Commander (EDH) forum

So i'm looking for a very fun and powerful edh deck to put together along with my Norin, the Wary edh deck. There are some restrictions though, I would prefer it to be multicolor, and it cannot be a U/G good stuff deck (reason being is that all the decks in my current play group focus around Prophet of Kruphix, and i hate that card in edh). Let me know on your thoughts of fun and powerful commanders. Thanks!

If you're not completely against U/G, then Kruphix, God of Horizons would be fun depending on the direction you go. I've enjoyed playing my Kruphix, God of Horizons deck. Rather than playing X spells and big things, I play group hug with a janky "combo" finisher. It plays some goodstuff, but some are part of the combos and other cards I like. It's a lot of fun to play with and against, and the combo can easily be stopped. It's a pretty powerful deck and wins often. Just gonna shamelessly leave this here: Give Hugs, Not Drugs.

Another commander I had fun playing with is Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord . It's more of a combo deck, but it's still fun to play.

I mean gu is my favorite combo but I recently did gw and tried it out yesterday and it was fun. Autogamy is the deck if you want to check out the deck list

So I would love to help you find a great deck to use, but I have a couple questions:

Besides multicolor, what color(s) do you like/dislike?

Do you like/dislike aggro, control, combo, and/or midrange?

I have built quite a lot of commander decks (look at my profile if you don't believe me), so I know I can help inspire you :D

Sounds like you need some Gaddock Teeg in your life. He's a really fun commander, that you can go so many ways with. You can go voltron, and give him an armory of swords, or feed more into his control and limiting what everyone can cast, He's versatile and lots of fun. Of course he's also really nice at stopping U/G Good Stuffs, or at least hoding it off. After a few weeks of him, you'll find quite a few people change up their decks.

Play Grand Arbiter Augustin IV just to really irritate everyone. Have no wincons - just stop everyone else from doing what they want.

Gaddok teeg is outrageously hard to pilot. Everyone at the table will want your head on a pije immediately

@NoPantsParade, unfortunately blue and green are out of the question, as the purpose of me building a new deck is to show my playgroup that there are other things to do in edh other than just ramp into stupid fatties. Your deck looks super fun though, and i love the humor you added into describing card choices :D

@MagicalHacker, I don't really have a preference in colors, as long as the deck is fun and powerful, I'll play it! As far as archetypes go, I lean more towards combo/midrange decks. I prefer to not play aggro/voltron, but would play some sort of aggro-control build.

If you want combo or midrange, I find Teysa, Orzhov Scion to be kind of fun. You can build a combo-oriented deck, a simple token deck that works around the exile ability, or combine the both. But since you already have that token deck, I'm kind of out of ideas from my own experience.

As you stated that you like combo decks you could take a crack at Sydri, Galvanic Genius . You can go straight up artifact or go the route I went and mix in some crazy combo shenanigans with

Mine is fairly budget friendly but you could pull out the more pricey stuff and use just a shell as a starting point.

I have also found Oloro, Ageless Ascetic to be fun. He can be control oriented, aggro/lifegain orientated. Unfortunately I don't have my deck list for him on T/O but I basically went the "life is a resource" route and just use it anyway I can.

Hope this helps you. Good luck.

Play Jeskai with a ton of Land Destruction, Wrath, and Mana rocks to keep yourself afloat. Numot, the Devastator is rather fun if you have no guilt or remorse.

September 14, 2014 9:16 p.m.

Uril, the Miststalker for maximum commander damage.

Xenagos, God of Revels with huge trample monsters.

Scion the Ur dragon if you want to play 5-color.

Honestly, if you gave us a more specific idea of the style of deck you might be interested in, it would be a lot easier to suggest a commander we would be confident you would want to play. I pretty much just threw out the commanders I like to play that I have a good win percentage with, but we might not have the same play style.

What is it you are looking to accomplish with your next deck?

