hand or cards I don't need, but that's too situational. I see no point in running Deathbringer Thoctar in this deck. Yes it will get massive fast, and can ping by ditching a counter, but by the time I can actually do massive damage with it, the game should be over by then. Six mana is a lot for a 3/3 body for this deck.