Sweet! So here are the restrictions I'm going to be using:

  1. Multicolored
  2. Not voltron
  3. Not ramp-into-fatties
  4. If aggro, containing control, combo, or midrange elements as well
  5. Not blue AND not green (cause there are still plenty of options even with that limitation)

With those limitations, these are the commanders and the respective deck I've built for them:

  1. Oloro, Ageless Ascetic (Orzhov): Before you say that I'm starting out the list with a commander that is blue and therefore breaking the fifth rule, let me explain something quickly. I have seen that playing Oloro just allows other players to tuck him (put him on the bottom of your library) or steal him, thereby removing him without giving the option to put him back in the command zone. So Oloro is the strongest when he is not played, something that cannot be said about any other commander out there period. Now, as we know, blue doesn't exactly have the most life gain cards. In fact, in my esper version of this deck, the only other blue card is Drogskol Reaver (although technically Academy Ruins is another card that requires blue, but it's more of just awesome utility). So in order to make the land base more efficient, I've removed blue completely from the deck. This is definitely a gimmicky idea, and not everyone sees Oloro's effect as the free, irremovable card advantage that it is, but if you're looking for fun and powerful, here's something for you. MagicalHacker - Oloro, Ageless Ascetic (Orzhov)

  2. Teysa, Orzhov Scion : While she may seem rather lame at first, don't be fooled by her circular cleavage-window; she's powerful AND fun. With her, you are going to be able to use tokens as sacrifice fodder for shenanigan purposes, but also use them as control built in to here, and even use blanket power buffs to turn them into win cons. On top of that, she also infinite combos with Darkest Hour and a sacrifice outlet like Altar of Dementia or Blasting Station . Basically, sacrifice a token (which is black no matter what), teysa triggers to make a white token, except it's actually black. The only downside is that you won't ever have white creatures to sacrifice to her first ability, but who cares when you have a infinite combo?! MagicalHacker - Teysa, Orzhov Scion

  3. Triad of Fates : If you want a flicker/control deck, and you don't want people to constantly complain about Deadeye Navigator (he's really not that broken, guys), this is definitely for you. You are definitely going to want some untap shenanigans, after all, it take two taps to flicker or exile target creature, but when you do, prepare to have your mind blown. Not to mention that this is the only EDH/Commander deck I can think of off the top of my head where the commander can flicker Ashen Rider , and who DOESNT want to do that, amiright?! MagicalHacker - Triad of Fates

  4. Boris Devilboon : Don't laugh. Even though it might be funny to think about the fact that those demons are minors (oh my), he (she? Whatever) is actually pretty cool. With all the lord effects in the deck, soon Boris is making 5/5 flying tokens, and that's not bad. Those lords are really great for a demon tribal deck, so this is yet another fun deck to consider. MagicalHacker - Boris Devilboon

  5. Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch : So this deck is more than just an aggro deck, with all the unleash and tribute and arcbound shenanigans. Not to mention that proliferate and giving persist are just awesome. Trust me, if you haven't seen the modular creatures, you will like the awesome interactions here. It's not just haste that creatures with counters can get from Exava, but creatures like the old Oona's Blackguard and the new Mer-Ek Nightblade also give some awesome abilities to basically all your creatures. MagicalHacker - Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch

  6. Grenzo, Dungeon Warden : Unfortunately, this deck is still in the process of being built, and it's been like that for a couple of weeks. :( however, I can still tell you what the premise of the deck should be and what could be some possible downsides. For the most part, the deck is going to be infinite mana combo pieces and tutors, with generating infinite mana as the first objective. (Infinite colorless mana is perfectly fine as long as you still have the possibility of producing .) Follow me here cause here's where it gets a little complicated. Dump infinite mana into Grenzo's , activate his ability infinite times, and do this process: Get Triskelavus on the field, make tokens to let it die, get Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre or Kozilek, Butcher of Truth on the field, play Phyrexian Dreadnought , sacrifice it and the Eldrazi you have, then shuffle all the pieces back, and repeat for infinite tokens, and then lastly sacrifice them to deal infinite damage to all players. The nice part is that all those pieces are colorless so it works if you have pieces in your hand and infinite colorless in your mana pool. If that hiccups, you can just use Golem Artisan to give all artifact creatures in your deck +1,000/+1,000 and trample and haste, and it is also colorless. (MagicalHacker - Grenzo, Dungeon's Warden coming soon hopefully!)

  7. Lyzolda, the Blood Witch : In the same way that Teysa uses tokens for either sacrifice shenanigans or a win con, that's exactly what Lyzolda does. While there isn't a built-in infinite combo, you get to draw cards and Shock , which is nice in terms of versatility. That's not to say that there aren't any infinite combos; to the contrary! Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + persist like Lingering Tormentor + a sac outlet like Altar of Dementia is a nice way to win. MagicalHacker - Lyzolda, the Blood Witch

  8. Olivia Voldaren : If the idea of being able to make buttloads of mana and steal creatures without paying blue tickles your fancy, or you think ": Destroy target creature," is broken as hell, Olivia might be the gal for you. Give her lifelink and deathtouch and wither/infect and you're golden. Sword of Kaldra is cute too. MagicalHacker - Olivia Voldaren

  9. Rakdos, Lord of Riots : Once you get some damage in, like via Tormented Soul , you can cast Rakdos, and after that point, you basically can start casting artifact creatures and Eldrazi for free or for very cheap. Imagine a free Wurmcoil Engine or a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth for . I don't know if it fits into the whole ramp-into-fatties for it to be disqualified, so I thought I'd include it just in case. MagicalHacker - Rakdos, Lord of Riots

  10. Tor Wauki : While Olivia is similar, this has the added advantage of rattlesnaking players into not entering creatures into combat. Untap cards are also really great, which don't really do anything with Olivia, but here it's absolutely amazing since you can keep casting thing while still dealing damage without needing to use mana for it. Also, forcing attacks/blocks can be a nice sub theme. MagicalHacker - Tor Wauki

  11. Wort, Boggart Auntie : Now while most would say that this is best for goblin tribal, that's only part of the equation. What you also need is goblin ETBs and flicker shenanigans and sacrifice shenanigans. It's actually kind of beautiful in an ugly kind of way. That probably doesn't make any sense. Oh well. It's good too. MagicalHacker - Wort, Boggart Auntie

  12. Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran : This might seem silly, but this guy doesn't care about white creatures. Big butts don't win games (except Doran). So, basically, just make a LOT of red creature tokens. And swing. And win. It's not the most genius idea, but it works. MagicalHacker - Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran

  13. Anax and Cymede : Yet another tokens deck, this time themed around getting their heroic to trigger WHILE drawing cards to feed the heroic even more. It's rather nice having a large trampling token army without losing card advantage. MagicalHacker - Anax and Cymede

  14. Basandra, Battle Seraph : Want a deck that makes your opponents attack and they can't do anything about it? Basandra says hi. It's nice because tokens are good chump blockers and also good win cons once you get in a great position, and she stops people from casting that annoying AEtherspouts too. Definitely an under played commander but definitely more powerful than people think. MagicalHacker - Basandra, Battle Seraph

  15. Brion Stoutarm : So yeah, since it's not just good enough to fling your own creatures, steal creatures, AND THEN fling creatures. And gain life on top of that. It's pretty awesome actually. MagicalHacker - Brion Stoutarm

  16. Iroas, God of Victory : Another token deck, but at least this time, those tokens basically don't die in combat, and they are extremely hard to block when you can't block one-for-one and blocking can't even kill them. So combine the commander with tokens and blanket effects like anthems and Akroma's Memorial , and the fact that your commander stays an indestructible creature is gonna really get on people's nerves. Especially when you keep winning. MagicalHacker - Iroas, God of Victory

  17. Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer : Okay, so I know I've mentioned a lot of token decks, but having your commander give your creatures +3/+0 for the small price of activating metalcraft is hella broken. Think about that. Having a Myr Battlesphere is 23 power on the battlefield NOT INCLUDING THE COMMANDER. FOR SEVEN MANA. AS FIVE CREATURES. WHAT THE HECK. MagicalHacker - Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer

  18. Kaalia of the Vast : Click the link. Read the creatures. Thank me later. MagicalHacker - Kaalia of the Vast (Basically, free angels and demons and dragons, including the awesome combos of Master of Cruelties or Rakdos the Defiler .)

  19. Zurgo Helmsmasher : If you ever wanted a deck that was built around board wipes but not around voltron, here you go! Normally a creature that's just plain indestructible is perfect for a voltron strategy, but since Zurgo isn't indestructible all the time, popping auras on him is really risky. But being able to destroy all permanents on the battlefield (like with Worldslayer ) is super cheap when you have a three-turn clock commander that can't be destroyed. I'm just excited to see a board wipe commander finally, but I'm also excited to watch people do so much board wipes all the time. MagicalHacker - Zurgo Helmsmasher

Happy deck building!

I run Kaalia of the Vast and I've beaten the Prophet of Kruphix blink deck many times over with it. I really enjoy aggro and beatdown though and that may not be your thing but I'll throw it out there anyway.

(Shameless deck plug: Say Hello To My "Little" Friends)

Other good decks I've played against include Rafiq of the Many voltron, Oloro, Ageless Ascetic control, and Nekusar, the Mindrazer cruel control.

I've also seen some interesting Damia, Sage of Stone decks for control/combo if that's what you're into.

Oops sorry didn't see you don't play voltron
